Bu kelimeler bir miktarı daha net anlatır: “çoğu” için most, “birkaç” için several, “bol bol” için plenty of, “birçok” için a number of. Her birinin küçük bir kuralı var.
Neler öğreneceksin
Some, any, much ve many dışında İngilizcede miktarı daha net anlatan başka sık kullanılan kelimeler de var: most, several, plenty of ve a number of. Her birinin küçük bir dil bilgisi kuralı var ve İngilizce tam bu noktalarda Türkçeden ayrılıyor: the ve of kullanımında, ismin tekil mi çoğul mu olduğunda ve fiilin biçiminde.
İnsanlar ya da şeyler hakkında genel bir şey söylerken most kelimesini doğrudan ismin önüne koy, the ve of olmadan. Türkçedeki “çoğu insan” yapısı bunun tam karşılığıdır: most people. “Most of people” ya da “the most people” yanlıştır. (The most de vardır, ama üstünlük anlamında: “Who has the most money?” – “En çok parası olan kim?”)
Most of yapısını belirli, sınırları çizilmiş bir grup için kullan: the, this/these, my/your… ya da us, them gibi bir zamirden önce. Burada Türkçedeki “-in çoğu” yapısına benzer: “sınıfımdaki öğrencilerin çoğu” → most of the students in my class, “çoğumuz” → most of us.
Bu yapıyı kelimesi kelimesine çevirince “most of people” çıkıyor. Genel bir ifadede İngilizce ne the ne de of kullanır: most people, most children.
“Most people prefer tea to coffee.” – genel bir ifade: the yok, of yok.
“Most of the students in my class speak two languages.”
Yalnızca sayılabilen isimlerle ve doğrudan ismin önünde, of olmadan kullanılır. Büyük fark şu: Türkçede “birkaç arkadaş” deriz, isim tekildir; İngilizcede isim her zaman çoğuldur: several friends. (Several of yalnızca belirli bir grubun önünde gelir: several of my friends, “arkadaşlarımdan birkaçı”.)
“I've invited several friends to the party.” – sayısı belli olmayan birkaç arkadaş.
“She has read several books on the subject.” – birkaç tane, ama çok değil.
Plenty of “bol bol”, “fazlasıyla yeterli” demektir: rahat, cömert bir miktar. Sayılabilen ve sayılamayan isimlerle kullanılır. Türkçede “bol vaktimiz var” derken arada hiçbir kelime yoktur, ama İngilizcede of mutlaka gerekir: plenty of time, “plenty time” değil.
“There's plenty of time before the movie starts.” – sayılamayan bir isimle plenty of (“bol bol vaktimiz var”).
“We have plenty of chairs for everyone.”
İngilizcede ikisi de çoğul olmalı: a number of employees have complained.
The number of ise “… sayısı” demektir: tek bir değer, bir rakam. Bu yüzden fiil tekildir. Burada Türkçeyle aynıdır: “Çalışan sayısı her yıl artıyor” → the number of employees is increasing.
Bir de şunu unutma: people İngilizcede çoğuldur, yanına da çoğul fiil gelir: people are, a number of people are.
“A number of employees have complained about the new policy.” – birçok çalışan, bu yüzden fiil çoğul: have.
“The number of employees is increasing every year.” – çalışan sayısı, yani tek bir rakam; bu yüzden fiil tekil: is.
“İnsanların çoğu” yapısının kelimesi kelimesine çevirisi. Genel bir ifadede of yoktur: most people. Most of yalnızca the, my, these, us, them gibi kelimelerden önce gelir.
“Çoğu insan” anlamında the kullanılmaz. The most “en çok” demektir ve üstünlük bildirir.
the, this/these, my… ya da us, them önünde most mutlaka of ister, tıpkı Türkçedeki “öğrencilerin çoğu” gibi.
İngilizcede people çoğuldur ve a number of sonrasında fiil çoğul olur.
İngilizcede genel ifadelerde yalnızca “çoğu insan” yapısı işe yarar: most + isim. “Most people prefer tea to coffee”, “Most children like sweets”. “İnsanların çoğu” yapısını çevirip “Most of people” deme. “En çok” anlamındaki the most da burada kullanılmaz: o üstünlük anlamı taşır, “She earns the most.” (En çok o kazanıyor.)
“Arkadaşlarımın çoğu”, “sınıftaki öğrencilerin çoğu”, “çoğumuz”: belirli bir grup için “-in çoğu”
Burada İngilizce Türkçeye benzer: the, this/these, my/your… ya da us/them önünde most mutlaka of ister. “Most of the students in my class…”, “most of us”.
İngilizcede several, a number of ve most (sayılabilen isimlerle) çoğul isim ister: several friends, a number of employees, most students. “Several friend” ya da “a number of employee” Türkçe düşünmenin tipik izidir. Several yalnızca sayılabilen isimlerle kullanılır: “several money” denmez.
Türkçede çoğul bir öznenin fiili de çoğu zaman tekil kalır: “Birçok çalışan şikâyet etti”, “Öğrenciler geldi”
İngilizcede fiil özneyle uyumlu olmalıdır. A number of insanlardan ya da şeylerin kendisinden söz eder, bu yüzden fiil çoğuldur: “A number of employees have complained.” The number of ise tek bir rakamdır, fiil tekildir: “The number of employees is increasing.” Kolay bir kural: a → çoğul, the → tekil. People de her zaman çoğuldur: people are.
💡 “Çoğu insan” (genel) = most people: the yok, of yok.
💡 the, this/these, my… ya da us/them geliyorsa most of gerekir.
💡 A number of = “birçok”, yani çoğul fiil. The number of = “… sayısı”, yani tekil fiil. Önündeki a mı, the mı, ona bak.
