because of, due to, in spite of는 두세 단어가 모여 하나의 전치사처럼 쓰여요.

  • 복합 전치사는 두세 단어가 모여 하나의 전치사처럼 쓰이는 표현이에요: because of, due to, in spite of, according to
  • 자주 쓰는 그룹: because of / due to / owing to(원인), in spite of / despite(대조), according to(출처), in terms of / as regards(주제), as a result of(결과)

“~ 때문에” = because of, “~로 인해” = due to, “~에도 불구하고” = in spite of / despite, “~의 결과로” = as a result of, “~에 따르면” = according to예요.

"because of the rain (완전한 절이 아니에요)"
"in spite of the delay (완전한 절이 아니에요)"

많은 복합 전치사에는 뜻은 거의 같지만 쓰는 방식이 다른 접속사가 짝으로 있어요. because of(전치사, + 명사구)와 because(접속사, + 주어와 동사가 있는 절), despite / in spite of(전치사)와 although / even though(접속사)예요.

명사 뒤의 “때문에”는 because of, 절 뒤의 “때문에”나 “-아서/-어서”는 because예요.

“although it was raining”이라고 하거나, 연결 고리를 넣어 “despite the fact that it was raining”이라고 해요.

또 하나: “날씨로 인해 취소됐어요”의 “(으)로”를 by로 옮겨 “cancelled by the bad weather”라고 하기 쉬운데, 원인을 말할 때는 because of나 due to가 자연스러워요: “It was cancelled because of the rain.”

"because of the traffic (명사구) / because the traffic was bad (절)"
"despite the rain (명사구) / although it rained (절)"

원인: because of, due to, owing to, as a result of. 대조: despite, in spite of. 출처: according to. 주제: in terms of, as regards, with regard to.

“according the report”나 “according with the report”라고 하지 않아요. 자기 의견은 “in my opinion”이나 “I think”로 말해요.

in terms of / with regard to = “~ 면에서”, “~에 관해서는”이에요. “in regard of”는 표준 영어가 아니에요. “with regard to”, “in regard to”, “as regards”가 맞아요. 한국어는 복수를 꼭 표시하지 않아서 “in term of”라고 쓰기 쉬운데, in terms of에는 -s가 반드시 붙어요.

전통적으로 due to는 주로 be동사 뒤에 썼지만(“The delay was due to a technical fault.”), 지금은 문장 맨 앞이나 다른 동사 뒤에 쓰는 것도 아주 자연스러워요(“The flight was delayed due to a technical problem.”). owing to도 뜻이 같고, 조금 더 격식 있고 영국식으로 들려요.

"According to the report, sales rose by 10%."
"In terms of cost, this option is cheaper."
"The delay was due to a technical fault."

"The match went ahead despite the heavy rain."
"Due to unforeseen circumstances, the event has been postponed."
"According to the latest data, unemployment has fallen."
"In terms of quality, this is by far the best option."

✗Despite of the rain, we went for a walk.
✓Despite the rain, we went for a walk.

despite는 한 단어이고 of가 붙지 않아요. of가 붙는 건 같은 뜻의 in spite of뿐이에요.

✗The trip was cancelled because of it was raining.
✓The trip was cancelled because it was raining.

because of는 명사구(“비 때문에”), because는 절(“비가 와서”)과 함께 써요.

✗The delay was due the storm.
✓The delay was due to the storm.

원인을 말하는 due에는 반드시 to가 필요해요: due to + 명사구.

✗According with the report, sales rose by 10%.
✓According to the report, sales rose by 10%.

“~에 따르면”은 언제나 according to예요. according with나 according만 쓰지 않아요.

✗Despite it was raining, we went for a walk.
✓Although it was raining, we went for a walk.

또는 “despite the fact that it was raining”이라고 해요.

✗In term of price, this is the better option.
✓In terms of price, this is the better option.

“가격 면에서”는 in terms of예요.

명사구라면 “because of the rain”, 주어와 동사가 있는 절이라면 “because it was raining”이에요. “Because of it was raining”이나 “because the rain”은 이 둘을 섞은 실수예요.

영어의 despite / in spite of 뒤에는 명사구만 와요: “despite the rain”. 절이 이어지면 “although it was raining”이나 “despite the fact that it was raining”이라고 해요. “despite it was raining”은 틀린 문장이에요. 또 despite는 of 없이 한 단어이고, of가 붙는 건 in spite of예요.

“~에 따르면”은 according to예요. “according the report”처럼 to를 빼거나 “according with the report”라고 하면 틀려요. 자기 의견에는 according to me 대신 “in my opinion”이나 “I think”를 써요.

“(으)로”를 by로 옮기면 “The trip was cancelled by the bad weather”처럼 어색한 문장이 돼요. 원인은 because of, due to, owing to로 말해요: “The trip was cancelled because of the bad weather.”

💡 명사 뒤의 “때문에”, “~에도 불구하고” → because of, despite.

💡 despite에는 of가 붙지 않아요. of가 붙는 건 in spite of뿐이에요.

💡 “보고서에 따르면” = according to the report. due와 according 뒤에는 언제나 to가 와요.

"Why was the flight delayed?"

"Apparently it was due to a technical issue with the plane."

"That's frustrating. Did they say anything else?"

"Just that, according to the airline, it should leave within the hour, despite the delay."
