listen to, wait for, depend on처럼 많은 동사는 늘 정해진 전치사와 함께 써요.

  • 전치사는 동사와 한 덩어리이고, 어떤 동사는 전치사를 바꾸면 뜻이 달라져요(look for / look at / look after)
  • 자주 쓰는 그룹: + to(listen, talk, belong), + for(wait, look, apologize), + on(depend, rely, insist), + of(think, dream, consist)

“음악을 듣다”, “버스를 기다리다”, “열쇠를 찾다”, “화면을 보다”는 영어에서 전치사가 필요해요: listen to music, wait for the bus, look for my keys, look at the screen.

"listen to music (“listen music”이 아니에요)"
"wait for the bus (“wait the bus”가 아니에요)"

+ to: listen to, talk to, belong to, apply to. + for: wait for, look for, apologize for, ask for. + on: depend on, rely on, insist on, concentrate on. + of: think of, dream of, consist of, remind (someone) of. + with: agree with, deal with, cope with.

한국어 조사와 잘 맞아서 쉬운 짝도 있어요: concentrate on(~에 집중하다), belong to(~에 속하다), complain about(~에 대해 불평하다), agree with(~와 같은 생각이다). 하지만 맞지 않는 짝이 더 많아요. depend on(“~에 달려 있다”지만 to나 of가 아니에요), think of / think about, dream of / dream about, consist of(“~로 구성되다”지만 with가 아니에요), insist on, rely on, count on이에요. “실수를 사과하다”는 apologize for the mistake, “도움을 요청하다”는 ask for help예요.

이것도 기억하세요: hope for(좋은 일을 바라다: hope for good news), look forward to + -ing(~을 기대하다: I look forward to hearing from you, “to hear”가 아니에요), 그리고 blame: blame something on someone(무엇을 누구 탓으로 돌리다) 또는 blame someone for something.

"I'm looking for my glasses."
"This decision depends on the budget."
"She reminds me of my old teacher."

“듣다”는 listen to(listen at이 아니에요), “기다리다”는 wait for(wait to가 아니에요)예요. look for(찾다), look at(보다), look after(돌보다)는 같은 동사에 전치사만 달라도 뜻이 완전히 달라져요.

“계획에 대해 논의하다” → discuss the plan, “누구와 결혼하다” → marry someone, “방에 들어가다” → enter the room, “지민에게 전화하다” → call Jimin, “질문에 답하다” → answer the question. 또 “누구를 떠올리게 하다”는 remind someone of예요: “She reminds me of my sister.” remind someone to는 “누구에게 무엇을 하라고 상기시키다”라는 다른 뜻이에요: Remind me to call her.

"I'm waiting for my friend."
"Can you look after the kids tonight?"

"I don't really believe in luck."
"She's been looking for a new job for months."
"We can always rely on him in an emergency."
"He finally apologized for what he said."

✗Listen me! This is important.
✓Listen to me! This is important.

This is important.”

✗I'm waiting the bus.
✓I'm waiting for the bus.

✗It depends of your budget.
✓It depends on your budget.

“그건 본인에게 달렸어요”도 It depends on you예요.

✗She reminds me my sister.
✓She reminds me of my sister.

✗I'm not agree with that decision.
✓I don't agree with that decision.

✗Let's discuss about the weekend plan.
✓Let's discuss the weekend plan.

“주말 계획에 대해 논의해요”라고 해도 discuss는 목적어를 바로 받아요. about을 쓰고 싶다면 talk about the weekend plan이라고 하세요.

✗She married with her college friend.
✓She married her college friend.

“대학 친구와 결혼했어요”의 “와”를 with로 옮기지 마세요. marry는 목적어를 바로 받아요. get married to her college friend라고도 해요.

영어에서 이 동사들은 목적어 앞에 전치사가 필요해요: listen to the radio, wait for the bus, look for my keys, look at the screen, ask for help. “좋은 소식을 기다리고 있어요”처럼 “바라다”라는 뜻이라면 hope for(“We're hoping for good news”)를 써요.

영어에서는 이 동사들이 목적어를 바로 받고 전치사를 쓰지 않아요: discuss the plan(“discuss about”이 아니에요), marry someone(“marry with”가 아니에요), enter the room(“enter into”가 아니에요), call Jimin(“call to Jimin”이 아니에요), answer the question(“answer to the question”이 아니에요. reply to the question이라면 to가 필요해요).

한국어 조사로 전치사를 고르면 틀리기 쉬운 동사들이에요: depend on(“It depends on the weather”), think of / think about(“I'm thinking of moving”), consist of, insist on + -ing(insisted on paying), succeed in + -ing(succeeded in finishing). believe는 “말을 믿다”라면 believe someone이지만, “존재나 가치를 믿다”라면 believe in이에요: I don't really believe in luck.

💡 “음악을 듣다”, “버스를 기다리다”, “열쇠를 찾다”, “화면을 보다”는 영어에서 전치사가 필요해요: listen to, wait for, look for, look at.

💡 조사를 옮기지 마세요: discuss the plan, marry someone, enter the room, call Jimin에는 전치사가 없어요.

💡 look forward to, insist on, succeed in 뒤의 동사는 -ing 형태예요.

"Are you still waiting for Sam?"

"Yes, he texted — he's looking for parking right now."

"OK, I'll wait with you. It depends on the traffic, I guess."

"True. Let's just relax and talk about the weekend plan."
