It is said that... / He is said to...

It is said that... / She is said to...

  • It is said/believed/reported/thought + that節:形式主語 it を使う言い方(「〜と言われている」)
  • 主語 + is said/believed/reported/thought + to不定詞:人や物を主語にする言い方
  • 過去の出来事には完了不定詞(to have + 過去分詞)を使う:is said to have left

次の2つの文は、どちらも「その会社は経営が苦しいと言われている」という意味です:“It is said that the company is struggling.” “The company is said to be struggling.” to be struggling

"It is said that the company is struggling."
"The company is said to be struggling."

It is said/believed/reported that...

it + 受動態の動詞 + that で始まる完全な文、という形になります:“It is reported that the road will be closed tomorrow.”(明日その道路は通行止めになると報じられている)、“It is thought that prices will rise next year.”(来年は物価が上がると考えられている)。

“It is said the company is struggling that.”

くだけた英語では that を省略することもあります(“It's said the restaurant is excellent”)が、改まった文章ではふつう残します。よく使う動詞は say、believe、think、report、know、expect、understand、consider、allege です。

"It is reported that the road will be closed tomorrow."
"It is thought that prices will rise next year."

Subject + is said/believed to...

“It is believed that she is one of the best” は “She is believed to be one of the best” になります。

ただし、日本語の「〜だと」をそのまま英語にして “She is believed that she is…” 正しくは “She is believed to be one of the best in her field.” です。「そのチームは優勝すると予想されている」→ “The team is expected to win the championship.” to を落として “is expected win” にもしません。

consider を使うときは “She is considered (to be) one of the best” で、「〜として」につられて as は入れません。

"She is believed to be one of the best in her field."
"The team is expected to win the championship."

英語では、その過去の部分を to have left で表します:“He is thought to have left the country.” 「容疑者は車で逃走したとみられている」→ “The suspect is believed to have fled by car.”

ふつうの不定詞(to leave、to flee)は現在や未来を表すので、“He is thought to leave the country” と言うと、まだ出国していないように聞こえます。ニュースの「〜とみられている」は、see ではなく believe や think で表します(“is seen to have fled” とはふつう言いません)。受け身の内容なら to have been + 過去分詞です:“The painting is believed to have been stolen”(その絵は盗まれたと考えられている)。

"He is thought to have left the country."
"The suspect is believed to have fled by car."

"It is known that the region has a rich history."
"The bridge is said to be over 200 years old."
"The painting is believed to have been stolen decades ago."
"It is expected that turnout will be high."

注意

✗It is said the company is struggling that.
✓It is said that the company is struggling.

✗She is believed that she is very talented.
✓She is believed to be very talented.

✗He is thought to leave the country.
✓He is thought to have left the country.

✗The company is said be struggling.
✓The company is said to be struggling.

is said の後は to不定詞です。

✗The painting is believed to be stolen decades ago.
✓The painting is believed to have been stolen decades ago.

to have been + 過去分詞にします。

英語の “It is said that…” “It is believed that…” ただし語順が逆で、日本語の「と」は内容の後ろ、英語の that は内容の前です:“It is said that the restaurant is excellent.” that を文の最後に置かないようにしましょう。

it で始めるなら that節:“It is believed that she is very talented.” 人を主語にするなら to不定詞:“She is believed to be very talented.” “She is believed that she is talented.”

人を主語にする形では、その過去を完了不定詞で表します:“He is thought to have left the country.”、“The painting is believed to have been stolen decades ago.”

💡 「〜と言われている」→ It is said that…。

💡 「〜したとみられている」のように過去の出来事なら is believed / is said to have + 過去分詞です。

"Did you hear the rumors about the new manager?"

"Yeah, she's said to be really strict."

"Really? It's also reported that she completely reorganized her last team."

"Guess we'll find out soon enough."
