reason for, solution to, interest in:

  • 명사의 전치사는 관련된 동사나 형용사의 전치사와 같은 경우가 많아요(늘 그렇지는 않아요): interested in → interest in, depend on → dependence on
  • 자주 나오는 그룹: + for(reason, need, demand), + to(solution, answer, response), + in(interest, increase, belief), + with(relationship, problem)
  • 이런 명사에서 한국어 “~의”는 of가 아닌 경우가 많고, “~에 대한”도 늘 about은 아니에요: 지연의 이유 → reason for, 가격 상승 → increase in, ~에 대한 관심 → interest in

"the reason for the delay (“reason of”는 틀린 표현)"
"an interest in art (“interest for”는 틀린 표현)"

형용사 good at은 명사가 되면 “a talent at”이 아니라 “a talent for”예요.

“~의 이유” → reason for: “the reason for the delay”이고, of가 아니에요.

“~의 필요, ~이 필요함” → need for: “a real need for better public transport”. (“in need of”라는 표현도 있지만 다른 표현이에요: “The house is in need of repair.”)

“가격(의) 상승, 가격 인상” → an increase in prices: in 뒤에는 오르는 대상이 와요. of는 오른 양을 나타내요: “an increase of 10%”.

“~에 대한 해결책” → solution to: “a solution to this problem”이고, about이 아니에요. “~에 대한 답, 반응”도 answer to, response to예요.

“~에 대한 관심” → interest in, “~에 대한 믿음” → belief in, “~에 대한 열정” → passion for, “~에 대한 존경” → respect for. 형용사 passionate about과 헷갈려서 “passion about”이라고 하기 쉬워요.

반대로 “~에 대한”이 about과 잘 맞는 명사도 있어요: concern about(“concern about climate change”), doubt about(“There's no doubt about his talent.”), opinion about/on/of. “~에 대한 태도”는 attitude to(영국 영어에서 더 흔함) 또는 toward(s)예요.

경험: “experience of”는 영국 영어에서 더 흔하고, 미국 영어에서는 “experience in”(분야)이나 “experience with”(도구, 사람)를 주로 써요. “experience for”나 “experience to”는 틀린 표현이에요.

"She's good at languages. → She has a talent for languages."
"I'm not sure about this. → I have my doubts about this."

"There's no simple solution to this problem."
"I have a lot of respect for her work ethic."
"There's been a sharp increase in demand this year."
"What's the reason for the sudden change?"

✗What's the reason of your decision?
✓What's the reason for your decision?

✗There's a real need of better public transport.
✓There's a real need for better public transport.

(“in need of”는 다른 표현이에요.)

✗There's been an increase of prices recently.
✓There's been an increase in prices recently.

오르는 대상은 in 뒤에 와요. of는 오른 양만 나타내요(an increase of 10%).

✗She has a strong interest about classical music.
✓She has a strong interest in classical music.

✗We need a solution about this problem.
✓We need a solution to this problem.

“이 문제에 대한 해결책”은 solution to예요. answer to, response to도 같은 그룹이에요.

✗She has a real passion about music.
✓She has a real passion for music.

형용사는 passionate about이지만, 명사 passion은 for와 함께 써요.

그대로 옮기면 “reason of”, “need of”, “increase of prices”가 되는데, 모두 틀린 표현이에요. 자연스러운 영어는 “reason for”, “need for”, “increase in prices”예요.

이 명사들은 about을 쓰지 않아요: “an interest in art”, “a solution to this problem”, “a passion for music”, “respect for my teacher”. about과 잘 맞는 건 concern about, doubt about, opinion about 정도예요.

이럴 때는 직감을 믿어도 돼요: “a good relationship with my colleagues”(와 → with), “a strong influence on his younger brother”(에 → on), “concern about the interview”(에 대한 → about).

💡 “~의”를 of로 옮기지 마세요: 이유 → reason for, 필요 → need for, 가격 상승 → increase in.

💡 “~에 대한”도 늘 about은 아니에요: interest in, solution to, passion for, respect for. about은 concern, doubt, opinion에 써요.

"What's your opinion of the new policy?"

"Honestly, I have some doubts about it — I don't see a clear reason for it."

"I get that. What would be a better solution to the problem, do you think?"

"I'm not sure yet, but I appreciate your interest in the topic."
