(Linking Words)

It was raining. However, we went for a walk. linking words は、and や but のように1つの文の中をつなぐのではなく、2つの文の内容をつなぐ言葉です。

  • linking words(however、therefore、moreover、furthermore、nevertheless、for example、on the other hand

英語の however もこれと同じで、“It was cold. However, we went out anyway.”

"It was raining. However, we went for a walk."
"The plan failed; therefore, we need a new one."

however(しかし)、nevertheless(それでも、にもかかわらず)、on the other hand(その一方で、他方では)は対比を表します。therefore、as a result、consequently(そのため、その結果)は結果を表します。for example(例えば)は例を挙げます。

前の文の中に入れるか(“…, for example sushi and tempura.”)、主語と動詞のある文にします(“For example, buses run every five minutes.”)。

on the other hand は on で始まる決まった表現です(“in the other hand” ではありません)。 や “Also, …”

"The hotel was affordable. Moreover, it was close to the beach."
"The hotel was expensive. On the other hand, it was very comfortable."

や “It was raining, therefore we stayed at home.” コンマ1つでつなぎたいなら、接続詞の but や so を使いましょう:“It was cold, but we went out anyway.”

セミコロンは「ピリオドほど切らずに、2つの文を密接につなぐ記号」と考えましょう:“The plan failed; therefore, we need a new one.” なお、however は文の途中にコンマではさんで置くこともできます:“We, however, went out anyway.”

"It was cold, but we went out anyway.
"It was cold. However, we went out anyway.

"The traffic was terrible. As a result, we missed the first act."
"She's talented; furthermore, she works incredibly hard."
"The city has excellent public transport. For example, buses run every five minutes."
"He was exhausted. Nevertheless, he finished the race."

注意

✗It was raining, however we went for a walk.
✓It was raining. However, we went for a walk.

✗It was raining. However we went for a walk.
✓It was raining. However, we went for a walk.

特に however は、コンマがないと「どんなに〜でも」(However hard I try…)

✗The plan failed therefore we need a new one.
✓The plan failed; therefore, we need a new one.

✗It was raining, therefore we stayed at home.
✓It was raining, so we stayed at home.

✗It was cold. But, we went out anyway.
✓It was cold, but we went out anyway.

✗The hotel was expensive. In the other hand, it was very comfortable.
✓The hotel was expensive. On the other hand, it was very comfortable.

「その一方で」は on the other hand。

however、moreover、therefore、for example も同じように、ピリオドのあとの文頭に置き、すぐあとにコンマを付けます:“It was raining. However, we went for a walk.”

コンマだけでつなぎたいなら、「〜が」は but、「〜から」は so を使いましょう:“The plan failed, so we need a new one.”

英語では “The plan failed; therefore, we need a new one.” Therefore, we need a new one.”

💡 見分け方:その語を2つ目の文の途中に動かせる(“We, however, went out”)なら linking word。 but、and、so はいつも節の頭に置きます。

💡 but =「〜が」(コンマで1つの文に)、however =「しかし」(前にピリオドかセミコロン、あとにコンマ)。

"So what did you think of the apartment?"

"It's small. However, it's in a great location."

"That matters a lot. Plus, it's affordable. Moreover, the landlord seems reasonable."

"Sounds like a solid option overall."
