住んでいるのは flat(イギリス英語)または apartment(アメリカ英語)で、乗るのは lift(イギリス英語)または elevator(アメリカ英語)です。 道路では、lorry(イギリス英語)が truck(アメリカ英語)で、歩道は pavement(イギリス英語)または sidewalk(アメリカ英語)です。

英語の mansion は「大邸宅・豪邸」のことで、“I live in a mansion.” ふつうの集合住宅なら apartment(アメリカ英語)または flat(イギリス英語)です。

「ガソリンスタンド」は和製英語で、petrol station(イギリス英語)または gas station(アメリカ英語)と言います。

I live in a flat and take the lift to the third floor. I live in an apartment and take the elevator to the third floor."
A lorry was blocking the pavement. A truck was blocking the sidewalk."

Would you like a biscuit with your tea? Would you like a cookie with your tea?"
We're going on holiday in the autumn. We're going on vacation in the fall."

また、どちらの単語も複数形で使います:new pants、new trousers、a pair of trousers。

I bought new pants for the interview.(ズボン)"
I bought new pants for the interview.(下着:たぶん言いたかったことではありません!)"

注意

✗I love your pants! (said to a British speaker, meaning 'trousers')
✓I love your trousers! (safe in both varieties) — or 'pants' only if you mean American trousers with an American audience.

✗Everyone calls it an 'elevator' — 'lift' isn't real English.
✓Both are real, standard English — 'elevator' is American, 'lift' is British.

✗I live in a mansion near the station.
✓I live in an apartment near the station.

日本の「マンション」は apartment(アメリカ英語)または flat(イギリス英語)と言います。

✗Can I have a fried potato, please?
✓Can I have some fries, please?

✗Is there a gasoline stand near here?
✓Is there a gas station near here?

✗I bought a new pant.
✓I bought new pants.

数えるときは a pair of pants、two pairs of trousers です。

「マンション」は apartment(アメリカ英語)/ flat(イギリス英語)で、mansion は豪邸です。「フライドポテト」は fries(アメリカ英語)/ chips(イギリス英語)。「ガソリンスタンド」は gas station(アメリカ英語)/ petrol station(イギリス英語)。「ケータイ」は cell phone(アメリカ英語)/ mobile(イギリス英語)、どちらでも phone で通じます。

💡 「ポテトチップス」= crisps(イギリス英語)/ chips(アメリカ英語)。「フライドポテト」= chips(イギリス英語)/ fries(アメリカ英語)。

"I told my British coworker I loved her pants, and she looked so confused!"

"Oh no — in British English that means underwear! You probably meant her trousers."

"I had no idea that word could mean two totally different things."

"It's the one everyone warns you about — most other differences are just synonyms, but that one can genuinely embarrass you."
