전달 동사(reporting verbs)

She suggested going to the cinema. He promised to call. He denied taking it.

  • suggest, admit, deny, apologize (for)는 -ing 형태(동명사)를 써요.
  • promise, refuse, agree, offer는 to부정사를 써요.
  • warn, advise, remind, invite는 목적어 + to부정사, insist는 that절, accuse는 목적어 + of + -ing예요.

""Let's go to the cinema," she said. → She suggested going to the cinema."

-ing를 쓰는 동사

suggest, admit, deny는 -ing 형태를, apologize는 for + -ing를 써요. to부정사는 쓰지 않아요. “영화 보러 가자고 제안했어요”는 “She suggested going to the cinema.”이고, “suggested to go”라고 하지 않아요. “저한테 가자고 제안했어요”라고 해도 “suggested me to go”는 틀려요. suggest는 to부정사 앞에 사람을 목적어로 두지 않아요.

“돈을 가져가지 않았다고 부인했어요”, “꽃병을 깼다고 인정했어요”를 옮길 때도 to부정사가 아니라 -ing예요: “She denied taking the money.”, “He admitted breaking the vase.” 더 이전의 일임을 강조하고 싶다면 having + 과거분사(denied having taken)도 쓸 수 있어요. admit은 to + -ing(admitted to breaking)도 되지만, to부정사(admitted to break)는 틀려요. He admitted (that) he hadn't read my email.

She suggested that we go / that we should go. apologize는 “-해서 사과했어요”에 해당하는데, 전치사 for 뒤에는 반드시 -ing가 와요: He apologized for being late. 사과한 상대를 넣으려면 to가 필요해요: He apologized to me.

"She suggested going to the cinema."
"He admitted breaking the vase."
"She denied taking the money."
"He apologized for being late."

promise, refuse, agree, offer는 to부정사를 써요: 전화하겠다고 약속하다 = promise to call, 서명하기를 거부하다 = refuse to sign, 하기로 동의하다 = agree to do, 도와주겠다고 하다 = offer to help.

“He agreed to do it.”이 맞고, “He accepted to do it”은 틀려요. accept 뒤에는 명사가 와요(accept an offer, accept the job). “He offered me to help”가 아니라 “He offered to help me.”이고, promise도 보통 “He promised to call me.” He promised me (that) he would call.

"He promised to call me."
"She refused to sign it."
"He agreed to do it."
"He offered to help me."

“-라고”는 to, “-지 말라고”는 not to에 해당해요. He warned me not to go near the edge.

(He insisted that I stay, 특히 미국 영어). 영국 영어에서는 that I should stay도 써요. insist on + -ing도 가능해요: He insisted on me staying. “꼭 저녁 먹고 가라고 했어요”를 “insisted me to stay”로 옮기면 틀려요. insist는 목적어 + to부정사를 받지 않아요.

accuse는 목적어 + of + -ing예요: She accused me of breaking her phone. 전치사 of 뒤니까 동사원형(“of break”)이 아니라 -ing이고, “accused me that I broke”도 틀려요.

He explained that… 또는 He explained to me that…이라고 하고, “He explained me”라고 하지 않아요.

"He warned me not to go near the edge."
"He insisted that I stay for dinner."
"She accused me of breaking her phone."

"She advised me to see a doctor."
"He explained that he had been late because of traffic."
"She reminded me not to forget my keys."
"He offered to carry the bags."

✗He explained me that he was late.
✓He explained to me that he was late. / He explained that he was late.

✗She suggested to go to the cinema.
✓She suggested going to the cinema.

“가자고 제안했어요”의 suggest는 -ing를 써요(또는 that절: She suggested that we go). “저한테”를 넣은 suggested me to go도 틀려요.

✗She denied to take the money.
✓She denied taking the money.

✗He apologized me for being late.
✓He apologized to me for being late.

✗She accused me of break her phone.
✓She accused me of breaking her phone.

전치사 뒤에는 반드시 -ing가 와요. apologized for being late도 마찬가지예요.

✗He accepted to do it.
✓He agreed to do it.

“하기로 했어요”, “수락했어요” + 동작은 agree to예요. accept 뒤에는 명사가 와요(accept an offer).

✗He warned not to go near the edge.
✓He warned me not to go near the edge.

영어는 동사마다 형태가 정해져 있어요. to부정사를 쓰는 건 promise, refuse, agree, offer(사람을 넣으면 warn, advise, remind, invite)예요. suggest, admit, deny는 -ing예요: “She suggested going to the cinema”, “She denied taking the money”. “suggested to go”, “denied to take”는 틀려요.

“돈을 가져간 것을 부인했어요” = denied taking the money, “늦은 것을 사과했어요” = apologized for being late. 전치사 뒤에는 반드시 이 -ing 형태가 와요: accused me of breaking, insisted on paying.

영어의 explain, suggest, apologize는 바로 뒤에 사람을 둘 수 없어요: “He explained (to me) that he was late”, “He apologized to me”, “She suggested going…”. 사람을 바로 뒤에 둘 수 있는 건 warn, advise, remind, tell, accuse 같은 동사예요: “She advised me to see a doctor”, “He warned me not to go near the edge”.

“하기로 동의했어요”, “하겠다고 했어요”처럼 뒤에 동작이 오면 agree to + 동사예요: “He agreed to do it.” accept 뒤에는 명사가 오고(accept an offer, accept the job), to부정사는 오지 않아요.

💡 전치사 뒤에는 언제나 -ing: accused me of breaking, apologized for being late, insisted on paying.

💡 “저한테 설명했어요” → He explained to me. explained me라고 하지 않아요.

"How did the meeting go?"

"Not great. He accused me of missing the deadline, but I explained that the client changed the brief twice."

"Did he apologize?"

"Eventually. He admitted he hadn't read my email and promised to double-check next time."
