Phrasal verb'ler: durumlara göre gruplar

B1 · OrtaPhrasal verb'ler

get up, hang up, check in, hand in: günlük konuşmada en doğal seçim çoğu zaman bir phrasal verb olur. Sözlükte ilk çıkan tek kelimelik fiil (postpone, investigate) doğrudur, ama genellikle daha resmî durur.

Neler öğreneceksin

  • Günlük rutin: get up, wake up, put on your clothes (put on bir nesne ister), go out
  • Telefonda: call back, hang up, pick up, hold on
  • Yolculukta: check in (giriş yapmak), set off (yola çıkmak), take off (havalanmak) ve get on / get off (binmek / inmek)
  • Okulda ve işte: hand in, look up, write down, cross out

"günlük rutin: I got up, put on my clothes, and went out."
"telefon görüşmesi: She picked up, we talked, then I hung up."

Burada Türkçe sana yardım eder: wake up = uyanmak, get up = (yataktan) kalkmak; ayrım aynıdır. “I woke up at six but didn't get up until seven.” cümlesi “Altıda uyandım ama yediye kadar kalkmadım” demektir. Giyinme eylemi put on, üzerinde taşımak ise wear olur: “He put on his coat” (ceketini giydi), “He is wearing a coat” (üzerinde ceket var).

"I woke up at six but didn't get up until seven."
"He put on his coat quickly and went out the door."

Telefonda

Bu birkaç phrasal verb ile neredeyse her telefon görüşmesini anlatabilirsin: hold on (bir saniye beklemek, hatta kalmak), pick up (telefonu açmak, cevap vermek), call back (geri aramak), hang up (telefonu kapatmak).

Dikkat: Türkçede telefonu “açar” ve “kapatırsın”, ama İngilizcede open the phone ya da close the phone denmez. Gelen aramayı açmak pick up (ya da answer the phone), görüşmeyi bitirmek hang up olur; turn off the phone ise telefonu tamamen kapatmak demektir. call back de tam olarak “geri aramak” demektir; zamirle kullanılınca zamir araya girer: “I'll call you back” (“I'll call back you” değil).

"Can you hold on a second?"
"She picked up on the third ring."
"I'll call you back after lunch."
"He hung up without saying goodbye."

Yolculukta

Bu fiiller, yola çıktığın andan uçağın kalkışına kadar sana eşlik eder: set off (yola çıkmak), check in (check-in yapmak, otele giriş yapmak), take off (havalanmak), get on / get off (binmek / inmek).

“Binmek” ve “inmek” için up ve down kullanılmaz: get down from the bus denmez. Otobüse, trene, uçağa ya da bisiklete get on ile biner, get off ile inersin. Arabaya ya da taksiye ise get in ile biner, get out of ile inersin. Bir de şuna dikkat et: Türkçede insan da kalkar, uçak da, otobüs de; İngilizcede insan get up yapar, uçak take off, otobüs ise leave.

"We set off early to beat the traffic."
"Please check in at least two hours before the flight."
"The plane took off right on time."
"Get on the bus at the next stop."

Okulda ve işte

Bu grup ödevler, raporlar ve ofisteki ya da sınıftaki günlük işler için kullanılır: hand in (teslim etmek), look up (sözlükte ya da internette bakmak), write down (not etmek, yazmak), cross out (üstünü çizmek).

Kelimesi kelimesine çeviriden kaçın: “ödevi teslim etmek” deliver the homework değil, hand in your homework olur; “bir kelimeye sözlükte bakmak” look up a word olur (look the dictionary değil); “not etmek” ise write down olur (write up değil, write up bir raporu ayrıntılı olarak yazmak demektir). check in yalnızca yolculuk ve oteller içindir: ödev hand in ile teslim edilir.

"Hand in your essay by Friday."
"Look up any word you don't know."
"Write down the main points."
"Cross out any mistakes neatly."

Phrasal verb mi, resmî eş anlamlısı mı?

Birçok phrasal verb için tek kelimelik bir eş anlamlısı vardır: put off / postpone, look into / investigate, find out / discover, get back / return.

“Look my cat” yanlış, “look at my cat” ise “kedime bir bak” demektir.

"Can we put off the meeting? (doğal, gündelik)"
"Could we postpone the meeting? (doğru, ama daha resmî)"

Gerçek hayattan İngilizce örnekler

"I got up late, so I had to rush to catch the bus."
"Hold on, I'm just picking up another call."
"We checked in online the night before the flight."
"Don't forget to hand in your permission slip tomorrow."

Dikkat

✗I need to postpone our coffee tomorrow.
✓I need to put off our coffee tomorrow. / Can we push our coffee back?

postpone yanlış değildir, ama arkadaşla içilecek bir kahve için fazla resmî durur. put off ya da push back günlük dile daha uygundur.

✗Please check in your homework by Friday.
✓Please hand in your homework by Friday.

check in yolculuk grubundandır (havalimanında ya da otelde giriş yapmak). Bir ödevi “teslim etmek” hand in olur.

✗I get down from the bus at the next stop.
✓I get off the bus at the next stop.

“Otobüsten inmek” down ile söylenmez: otobüsten, trenden ya da uçaktan get off ile inersin.

✗He closed the phone without saying goodbye.
✓He hung up without saying goodbye.

“Telefonu kapatmak” görüşmeyi bitirmek anlamındaysa hang up olur. close the phone İngilizcede kullanılmaz.

✗Can you look my cat this weekend?
✓Can you look after my cat this weekend?

Arkadaşlar arasında “Can we put off the meeting?”, “I'll look into it”, “I found out yesterday”, “When did you get back?” denir.

Gelen aramaya cevap vermek pick up ya da answer the phone, görüşmeyi bitirmek hang up olur: “He didn't pick up”, “He hung up on me”. “Turn off the phone” ise telefonu tamamen kapatmak demektir, görüşmeyi bitirmek değil.

Otobüs, tren, uçak, bisiklet: “get on the bus”, “get off the train”. Araba ya da taksi: “get in the car”, “get out of the taxi”. “Get down from the bus” kulağa çok tuhaf gelir.

Bazı Türkçe fiiller İngilizcede ikiye ayrılır: “bakmak” (look / look after), “giymek” (put on / wear)

“Kedime bakar mısın?” → “Can you look after my cat?” (look ya da look at değil). “Ceketini giydi” → “He put on his coat” (giyinme eylemi), “Ceket giyiyor” → “He is wearing a coat” (üzerinde taşıma). Türkçe fiili değil, anlamı çevir.

💡 Sözlükte ilk çıkan tek kelimelik fiil (postpone, investigate) genellikle resmîdir; konuşmada phrasal verb kullanmayı tercih et.

💡 Otobüse ya da trene binmek / inmek = get on / get off; arabaya = get in / get out of.

💡 Teslim etmek = hand in; not etmek = write down; kelimeye bakmak = look up; telefonu kapatmak = hang up.

"Around six thirty — I like to get dressed and go out for a run before work."

"Wow, early! I can barely get dressed and get out the door by eight."

"Ha! Well, tomorrow I have to check in for a flight at five, so it'll be even earlier."
