(Generic vs Specific Reference)

(Tigers are…)
(Life, Water, Information)

Life is short. Water is essential. I like books.

Water is essential for life. information, nature, life, time などは、一般的に言うとき the を付けません。

"Tigers are the largest cats in the world." “Tiger is the largest cat” のように単数形を裸で使うことはできず、“The tigers are…”

"The telephone changed the way people communicate forever." 「人間は社会的な動物だ」は “Humans are social animals” で、“Human is…” や “The human is…”

"Tigers are the largest cats in the world."
"The telephone changed the way people communicate forever."

"The tigers at the zoo were sleeping when we visited." —

"Could you hand me the phone? It's right next to you."

"The tigers at the zoo were sleeping when we visited."
"Could you hand me the phone? It's right next to you."

"I found a phone on the bus — does it belong to you?"

"A dog needs daily exercise." —

"I found a phone on the bus — does it belong to you?"
"A dog needs daily exercise."

"Elephants have excellent memories."
"The computer has transformed the modern workplace."
"I adopted a cat last month — she's adjusting well."
"The cats at the shelter are looking for homes."

注意

✗Dog is loyal animal.
✓Dogs are loyal animals.

✗I like dog.
✓I like dogs.

✗The elephants are intelligent animals.
✓Elephants are intelligent animals.

✗Informations are very useful for beginners.
✓Information is very useful for beginners.

✗The human is a social animal.
✓Humans are social animals.

✗I found phone on the bus.
✓I found a phone on the bus.

✗Dogs next door bark all night.
✓The dogs next door bark all night.

✗Telephone was invented in the 19th century.
✓The telephone was invented in the 19th century.

“Elephants are intelligent animals.” “Dog is loyal animal” や “I like dog” は間違いで、特に “I like dog” は「犬の肉が好き」のように聞こえることがあります。

一般論は “Dogs are loyal”、特定のグループは “The dogs next door bark all night” です。the を「は」の代わりのように付けて “The dogs are loyal animals” や “The books are a great way to learn new things” とすると、特定の犬や本の話になってしまいます。

“Water is essential for life.” “Life is short.” the を付けるのは “the information you sent me” のように特定のものだけです。

人間について一般的に言うときは複数形で “Humans are social animals”(“Human is…” や “The human is…” 一方、発明品・動物の種・体の器官を1つの種類として言うときは the+単数形が使えます:“The telephone changed…”、“The human brain is…”。ここで the を落として “Telephone was invented…”

Elephants are…, I like dogs.

Life is…, Water is…, Information is…

"Dogs are so loyal — I really want one."

"I know! Actually, I just adopted a dog last week."

"No way, congrats! Is he friendly with other dogs?"

"Very — the staff at the shelter said he gets along with everyone."
