何も指さない主語 it(Dummy It)

It's raining. It's five o'clock. It's ten miles away. It's hard to say.

  • 天気(“It's raining”)や時刻(“It's five o'clock”)の文では、何も指さない it を主語に置く
  • 距離にも it を使う(“It's ten miles away”)
  • it は、文の後ろで説明される意見や事実を先に示すこともできる(“It's important to arrive early”。
  • この dummy it は、何かが「ある・いる」と言う there is/are(「〜がある」)とは別物。詳しくは「There is / there are」のレッスンで

英語では、言うべき主語がないときこそ it を置きます:“It's raining”、“It's late”。

"It's raining."
"It's five o'clock."

曜日や日付にも使います:“It's Monday.”(“Today is Monday.”

now は主語にせず、“It's five o'clock (now).” 天気なら “It's cold”、自分が寒いと感じるなら “I'm cold” です。

「海岸まで500キロです」は “It's 500 kilometers to the coast.” となり、“To the coast is 500 kilometers” とは言いません。移動にかかる時間(「街の中心まで1時間くらいかかります」)は take を使って “It takes about an hour to get downtown” と言います。

"It's snowing again."
"It's nearly midnight."
"It's about two miles to the station."

意見や事実を先に示す it(形式主語)

難しさ・簡単さを言う文もこの形です:“It's hard to say.”(何とも言えない)、“It's easy to forget.”

“To arrive early is important.” 「〜らしい」「〜ようだ」も it で始めます:“It seems that she already left.” 「これは大切です」の感覚で “This is important to arrive early” としないように注意しましょう。

"It's important to arrive early."
"It seems that she already left."
"It's strange that he didn't call."

"It's freezing outside — grab a coat."
"It's only a ten-minute walk from here."
"It's worth checking twice before you send it."
"It looks like it might rain later."

注意

✗Is raining outside.
✓It's raining outside.

✗Cold today.
✓It's cold today.

It's cold today.

✗It's a problem with the printer.
✓There's a problem with the printer.

✗Now is five o'clock.
✓It's five o'clock now.

✗She seems already left.
✓It seems that she already left.

「〜らしい」「〜ようだ」は It seems that… (She seems to have left.

✗It needs about an hour to get downtown.
✓It takes about an hour to get downtown.

「1時間かかる」は It takes an hour です。

✗This is important to arrive early.
✓It's important to arrive early.

指すものがないときは it で主語の位置を埋めます:“It's raining.”、“It's cold, isn't it?”、“Is it far?”。

主語は it にして、話題は後ろに回します:“It's five o'clock now.”、“It's about two miles to the station.”。“Now is five o'clock.”

存在を言うときは it ではなく there is / there are を使います:“There's a problem with the printer.”、“There's a spider on the wall!” “It's a problem with the printer.” “It has a spider” のように have を使うのも間違いです。

英語では it を主語にして take を使います:“It takes about an hour to get downtown.” “It needs an hour” や “It spends an hour” とは言いません。spend は「人が時間を使う」とき(“I spent an hour on it.”)、last は出来事の長さ(“The movie lasts two hours.”)

💡 「今は5時です」→ It's five o'clock now。

💡 「〜がある・いる」は there is / there are。

💡 「寒い」は天気なら It's cold、自分の感覚なら I'm cold。

"How far is it to the airport?"

"It's about forty minutes by car, so it's probably best to leave by six."

"It's supposed to rain in the morning too."

"Then it's a good thing we're not walking."
