Less i least

B1 · Średnio zaawansowanyPrzymiotniki

Less i least działają jak more i most, tylko w przeciwną stronę: less expensive znaczy „mniej drogi”, a nie „niedrogi”. Polskie „mniej / najmniej” bardzo tu pomaga.

Czego się nauczysz

  • Less + przymiotnik + than: porównanie dwóch rzeczy „w dół” (less expensive than = mniej drogi niż)
  • The least + przymiotnik: najniższy stopień w grupie (the least expensive = najmniej drogi)
  • Less/least łączymy zwykle z dłuższymi przymiotnikami i imiesłowami (less expensive, less qualified); przy krótkich naturalniej brzmi not as … as albo przeciwny przymiotnik (shorter zamiast less tall)
  • Less stoi przed rzeczownikami niepoliczalnymi, fewer – przed policzalnymi w liczbie mnogiej; po polsku oba to „mniej”

Porównanie „w dół”

Znasz już more i most do porównań „w górę”. Less i least robią to samo w przeciwnym kierunku. „This laptop is less expensive than that one” nie znaczy, że laptop jest tani – to samo porównanie co z more, tylko odwrócone.

To prawie dokładnie polskie „mniej drogi niż” i „najmniej drogi”.

"This laptop is less expensive than that one."
"This is the least expensive laptop in the store."

The least: najniższy stopień w grupie

Tak jak most wskazuje najwyższy stopień spośród trzech lub więcej rzeczy, the least wskazuje najniższy. „Of all the candidates, he was the least qualified” znaczy, że każdy inny kandydat miał wyższe kwalifikacje.

Nie zapominaj o the – w polskim przedimka nie ma: the least interesting book, nie „least interesting book”. I nie myl the least („najmniej”) z at least („co najmniej, przynajmniej”).

"Of all the candidates, he was the least qualified."
"This is the least interesting book of the three."

Less czy fewer – nie myl ich

Polskie „mniej” pasuje do wszystkiego: mniej czasu, mniej pieniędzy, mniej przyjaciół. Angielski rozróżnia: less stoi przed rzeczownikami niepoliczalnymi (less time, less money, less salt), a fewer – przed policzalnymi w liczbie mnogiej (fewer people, fewer friends, fewer features). „Less features” to częsty błąd nawet u osób mówiących płynnie.

Z kolei people jest policzalne: fewer people.

Przed przymiotnikiem (less expensive, less dangerous) zawsze jest less, nigdy fewer. Fewer zastępuje less tylko bezpośrednio przed rzeczownikiem policzalnym w liczbie mnogiej.

Less to „mniej”, a nie „mniejszy”. „Ten pokój jest mniejszy” to „This room is smaller”, a nie „This room is less” ani „lesser”.

"This phone has fewer features but is much less expensive."
"He has fewer friends than his brother."
"This room is smaller than that one."

Prawdziwy angielski

"This route is less scenic, but it's a lot faster."
"She's the least experienced person on the team, but she's a fast learner."
"I've been feeling less stressed since I started exercising."
"Of the two apartments, this one is definitely the less expensive."

Uwaga

✗This phone has less features.
✓This phone has fewer features.

Features to rzeczownik policzalny w liczbie mnogiej, więc fewer. Polskie „mniej funkcji” tego nie podpowiada.

✗He has less friends than me.
✓He has fewer friends than me.

„Mniej przyjaciół” – ale przyjaciół da się policzyć, więc fewer friends.

✗This route is lesser dangerous than the other one.
✓This route is less dangerous than the other one.

Lesser to osobne, formalne słowo (a lesser evil). Zwykły stopień wyższy to less.

✗Of all the candidates, he was the less qualified.
✓Of all the candidates, he was the least qualified.

Porównanie wśród trzech lub więcej osób (all the candidates) wymaga stopnia najwyższego: the least – „najmniej”, nie „mniej”.

✗My room is less than yours.
✓My room is smaller than yours.

„Mniejszy” to smaller. Less znaczy „mniej” i stoi przed przymiotnikiem lub rzeczownikiem niepoliczalnym.

✗This is least interesting book of the three.
✓This is the least interesting book of the three.

Przed least + przymiotnik + rzeczownik stoi the.

To niemal dokładny odpowiednik: „less expensive than”, „the least experienced”. Pamiętaj tylko o the przed least i o than zamiast „from”.

Polskie „mniej” nie rozróżnia rzeczowników policzalnych i niepoliczalnych: „mniej pieniędzy”, „mniej funkcji”, „mniej ludzi”.

Angielski wymaga wyboru: „less money” (niepoliczalne), ale „fewer features”, „fewer people” (policzalne w liczbie mnogiej).

💡 „Mniej” = less, „mniejszy” = smaller, „najmniej” = the least, „co najmniej” = at least.

Z życia wzięte: wybór między dwoma laptopami

"So which one are you going to get?"

"Probably this one — it's less powerful, but it's also way less expensive."

"Is that a big deal for what you need it for?"

"Not really — it's the least demanding thing I'll use it for anyway."
