Geçişli ve geçişsiz phrasal verb'ler

B1 · OrtaPhrasal verb'ler

Turn off the lights (nesne gerekir) ve the car broke down (nesne almaz): her phrasal verb, belirli bir anlamda ya geçişlidir ya da geçişsiz.

Neler öğreneceksin

  • Geçişli bir phrasal verb, cümlenin tamamlanması için bir nesneye ihtiyaç duyar: turn off the lights, pick up the phone
  • Geçişsiz bir phrasal verb nesne almaz: the car broke down, she showed up late
  • Bu, ayrılabilme konusundan farklıdır: geçişsiz fiillerde fiille parçacık arasına konacak bir nesne zaten yoktur
  • Bazı phrasal verb'ler ikisini birden yapar: wake up (I woke up) ve wake someone up.

Türkçedeki geçişli ve geçişsiz fiil ayrımı sana yardımcı olur: “bir formu doldurmak” (fill out, İngiliz İngilizcesinde fill in da denir), “birini almak” (pick up), “ayakkabılarını giymek” (put on) bir nesne ister; “ortaya çıkmak, gelmek” (show up), “geç saate kadar oturmak” (stay up), alarmın “çalması” (go off) istemez. “Neyi? Kimi?” sorusu iyi bir ilk testtir: cevabı yoksa fiil büyük olasılıkla geçişsizdir. Her zaman işe yaramaz; emin değilsen sözlüğe bak.

"geçişli: Turn off the lights. ('the lights' gerekli)"
"geçişsiz: The car broke down.

İngilizcede go up geçişsizdir ve bir ek ekleyerek geçişli yapamazsın: “They have gone up the prices” yanlıştır. Geçişli anlam için başka bir fiil gerekir: “They have put up the prices” ya da “They have raised the prices.” Aynı şekilde: “The lights went off” (ışıklar söndü) ama “Turn off the lights” (ışıkları söndür).

Yerlere dikkat. Türkçede “Partiye geç geldi” ya da “Partide ortaya çıktı” dersin; yeri ek gösterir. İngilizcede show up fiilinden sonra yer için bir edat gerekir, genellikle at: “He showed up at the party.” (Gündelik Amerikan İngilizcesinde show up to the party da duyulur.) Edat olmadan the party bir nesne gibi görünür, ama show up nesne almaz.

"She showed up an hour late. ('She showed the party up' değil)"
"The alarm went off at 6 a.m. ('The alarm went the building off' değil)"

İngilizcede çoğu zaman hiçbir şey eklenmez; aynı phrasal verb hem “uyanmak” hem “uyandırmak” anlamına gelir: “I woke up at 7.” (“Saat 7'de uyandım”), “The noise woke me up.” (“Gürültü beni uyandırdı”). Değişen tek şey, nesne olup olmamasıdır. Bazı çiftlerde ise İngilizce, Türkçe gibi, iki ayrı fiil kullanır: The lights went off (ışıklar söndü) ama Turn off the lights (ışıkları söndür).

"I woke up at 7. (geçişsiz) / The noise woke me up. (geçişli)"
"The meeting wrapped up early. (geçişsiz) / Let's wrap up the meeting early. (geçişli)"

Gerçek hayattan İngilizce örnekler

"My laptop keeps breaking down at the worst moments."
"Could you turn off the TV when you leave the room?"
"Everyone showed up right on time for once."
"Please fill out this form before your appointment."

Dikkat

✗They have gone up the prices again.
✓They have put up the prices again.

“Fiyatlar arttı” → prices went up; “fiyatları artırdılar” → they put up (ya da raised) the prices. go up geçişsizdir ve nesne almaz.

✗Please turn off before you leave.
✓Please turn off the lights before you leave.

Türkçede “Çıkmadan önce kapat” demek yeterli, ama turn off burada geçişlidir: neyi kapatacağını söyle ya da it kullan (turn it off).

✗Turn off it before you leave.
✓Turn it off before you leave.

Nesne bir zamirse (it, them, me) fiille parçacığın arasına girer: turn it off, pick me up.

✗He showed up the party late.
✓He showed up at the party late.

Show up (gelmek, ortaya çıkmak) nesne almaz. Türkçede yeri “-e” ya da “-de” eki gösterir, İngilizcede ise bir edat gerekir: at the party.

Türkçeyle karşılaştırma

Türkçede geçişlilik bir ekle değişir: “uyanmak / uyandırmak”, “bitmek / bitirmek”, “sönmek / söndürmek”, “artmak / artırmak”

İngilizcede bazen aynı phrasal verb iki işi birden görür: “I woke up” / “The noise woke me up”, “The meeting wrapped up early” / “Let's wrap up the meeting.” Bazen de iki ayrı fiil gerekir: go up / put up (prices), go off / turn off (lights). Geçişsiz bir phrasal verb, bir nesne eklenerek geçişli yapılamaz: “They have gone up the prices” yanlıştır. Emin değilsen sözlükte fiilin nesne alıp almadığına bak.

Türkçede bilinen nesne kolayca düşer: “Çıkmadan önce kapat”, “İstasyondan alırım”

İngilizcede geçişli bir phrasal verb ile görünür bir nesne kullanılmalıdır, bir zamir bile olsa: “Please turn off the lights before you leave” ya da “Please turn it off before you leave”; “Please turn off before you leave” değil. Nesne bir zamirse fiille parçacığın arasına girer: turn it off, turn off it değil.

Türkçede yer, bir hâl ekiyle gösterilir: “Partiye geç geldi”, “Partide ortaya çıktı”

İngilizcede show up gibi geçişsiz bir fiilden sonra yer için bir edat gerekir: “He showed up at the party.” Edatı atlarsan (“He showed up the party”), yer bir nesne gibi görünür ve cümle yanlış olur.

💡 Kendine sor: “Neyi? Kimi?” sorusunun bir cevabı var mı? Yoksa (gelmek, geç saate kadar oturmak) phrasal verb büyük olasılıkla geçişsizdir.

💡 Türkçedeki “-dır / -t” gibi ettirgen ekler İngilizcede yoktur: ya aynı phrasal verb nesneyle kullanılır (wake someone up) ya da başka bir fiil gerekir (put up the prices).

💡 Geçişli bir fiilde nesneyi düşürme: turn it off, pick it up.
