Yetenek bildiren modal fiiller: can, could, be able to

A2 · TemelModal fiiller

Can, could ve be able to ile birinin şimdi, eskiden ya da ileride neler yapabildiğini söylersin. Türkçedeki “-ebil-” ekine benzer, ama her yerde değil.

Neler öğreneceksin

  • Şimdiki yetenek için can + fiilin yalın hâli (I can swim): araya to ya da able girmez
  • Geçmişteki genel bir yetenek için could + fiilin yalın hâli (I could swim as a child)
  • can fiilinin olmayan biçimleri için be able to: gelecek (will be able to), present perfect (have been able to), mastar (to be able to)
  • Geçmişte bir kez başarılan bir şey için could yerine was/were able to: tıpkı “-ebiliyordu” ile “-ebildi” arasındaki fark gibi
  • “Yüzme biliyor musun?” neden “Can you swim?” olur

Birinin yapabildikleri

Can, could ve be able to yetenek bildirir: fiziksel, zihinsel ya da sonradan öğrenilmiş bir beceri. Türkçede bunu fiile eklenen “-ebil-” ekiyle yaparsın (yüzebilirim, konuşabiliyor); İngilizcede ise fiilin önüne can gelir.

Can çok basittir: he/she/it ile değişmez (he can, sonunda -s yok), arkasından gelen fiil yalın hâldedir ve to almaz, soru ve olumsuz cümlelerde do kullanılmaz. “She can speak three languages.” doğrudur, “She can speaks…” yanlıştır. Olumsuz için can'e not eklenir: “He can't swim.” (uzun biçimi bitişik yazılır: cannot). “He don't can swim” yanlış.

Soru cümlesinde de dikkat: Türkçede soruyu mı ekiyle yaparsın (“Araba kullanabilir misin?”), kelime sırası değişmez. İngilizcede ise can öznenin önüne geçer: “Can you drive?” Ne “You can drive?” ne de “Do you can drive?”

Bir tuzak daha: öğrenilmiş beceriler için Türkçede “bilmek” fiili çok kullanılır (“Yüzme biliyor musun?”, “Araba kullanmayı biliyorum”). İngilizcede en doğal yol can'dir: “Can you swim?”, “I can drive.” Know how to da doğrudur (“I know how to drive”), ama “Do you know swimming?” ya da “I know to drive” yanlıştır. Can izin ya da olasılık da bildirebilir (“Can I open the window?”), ama bu derste yetenek üzerinde duruyoruz.

"She can speak three languages."
"When I was young, I could run fast."

Can mi, be able to mu?

Şimdiki zamanda yetenek bildirmenin en yaygın yolu can'dir. Be able to aynı anlama gelir, ama can'in kullanılamadığı zamanlarda da çalışır: örneğin gelecekte ya da present perfect ile. Şimdiki zamanda “I am able to swim” kulağa resmî ve biraz katı gelir; günlük konuşmada “I can swim” yeterli.

Türkçeyle asıl fark burada: “-ebil-” eki her zamana eklenebilir: “yapabileceğim”, “uyuyamadım”, “gelebilmek istiyorum”. Can'in ise yalnızca iki biçimi var: can ve could. Bu yüzden will, have/has ve to'dan sonra be able to kullanılır: “After the course, you will be able to cook Italian food.” “I haven't been able to sleep well this week.” “Will can”, “haven't could” ya da “to can” diye bir şey yoktur.

Bir uyarı daha: “-ebilmek” ekini be able to diye ezberleyip ikisini birlikte kullanma. “I can able to swim” ya da “I can be able to swim” yanlıştır: ya can, ya be able to.

"After the course, you will be able to cook Italian food."
"I haven't been able to sleep well this week."

Could mu, was/were able to mu?

Could, geçmişte bir dönem boyunca sahip olunan genel bir yeteneği anlatır. Bir kez başarılan belirli bir iş için İngilizce was/were able to (ya da managed to, “başardı”) tercih eder. Bu durumda could kulağa tuhaf gelebilir, hatta olayın aslında gerçekleşmediği izlenimini verebilir.

Türkçe burada sana yardım edebilir: “Büyükannem beş dil konuşabiliyordu” (genel yetenek → could) ile “Fırtınaya rağmen zirveye ulaşabildiler” (bir kez başardılar → were able to). Could'u “-ebildi” ekinin karşılığı diye ezberleme: “-ebildim, başardım” demek istiyorsan was/were able to ya da managed to düşün.

İki istisna var; bunlarda could belirli bir olay için de tamamen doğaldır: olumsuz cümleler (“I couldn't open the door.”, “Kapıyı açamadım”) ve see, hear, smell gibi algı fiilleri (“We could see the lake from the summit.”).

