at 9 o'clock, on Monday, in March.

  • at: 시각과 몇몇 고정 표현에 써요(at 9 o'clock, at night, at the weekend)
  • on: 요일과 날짜에 써요(on Monday, on March 5th, on my birthday)
  • in: 더 긴 기간에 써요(in March, in 2020, in the morning, in winter)
  • “에”만 보고 고르면 틀리기 쉬운 곳: “월요일에” → on Monday, “밤에” → at night

"at 9 o'clock (정확한 시점)"
"on Monday (하루)"
"in March (더 긴 기간)"

at은 시각, 그리고 하나의 시점처럼 쓰이는 몇몇 고정 표현에 써요: at 9 o'clock, at noon, at midnight, at night, at the weekend.

“8시에”, “정오에”, “자정에”는 at이에요(at 8, at noon, at midnight). “밤에”는 at night이고, “in the night”이라고 하지 않아요. “주말에”는 영국 영어로 at the weekend, 미국 영어로 on the weekend예요. 둘 다 맞지만 “in the weekend”는 틀려요.

"The train leaves at 6:45."
"I never go out at night."
"We're staying home at the weekend."

on은 요일, 날짜, 특별한 날에 써요: on Monday, on March 5th, on my birthday, on New Year's Day.

“월요일에”, “7월 4일에”의 “에”를 in이나 at으로 옮기기 쉬운데, 하루를 가리키면 언제나 on이에요: on Thursday, on July 4th, on Christmas Day. “in Thursday”나 “at Monday”라고 하지 않아요.

"I have a dentist appointment on Thursday."
"She was born on July 4th."
"We always cook a big meal on Christmas Day."

더 긴 기간에는 in

in은 달, 해, 계절, 세기, 그리고 하루 중의 때(밤 제외)에 써요: in March, in 2020, in summer, in the 21st century, in the morning.

“9월에” → in September, “1998년에” → in 1998, “봄에” → in spring이에요. 하루 중의 때는 the와 함께 써요: “아침에” → in the morning, “오후에” → in the afternoon, “저녁에” → in the evening. the를 빼고 “in morning”이라고 하지 않아요.

“월요일 아침에” → on Monday morning, “시험 전날 밤에” → on the night before the exam.

"School starts again in September."
"It rarely snows in spring here."
"I do my best thinking in the morning."

"Let's meet at 3 o'clock on Friday."
"The store is closed at night."
"My birthday is in June, on the 14th."
"I always feel sleepy in the afternoon."

✗The film starts on 8 o'clock.
✓The film starts at 8 o'clock.

“8시에”처럼 시각에는 at을 써요. on은 요일, 날짜, 특별한 날(on my birthday)에 써요.

✗Her birthday is at March.
✓Her birthday is in March.

✗I'll call you in Monday.
✓I'll call you on Monday.

✗I never go out in the night.
✓I never go out at night.

✗We're staying home in the weekend.
✓We're staying home at the weekend.

“주말에”는 in이 아니라 at the weekend(영국 영어)나 on the weekend(미국 영어)예요.

✗Let's meet on next Monday.
✓Let's meet next Monday.

✗We always cook a big meal at Christmas Day.
✓We always cook a big meal on Christmas Day.

한국어로는 둘 다 “크리스마스에”지만, 크리스마스 무렵의 시기는 at Christmas, 12월 25일 그날은 on Christmas Day예요.

시각은 at(at 9 o'clock), 요일과 날짜는 on(on Monday, on March 5th), 달·해·계절은 in(in March, in 2020, in summer)이에요. “I'll call you in Monday”나 “Her birthday is at March”는 이 구분을 놓친 실수예요.

영어에서 하루 중의 때는 in the로 말해요: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening. 밤만 예외라서 at night(the 없음)이에요. I woke up in the night. 주말은 at the weekend(영국 영어) / on the weekend(미국 영어)예요.

영어는 next, last, this, every가 붙으면 전치사를 쓰지 않아요: next Monday, last week, this morning, every day. “on next Monday”나 “in this morning”이라고 하지 않아요.

💡 “9시에” → at 9, “월요일에” → on Monday, “3월에” → in March.

💡 “아침에” → in the morning이지만, “밤에” → at night.

💡 특별한 날에도 on을 써요: on Christmas Day, on my birthday. next, last, this 앞에는 전치사를 쓰지 않아요.

"When are you free this week?"

"I'm busy in the mornings, but I'm free at 3 on Wednesday."

"Perfect — let's meet at the café at 3, on Wednesday, then."

"Sounds good — see you then!"
