(Vague Language)

Some stuff. Or something. Around thirty, give or take.

  • あいまいなリストの締めくくりは、まだ続きがあることを示します:and stuff like that、and so on、or something
  • 数や時刻をぼかす表現:around、about、or so、-ish、give or take

"I need to buy some stuff for the trip."
"There were like twenty people there, or so."

“some stuff”、“a lot of stuff” と言い、“stuffs” や “a stuff” とは言いません。

"He's got a new gadget, a thingy for charging his phone wirelessly."
"What's-his-name called earlier — you know, the guy from accounting."

“And stuff like that” や “and so on” は「〜とか」「〜など」にあたり、リストがまだ続くけれど言う必要はない、という合図です。 “and so on” や “etc.” 1つだけなら、くだけた会話では “I like sports and stuff (like that).” はおもに書き言葉で、会話では “and stuff like that” や “and things like that” のほうが自然です。

数や時刻をぼかすには around、about、or so、-ish、give or take(「〜くらい」「約」「〜ごろ」「多少の前後はあるけど」)を使います。 「約20人」なら “about twenty people” や “twenty or so people” です。

物や行動のあとは “or something”(“pizza or something”、“go for a walk or something”)、数や時間のあとは “or so”(“fifteen or so”、“an hour or so”)です。

"We need pens, paper, and stuff like that."
"It's around 30 dollars, give or take."
"I'll be there at 7-ish."

注意

✗The delivery will arrive sometime soon-ish, give or take, with some stuff included. (in a formal shipping contract)
✓The delivery will arrive on March 15th, containing the items listed in Appendix A.

✗Assuming a speaker who says 'stuff' or 'or something' doesn't know precise English.
✓Vague language is a deliberate, normal choice in casual conversation, not a sign of limited vocabulary.

✗I need to buy some staff for the trip.
✓I need to buy some stuff for the trip.

✗I need to buy some stuffs for the trip.
✓I need to buy some stuff for the trip.

There were almost twenty people at the party.
✓There were twenty or so people at the party.

「20人くらい」の意味なら about twenty か twenty or so です。

✗We could get pizza or so.
✓We could get pizza or something.

or so は数や時間のあとに使います:fifteen or so、an hour or so。

ほとんどに英語の相手がいます:「いろいろ(なもの)」→ stuff、「あれ」「なんとかいうやつ」→ thing / thingy、「なんとかさん」→ what's-his-name、「〜とか、そういうの」→ and stuff like that、「〜くらい」「約」→ around / about、「多少の前後はあるけど」→ give or take、つなぎの「なんか」→ like。区別が必要なのは1つだけ:数や時刻のあとは “or so”(“ten minutes or so”)、物や行動のあとは “or something”(“Let's get pizza or something”)です。

カタカナの「スタッフ」は、stuff(もの)と staff(職員)の両方を表してしまいます

英語では stuff(もの、いろいろ)と staff(職員、スタッフ)はまったく別の単語です。“I need to buy some stuff” が「いろいろ買わなきゃ」です。さらに、stuff は不可算名詞なので -s も a も付けません:“some stuff”、“a lot of stuff”。数えたいときは things を使います:“I need to buy a few things for the trip.”

や I'm afraid…

💡 「いろいろなもの」は some stuff(-s なし、staff ではない)、数えるなら a few things。

💡 「20人くらい」→ about twenty、twenty or so。「7時ごろ」→ around 7、7-ish。

💡 or so は数や時間のあと、or something は物や行動のあと。

"What do we need to bring?"

"Just snacks, drinks, and stuff like that — nothing fancy."

"How many people are coming, roughly?"

"Maybe fifteen or so, give or take a few."
