She is both talented and hard-working. He speaks neither French nor Spanish.
“재능도 있고 성실하기도 해요”, “둘 다”는 both … and, “차나 커피 중 하나”는 either … or, “A뿐만 아니라 B도”는 not only … but also예요. 중요한 건 짝을 맞추는 거예요. both는 and와, either는 or와, neither는 nor와 함께 써요.
영어 neither … nor에는 이미 부정이 들어 있어서 doesn't를 더하면 안 돼요: “He speaks neither French nor Spanish.” doesn't를 쓰고 싶다면 짝을 either … or로 바꿔요: “He doesn't speak either French or Spanish.”
각 단어는 이어 주는 부분 바로 앞에 두세요: “We can go either by train or by bus.” but also는 한 덩어리로 두 번째 동사 앞에 와요: “She not only sings but also plays the piano.”(but plays also가 아니에요). whether … or(“-든 -든”, “-인지 아닌지”)도 마찬가지예요. whether는 항상 or와 쓰고 and와는 쓰지 않아요: “whether the express or the local”, “whether it rains or not”.
“고양이도 개들도 밥을 못 먹었어요”는 가까운 주어 the dogs가 복수라서 “Neither the cat nor the dogs were fed.” 격식 있는 영어에서는 두 주어가 모두 단수면 단수 동사를 써요: “Neither the flight nor the hotel was refundable.” 반면 both … and는 항상 복수 주어가 돼요: “Both the manager and the team agree.”
either는 or와 짝이에요.
not only가 문장 맨 앞에 오면 조동사 도치가 필요해요(did she win).
영어는 부정을 겹치지 않아요. neither … nor 자체가 부정이라서 “He doesn't speak neither French nor Spanish”는 틀려요. “He speaks neither French nor Spanish.” 또는 doesn't를 살려서 “He doesn't speak either French or Spanish.”
학교에서 “A뿐만 아니라 B도” = not only A but also B로 배워요
어순도 같아서 문장 안에서는 쉽게 쓸 수 있어요: “She not only finished first but also broke the record.” 그런데 강조하려고 not only를 문장 맨 앞에 두면 의문문처럼 조동사가 주어 앞에 와야 해요: “Not only did she finish first, but she also broke the record.” “Not only she finished first”는 틀려요.
영어는 either … or, neither … nor에서 동사를 가까운 주어에 맞춰요: “Neither the cat nor the dogs were fed”, “Either the players or the coach is responsible.”
영어로는 whether … or예요: “whether the express or the local”, “whether it rains or not”. 한국어 “-든 -든”에는 and도 or도 보이지 않지만, whether의 짝은 언제나 or예요. and를 쓰면 틀려요.
💡 “A도 B도 아니다/안 …” = neither A nor B, doesn't 없이: He speaks neither French nor Spanish.
💡 짝을 맞추세요: both–and, either–or, neither–nor, whether–or.
💡 not only가 맨 앞에 오나요? Not only did she …
💡 either … or, neither … nor는 가까운 주어에 동사를 맞추고, both … and는 항상 복수예요.
"What should we serve — pasta or a salad?"
"Let's do both — a pasta dish and a salad."
"Good idea. And for dessert, either cake or fruit."
"Neither one is wrong — let's just get both and let people choose."
