Although it was raining, we went out. Despite the rain, we went out. It was raining. Nevertheless, we went out.

  • although、even though、though
  • despite と in spite of は、名詞か -ing 形の前に置きます。

“Although it was raining, but we went out.”

"Although it was raining, we went out."
"Despite the rain, we went out."

although / even though / though +節

節を先に置くときはコンマで区切ります:“Although it was raining, we went out.” / “We went out although it was raining.”

実際の事実には even though(“Even though he was tired, he kept working.”)、仮定や条件には even if(“even if it rains tomorrow”)を使います。

"Although it was raining, we went out."
"Even though he was tired, he kept working."
"It was a great trip. Expensive, though."

despite / in spite of +名詞または -ing 形

“Despite it was raining” は間違いです。また、despite は of なしで使います(despite the rain)。of がつくのは in spite of だけで、“despite of” とは言いません。

動詞を続けたいときは -ing 形にします:「経験がなかったにもかかわらず、その仕事に就いた」→ “Despite having no experience, she got the job.” “despite have” や “despite to have” とは言いません。

どうしても主語と動詞のある節を続けたいなら、although を使うか、despite the fact that を使います:“Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out.”

“We went out anyway.” や “We still went out.”

"Despite the rain, we went out."
"In spite of losing the match, the team stayed positive."

“The plan was risky; however, it worked.” か、コンマで済ませたいなら but を使いましょう:“The plan was risky, but it worked.”

"The film was long. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it."
"The plan was risky; however, it worked."

"Though it was late, she decided to call."
"Despite having no experience, she got the job."
"The hike was exhausting. Nevertheless, the view was worth it."
"He's quiet, but his brother is very outgoing."

注意

✗Although it was raining, but we went out.
✓Although it was raining, we went out.

✗Despite it was raining, we went out.
✓Despite the rain, we went out.

✗Despite of the rain, we went out.
✓Despite the rain, we went out.

in spite of と混ざった形です。

✗The film was long, nevertheless we enjoyed it.
✓The film was long. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it.

✗She got the job despite to have no experience.
✓She got the job despite having no experience.

✗It was raining, but we went out despite.
✓It was raining, but we went out anyway.

although を使ったら but は入れません:“Although it was raining, we went out.” but を使うなら although は不要です:“It was raining, but we went out.” “Although …, but …”

英語の despite / in spite of の後ろは、名詞か -ing 形だけです:“Despite the rain…”、“Despite losing the match…”。節を続けるなら although か despite the fact that を使います。“Despite it was raining” や “Despite of the rain” は間違いです。

however / nevertheless も同じ使い方です:“The plan was risky. However, it worked.”

英語では、事実なら even though、仮定なら even if と使い分けます。このレッスンで扱うのは事実なので、even though(または although)を使います:“Even though he was tired, he kept working.”

節なら although か despite the fact that。

💡 however / nevertheless は「。

"You still bought the tickets, even though they were so expensive?"

"Yeah — despite the price, I really wanted to go."

"Fair enough. It's risky, but I hope it's worth it."

"It will be. The concert was sold out. Nevertheless, I managed to get seats."
