need、needn't、don't need to

  • needn't + 動詞の原形:助動詞としての need(to も do/does も使わない)
  • needn't と don't need to は「〜しなくてもいい」。mustn't(〜してはいけない)とは違う

ほとんどの英語の動詞は使い方が1通りですが、need は助動詞(needn't:to なし、do なし)としても、ふつうの動詞(don't need to:to あり、do/does を使う)としても使えます。

“You needn't to worry” は間違いで、“You needn't worry.” 反対に、ふつうの動詞として使うときは to が必要です:“You don't need to worry.”(“You don't need worry.”

アメリカ英語や日常会話では don't need to(または don't have to)のほうがずっとよく使われます。また、助動詞の need はほぼ否定文と疑問文だけで使い、“You need worry” とは言いません(“You need to worry” です)。助動詞の疑問文では need を主語の前に出し、do も to も使いません:“Need I explain further?”(かための言い方。ふだんは “Do I need to explain…?”)。

"You needn't worry about it."
"You don't need to worry about it."

needn't と don't need to は同じ意味

“You don't need to worry.” のほか、くだけた “No need to worry.”

ふつうの動詞として使うときは、he/she/it に doesn't を使います:“He doesn't need to sign anything yet.”(“He don't need to” は×)。助動詞の needn't には -s がつかず、後ろの動詞も原形のままです:“She needn't come to the meeting if she's busy.”(“she needn't comes” は×)。

"needn't worry / don't need to worry (どちらも「〜しなくてもいい」)"
"She needn't come to the meeting if she's busy."

needn't have + 過去分詞

は “You needn't have brought a gift — but thank you!” です。決まり文句の “Oh, you needn't have!” もよく使います(“You shouldn't have!”

"You needn't have brought a gift — but thank you!"
"You needn't have worried — everything worked out fine."

"Need I explain further?"
"He doesn't need to sign anything yet."
"Need we discuss this now?"
"She doesn't need to change her flight."

注意

✗You needn't to worry about it.
✓You needn't worry about it.

✗You don't need worry about it.
✓You don't need to worry about it.

✗needn't worry / mustn't worry (同じ意味だと考える)
✓needn't worry / don't need to worry

✗You mustn't bring anything — we have enough food.
✓You don't need to bring anything — we have enough food.

✗He don't need to sign anything yet.
✓He doesn't need to sign anything yet.

ふつうの動詞の need は、he/she/it の否定で doesn't を使います。

✗You needn't brought a gift — but thank you!
✓You needn't have brought a gift — but thank you!

“You mustn't bring anything.” 「何も持ってこなくていいよ」は “You don't need to bring anything.”

ふつうの動詞として使うときは、その通り to が必要です:“You don't need to wait.”。でも助動詞の needn't には to をつけません:“You needn't wait.”。“You don't need wait” と “You needn't to wait” は、どちらも2つの形が混ざった間違いです。

英語では needn't have + 過去分詞を使います:“You needn't have brought anything.”。 “You needn't brought…”

💡 「〜しなくてもいい」「〜する必要はない」= needn't / don't need to。

💡 needn't:to なし、-s なし。don't/doesn't need:to あり。

You don't need to worry / You needn't worry / No need to worry.

"I brought some flowers, I hope that's okay."

"Oh, you needn't have! But thank you, they're lovely."

"Do I need to take my shoes off?"

"No, you don't need to — make yourself at home."
