The man who is standing by the door → the man standing by the door.

다만 둘을 함께 빼야 해요. who만 빼면 “The man is standing by the door is my uncle.”처럼 한 문장에 동사가 두 개 남아요. who도 is도 빼서 “The man standing by the door is my uncle.”

"The man who is standing by the door is my uncle."
"The man standing by the door is my uncle."

-ing는 “who is …ing” 같은 진행형만 대신하는 게 아니라 현재시제도 대신해요: “people who live near the airport” → “people living near the airport”. lives, stands 같은 동사의 변화형은 남길 수 없어요. 또 “분사니까 -ed”라고 생각해서 “people lived near the airport”라고 하면 틀려요. “the man who stole my bike”를 “the man stealing my bike”로 줄이면 지금 훔치고 있는 것처럼 들려요.

자세를 나타내는 “앉아 있는”, “서 있는”, “누워 있는”은 한국어로는 “-아/어 있는” 상태 표현이지만 영어에서는 -ing를 써요: the woman sitting next to you, the man standing by the door, a dog lying on the sofa.

"People living near the airport hear constant noise."
"The woman sitting next to you is my colleague."

“어제 서명된 서류” → “the documents signed yesterday”, “사고로 손상된 차” → “the car damaged in the accident”처럼 한국어에 “-된”, “-받은”이 있으면 쉽게 알 수 있어요.

그래서 “the cake baked by my mother”, “the report written by the intern”이고, 한국어의 “엄마가”, “인턴이”는 by 뒤로 가요. “The cake baking by my mother”라고 하면 케이크가 직접 무언가를 굽고 있다는 뜻이 돼요.

"The cake baked by my mother was delicious."
"The report written by the intern had several errors."

분사 뒤에 다른 말(by my mother, near the airport, to the party, for the team)이 붙어 있으면 분사구 전체가 명사 뒤에 와요. 영어는 “the players chosen for the team”이에요. “the invited guests to the party”처럼 앞에 두면 틀려요.

형용사처럼 명사 앞에 둬요: “a broken window”(깨진 창문), “a sleeping baby”(자고 있는 아기), “the invited guests”(초대받은 손님들). 뒤에 말이 붙는 순간 전체가 명사 뒤로 가요: “the guests invited to the party”.

"The players chosen for the team celebrated."
"The guests invited to the party arrived early."

"The documents signed yesterday are on my desk."
"The children playing in the yard are my nephews."
"The car damaged in the accident was repaired."
"The letter left on the table is for you."

✗The cake baking by my mother was delicious.
✓The cake baked by my mother was delicious.

✗The invited guests to the party arrived early.
✓The guests invited to the party arrived early.

to the party가 붙어 있으니 invited to the party 전체를 명사 뒤에 둬요.

✗The man stands by the door is my uncle.
✓The man standing by the door is my uncle.

✗The man is standing by the door is my uncle.
✓The man standing by the door is my uncle.

✗People lived near the airport hear constant noise.
✓People living near the airport hear constant noise.

영어에서는 뒤에 말이 붙은 분사구는 명사 뒤에 와요: “The guests invited to the party arrived early.”, “The letter left on the table is for you.”

케이크와 보고서는 “구워진”, “쓰인” 쪽이니까 과거분사예요: “the cake baked by my mother”, “the report written by the intern”.

“공항 근처에 사는 사람들”은 능동이라 “people living …”, “사고로 손상된 차”는 수동이라 “the car damaged in the accident”, “서 있는 남자”는 상태처럼 들려도 “the man standing …”

💡 줄일 때는 who/that과 be동사를 함께 빼요.

"Which one is your brother?"

"The guy standing near the window, in the blue jacket."

"Oh, the one talking to the woman invited by Sarah?"

"Yes, exactly."

  • 능동의 뜻 → -ing(현재시제도 마찬가지: who live → living, 자세는 sitting, standing).
