(Advanced Article Usage)

  • 最上級、序数(first、last)、only、same には the がつく
語順は such a で、“a such” や “so nice surprise” ではない

pleasure、shame、pity、relief は “it was a pleasure” のような決まった表現では a が必ず必要です。

"She has a good knowledge of French." a のない “good knowledge of French” も正しい英語です。

"It was a pleasure to meet you."

“It's a pity.” と a が必要で、“It's shame” とは言いません。“It was a shame you couldn't come.”(来られなくて残念だった)のように使います。 も “What a shame!” / “What a pity!” です。

"She has a good knowledge of French."
"It was a pleasure to meet you."

最上級・序数・only・same には the

最上級(best、most important)、序数(first、last)、そして only や same には the がつきます。

"This is the best restaurant in town."

"That was the only mistake he made all year." — only(唯一の)です。「同じ時間に」も “at the same time” で、the が必要です。

「寿司を食べるのはこれが初めてです」は “This is the first time I've ever tried sushi.” the first time のあとは、現在形ではなく現在完了形(I've ever tried)を使います。また、「先週」「来年」は the をつけずに last week、next year と言います。the last は「(一連のものの)最後の」という意味です:the last chance、the last week of June。

決まった表現の例外もいくつかあり、意味が変わります:an only child(一人っ子)、a second chance(再挑戦の機会)、a most interesting talk(とても興味深い講演)。

"This is the best restaurant in town."
"That was the only mistake he made all year."

感嘆文の such a と what a

"What a beautiful sunset it was!" の形(How +形容詞)と混ぜて “How beautiful sunset!” “What a mess!”(なんて散らかっているんだ!)、“What a relief!”(ああ、ほっとした!)

"What nice weather we're having!" 同じように、news や advice も不可算名詞です:“What good news!”、“such good advice”。“a good news” や “advices” とは言いません。

“a such surprise” や “a so nice surprise” とは言わず、a を落とした “such nice surprise” も間違いです。

"What a beautiful sunset it was!"
"What nice weather we're having!"

"He has a real talent for storytelling."
"This is the most important decision of my life."
"What a mess this kitchen is!"
"It was such a relief to finally finish the project."

注意

✗What beautiful sunset!
✓What a beautiful sunset!

✗It's shame you couldn't come.
✓It's a shame you couldn't come.

It's a shame、It's a pity。

✗We're having a nice weather today.
✓We're having nice weather today.

“It's a nice day today.”

✗What a good news!
✓What good news!

✗It was pleasure to meet you.
✓It was a pleasure to meet you.

it was a pleasure、it's a shame、what a relief などの決まった表現では、抽象名詞に a が必要です。

✗This is best restaurant in town.
✓This is the best restaurant in town.

✗It was such nice surprise.
✓It was such a nice surprise.

✗She has good knowledges of French.
✓She has a good knowledge of French.

a good knowledge of または good knowledge of と言います。

英語では、名詞が単数の可算名詞なら a が必要です:“What a beautiful sunset!”、“What a pity!”、“What a mess!”。a がつかないのは、不可算名詞や複数形のときだけです:“What nice weather!”、“What beautiful flowers!”。 「残念です」も同じで、“It's a shame.” / “It's a pity.”

英語では news、advice、information、knowledge、weather は不可算名詞で、a も複数形の -s もつきません:“What good news!”、“such good advice”、“What nice weather!”。knowledge は、形容詞がついて「程度」を表すときに “a good knowledge of French” となりますが、“knowledges” にはなりません。“a nice weather”、“a good news”、“advices” は日本語話者によくある間違いです。

英語で単数の可算名詞を強めるときは、such a +形容詞+名詞の語順にします:“such a nice surprise”、“such an interesting book”。“so nice surprise”、“such nice surprise”、“a such surprise” は間違いです。so を使うなら “The surprise was so nice.”

英語では、これらの言葉といっしょに the を使います:“the best restaurant”、“the first time”、“the last chance”、“the only mistake”、“at the same time”。

💡 感嘆文で、名詞が単数の可算名詞なら what a:What a sunset! What a pity!

💡 「残念です」→ It's a shame / It's a pity。

What nice weather! What good news!

ただし「先週」は last week で the なし。

"How did it go? It was a pleasure just to meet the team, honestly."

"That's great! Did they ask anything tricky?"

"Just one — the hardest question was about a project I led two years ago."

"What a relief — sounds like it went really well!"
