It is said that… / He is said to…

It is said that… / She is said to…

  • It is said/believed/reported/thought + that절: 비인칭 구조로, “-다고 해요”와 비슷해요
  • 주어 + is said/believed/reported/thought + to부정사: 인칭 구조로, 사람이나 사물을 주어로 내세워요
  • 과거의 일은 to have + 과거분사로 말해요(is said to have left).

아래 두 문장은 모두 “그 회사가 어려움을 겪고 있다고 해요”라는 뜻이에요: “It is said that the company is struggling.” “The company is said to be struggling.”

"It is said that the company is struggling."
"The company is said to be struggling."

It is said/believed/reported that…

이 구조는 학교에서 “It is said that ~ = ~라고 한다”로 배운 바로 그 형태예요: it + 수동태 동사 + that이 이끄는 완전한 절. “It is reported that the road will be closed tomorrow.”(내일 그 도로가 통제된다고 해요.) “It is thought that prices will rise next year.”(내년에 물가가 오를 것으로 보여요.)

항상 It으로 시작하세요: “It is said that…”이지 “Is said that…”

편한 영어에서는 that을 생략하기도 하고(“It's said the restaurant is excellent”), 격식 있는 글에서는 보통 써요. 자주 쓰는 동사는 say, believe, think, report, know, expect, understand, consider, allege예요.

"It is reported that the road will be closed tomorrow."
"It is thought that prices will rise next year."

인칭 구조: 주어 + is said/believed to…

“It is believed that she is one of the best”가 “She is believed to be one of the best”가 되는 식이에요.

“She is believed to be one of the best in her field.” “The team is expected to win the championship.”

이걸 그대로 옮기면 “She is believed that she is talented”처럼 두 구조가 섞인 문장이 돼요.

"She is believed to be one of the best in her field."
"The team is expected to win the championship."

“그 사람은 출국한 것으로 보여요” → “He is thought to have left the country.” “용의자는 차를 타고 달아난 것으로 알려졌어요” → “The suspect is believed to have fled by car.”

단순 부정사(to leave, to flee)는 현재나 미래를 가리켜요. “He is thought to leave the country”라고 하면 아직 떠나지 않은 것처럼 들려요. 수동의 내용이라면 to have been + 과거분사예요: “The painting is believed to have been stolen.”(그 그림은 도난당한 것으로 추정돼요.) “is seen to have fled”가 아니라 is believed, is thought를 써요.

"He is thought to have left the country."
"The suspect is believed to have fled by car."

"It is known that the region has a rich history."
"The bridge is said to be over 200 years old."
"The painting is believed to have been stolen decades ago."
"It is expected that turnout will be high."

✗Is said that the company is struggling.
✓It is said that the company is struggling.

It is said that…

✗The suspect is seen to have fled by car.
✓The suspect is believed to have fled by car.

추정을 전할 때는 is believed / is thought + to have + 과거분사를 써요.

✗She is believed that she is very talented.
✓She is believed to be very talented.

✗He is thought to leave the country.
✓He is thought to have left the country.

✗It is said the company is struggling that.
✓It is said that the company is struggling.

✗The company is said be struggling.
✓The company is said to be struggling.

인칭 구조에서는 is said 뒤에 반드시 to부정사가 와요. to를 빼먹지 마세요.

“그 식당이 정말 맛있다고 해요” → “It is said that the restaurant is excellent.” “Is said that the restaurant is excellent.”

영어의 that은 반대로 인용 내용의 맨 앞, 수동태 동사 바로 뒤에 와요: “It is said that the company is struggling.” 한국어 어순대로 that을 끝으로 보내면(“It is said the company is struggling that.”)

“It is believed that she is talented.” 또는 “She is believed to be talented.” 둘을 섞은 “She is believed that she is talented.”

뉴스에서 새로 전해진 정보라면 is reported, is said가 더 정확해요. “보인다”도 see가 아니라 is believed, is thought예요: “The suspect is believed to have fled by car.” It is known that은 “The region has a rich history”처럼 널리 인정된 사실에 써요.

💡 “-다고 해요” → It is said that…(It을 잊지 마세요).

💡 “-한 것으로 알려졌어요/보여요” → is said / is believed + to have + 과거분사.

💡 It is said that + 절, 또는 주어 + is said to + 동사원형.

"Did you hear the rumors about the new manager?"

"Yeah, she's said to be really strict."

"Really? It's also reported that she completely reorganized her last team."

"Guess we'll find out soon enough."
