I saved money to buy a car. I saved money, so I bought a car.

  • to, in order to, so as to + 동사원형은 행동의 목적을 나타내요.
  • so as not to, in order not to는 “-지 않으려고”, “-지 않도록”처럼 목적을 부정해요
  • so that + 주어 + can/could/would는 목적에 따로 주어가 있을 때 써요.

"I saved money to buy a car.
"I saved money, so I bought a car.

to / in order to / so as to

세 가지 모두 동사원형과 함께 쓰고 “-려고”, “-기 위해”라는 뜻이에요. in order to와 so as to는 조금 더 격식 있게 들려요. 앞에 쉼표는 찍지 않아요: “I saved money to buy a car.”

“위해”를 for로 외워 두면 “I saved money for buy a car”나 “for to buy a car”처럼 말하기 쉬운데, 둘 다 틀려요. “우유를 사러 가게에 갔어요”의 “-러”도 마찬가지로 “I went to the store to buy milk.” “for buying milk”라고 하지 않아요.

“-지 않으려고”, “-지 않도록”도 “for not to”가 아니라 so as not to나 in order not to예요. “in order to not”은 대화에서 들리기도 하지만, as를 뺀 “so not to”는 틀려요.

"She whispered so as not to wake the baby."
"We arrived early in order to get good seats."

so that + 주어 + can/could/would

지금이나 앞으로의 일이면 can/will, 과거 이야기면 could/would예요.

하지만 과거 문장이니까 “She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand.” 또 “-도록”을 “위해”처럼 for로 옮겨서 “for everyone could understand”라고 하면 틀려요. for 뒤에는 주어 + 동사가 오지 않아요. (for를 쓰려면 “for everyone to understand”처럼 to부정사로 바꿔요.)

so that과 so를 헷갈리지 마세요. “그래서”(결과)는 쉼표 + so예요(“It was raining, so we took an umbrella.”).

"He studied hard so that he could pass the exam."
"She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand."

for + -ing: 물건의 쓰임

기억하세요. for 뒤에는 동사원형이 오지 않아요. for + -ing나 명사(“for carrying”, “for souvenirs”), 아니면 to + 동사원형(“to carry”)이에요.

"This bag is for carrying groceries."
"I bought a bag to carry my groceries home.

"He left work early to catch his flight."
"We whispered so as not to disturb the neighbors."
"She saved her notes so that she could review them later."
"This knife is for cutting bread."

✗I saved money for buy a car.
✓I saved money to buy a car.

“사기 위해”는 to + 동사원형이에요. for 뒤에는 명사(for a car)나, 물건의 쓰임을 말할 때 -ing가 오고, 동사원형은 오지 않아요.

✗I went to the store for to buy milk.
✓I went to the store to buy milk.

✗She whispered so not to wake the baby.
✓She whispered so as not to wake the baby.

“깨우지 않으려고”의 부정형은 so as not to(또는 in order not to)예요. as를 빠뜨리면 안 돼요.

✗She spoke slowly for everyone could understand.
✓She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand.

✗He studied hard so that he can pass last week's exam.
✓He studied hard so that he could pass last week's exam.

“-도록”에는 시제가 없지만, 영어에서는 모든 일이 과거라면 so that 뒤에 can, will이 아니라 could, would를 써요.

✗I went to the store for buying milk.
✓I went to the store to buy milk.

for + -ing는 물건의 쓰임(for carrying groceries)을 말할 때 써요.

영어로는 모두 to + 동사원형이에요: “I saved money to buy a car.”, “I went to the store to buy milk.” “위해”를 for로 옮겨서 “for buy”, “for to buy”, “for buying”이라고 하지 마세요. 조금 더 격식 있게 말하려면 in order to를 써요: “We arrived early in order to get good seats.”

영어로는 so as not to나 in order not to예요: “She whispered so as not to wake the baby.” “for not to”나 as가 빠진 “so not to”는 틀려요.

영어 so that 뒤에는 보통 조동사가 오고, 주절이 과거면 could/would를 써요: “She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand.”

영어로는 for + -ing예요: “This knife is for cutting bread.”, “This bag is for carrying groceries.” for 뒤에 동사원형을 쓴 “for cut”, “for carry”는 틀려요.

💡 “-려고”, “-기 위해”, “-러” → to + 동사원형. for buy, for to buy는 틀려요.

💡 “-지 않으려고” → so as not to. “-도록” → so that + can/could/will/would.

💡 for 뒤에는 동사원형이 오지 않아요: for carrying, 하지만 to carry.

"Why are you bringing an extra bag?"

"So that I have room for souvenirs — I always buy too many."

"Smart. I brought a smaller one just to carry snacks."

"That works too, as long as you packed light so as not to go over the weight limit."