"Despite the storm, they were able to reach the summit. (bir kez başarılan iş)"
"My grandmother could speak five languages. (geçmişteki genel yetenek)"

Gerçek hayattan İngilizce örnekler

"She could play the piano at the age of five."
"We won't be able to attend the meeting."
"Were you able to fix the car?"
"After years of practice, she was able to run a marathon."

Dikkat

✗I can able to swim.
✓I can swim.

Can ile be able to aynı işi görür; ikisini birlikte kullanma. Şimdiki yetenek için can yeterli.

✗Do you know swimming?
✓Can you swim?

“Yüzme biliyor musun?” cümlesinin kelimesi kelimesine çevirisi. Beceriler için can kullanılır (ya da know how to: Do you know how to swim?).

✗We won't can attend the meeting.
✓We won't be able to attend the meeting.

“Toplantıya katılamayacağız” cümlesindeki gelecek zamanı will ile, “-ebil-” ekini can ile çevirmek olmaz. Will ya da won't kelimesinden sonra be able to gelir.

✗I haven't could sleep well this week.
✓I haven't been able to sleep well this week.

Can'in geçmiş zaman ortacı yoktur; present perfect ile been able to kullanılır.

✗Do you can drive?
✓Can you drive?

Can ile do kullanılmaz: soruda can öznenin önüne geçer. Olumsuzda da öyle: He can't swim, He don't can swim değil.

✗Despite the storm, they could reach the summit.
✓Despite the storm, they were able to reach the summit.

“Zirveye ulaşabildiler”, yani bir kez başardılar. Bunun için could değil, was/were able to (ya da managed to) kullanılır.

✗She can speaks three languages.
✓She can speak three languages.

Can'den sonra fiil hep yalın hâldedir; özne she olsa bile -s almaz.

Türkçeyle karşılaştırma

Türkçede yetenek fiile eklenen bir ekle anlatılır: “yüzebilirim”, “üç dil konuşabiliyor”

İngilizcede fiil değişmez; önüne can gelir ve fiil yalın hâlde kalır: “I can swim.”, “She can speak three languages.” Araya to ya da able girmez, üçüncü tekil kişide -s eklenmez: “She can speaks” ve “I can able to swim” yanlıştır.

Öğrenilmiş beceriler için Türkçede “bilmek” çok kullanılır: “Yüzme biliyor musun?”, “Araba kullanmayı biliyorum”

İngilizcede en doğal karşılık can'dir: “Can you swim?”, “I can drive.” Know how to da doğrudur (“Do you know how to swim?”), ama know tek başına bir beceriyle kullanılmaz: “Do you know swimming?” ya da “I know to drive” yanlıştır. Dil için ise know doğaldır: “I know English” de, “I can speak English” de olur.

“-ebil-” eki her zamana eklenir: “yapabileceğim”, “gelebilmek istiyorum”, “bu hafta iyi uyuyamadım”

Can'in mastarı, geçmiş zaman ortacı ya da gelecek biçimi yoktur; bunların hepsinde be able to gerekir: “We won't be able to attend the meeting.”, “I want to be able to speak English.”, “I haven't been able to sleep well this week.” “Gelemeyeceğiz” cümlesini kelimesi kelimesine çevirirsen “won't can” gibi var olmayan bir yapı çıkar.

Türkçede “-ebiliyordu” genel bir geçmiş yeteneği, “-ebildi” ise çoğu zaman bir kez başarılan bir işi anlatır

Bu ayrım İngilizcede işine yarar: “Büyükannem beş dil konuşabiliyordu” → could (“My grandmother could speak five languages.”); “Zirveye ulaşabildiler” → were able to ya da managed to (“Despite the storm, they were able to reach the summit.”). Olumsuz cümlelerde (couldn't) ve see/hear ile could belirli bir olay için de kullanılabilir.

Türkçede soru mı ekiyle yapılır, kelime sırası değişmez: “Araba kullanabilir misin?”

İngilizcede can öznenin önüne geçer: “Can you drive?” Do eklenmez: “Do you can drive?” yanlıştır. Olumsuzda da do yok: “He can't swim.”, “He don't can swim” değil. Geçmişte de aynı kural: “Were you able to fix the car?”, “Did you could…?” değil.

💡 Can'den sonra fiil yalın hâlde: I can swim. I can able to swim ya da I can to swim değil.

💡 “Yüzme biliyor musun?” → Can you swim? (ya da Do you know how to swim?).

💡 Will, have/has ya da to'dan sonra can kullanılmaz: be able to kullan.

💡 “-ebiliyordu” (genel yetenek) → could; “-ebildi” (bir kez başardı) → was/were able to ya da managed to.

Gerçek hayatta: yetenekler hakkında konuşmak

"Can you drive?"

"Yes, I can — I've been driving for ten years."

"Could you drive when you were a teenager?"

"No, I couldn't — I learned much later."
