代用表現 one/ones・do・so(Substitution)

I'll take the red one, not the green one. I think so.

  • so は think、believe、hope、expect、guess、suppose の後で節全体の代わりになり、not はその否定です:「そう思います」= “I think so”、「そうでないといいですね」= “I hope not”

英語の one はまさにこの「の」です:“I'll take the red one, not the green one.”

"I'll take the red one, not the green one.(one = apple のこと)"

ふつうは前に形容詞や、this/that/which のような「どれか」を示す語がつきます:“This jacket or that one?” “These shoes are nicer than the old ones.”

“I have ones” とは言いません。ones の前には必ず語が必要です(the old ones、the red ones、which ones)。

these/those の後では、名詞をそのまま省いてかまいません:“These shoes are nicer than those.” those は複数で one は単数なので、“those one” は間違いです。“these ones/those ones” はくだけたイギリス英語では聞かれますが、ていねいな英語では those だけで十分です。

"This jacket or that one?"
"These shoes are nicer than the old ones."

特に比較や、so does she / so did I のような短い同意の返事でよく使います。「私はリサイクルしていて、隣の人もです」の「です」につられて is を使いがちですが、recycle は一般動詞なので be動詞ではなく does です:“I recycle, and my neighbor does too.”

so + do の形では、助動詞が主語の前に来ます:“She passed the exam, and so did I.” 疑問文(Did you…?)と同じ語順で、so does she が正しく、so she does ではありません。また、文の中の「私も合格した」を “and me too” とは言わず、“and so did I”(または “and I did too”)と言います。 “Me too.”)。

“I like jazz, and my neighbor does it too” ではなく “my neighbor does too” です。do so はかたい言い方で、短い返事や比較(the way I did)では did だけで十分です。

"I recycle, and my neighbor does too."
"She passed the exam, and so did I."

think、believe、hope、expect、guess、suppose の後(そして I'm afraid の後)では、so が繰り返しになる節全体の代わりになり、否定では not が代わりになります。これは日本語の「そう」ととても近く、「そう思います」= “I think so”、「そうだといいですね」= “I hope so”、「そうだと思います」= “I believe so”、「残念ながらそうです」= “I'm afraid so” です。“I think it” や “I hope it” とはしません。

hope と I'm afraid では not を使います。「来ないといいな」は “I hope not”、「残念ながら違います」は “I'm afraid not” です。日本語の「〜ないといい」を “I don't hope so” と訳すのは間違いで、“I'm afraid it not” も言いません。

""Is it raining?" "I believe so.""
""Will she come?" "I hope not.""

"The black one or the silver one?"
"He works hard, and so does she."
"I'm afraid not."
"I didn't finish the report, but she did."

注意

✗I'll take the blue.
✓I'll take the blue one.

one(複数なら ones)をつけましょう。

✗Do you have any stamps? — Yes, I have ones.
✓Do you have any stamps? — Yes, I have some.

形容詞のない ones は使えないので、複数なら some、単数なら one(Yes, I have one.)です。

✗These shoes are nicer than those one.
✓These shoes are nicer than those.

these/those の後は名詞なしで十分です。

✗I prefer Italian coffee to French one.
✓I prefer Italian coffee to French coffee.

✗I recycle, and my neighbor is too.
✓I recycle, and my neighbor does too.

✗She passed the exam, and me too.
✓She passed the exam, and so did I.

文の中では so did I(または and I did too)と、助動詞を主語の前に置きます。“Me too.”

✗I like jazz, and my neighbor does it too.
✓I like jazz, and my neighbor does too.

like、know、want のような状態を表す動詞では does it は使えません。

✗I don't hope so.
✓I hope not.

✗I'm afraid it not.
✓I'm afraid not.

短い否定の返事は、I'm afraid や I hope の後に not を置くだけです。

は “the big one or the small one?”

日本語の「そう」は英語の so とよく似ています:“I think so”、“I hope so”、“I don't think so”。 「来ないといいな」「そうじゃないといいね」は “I don't hope so” ではなく “I hope not” です。

一般動詞なら do/does/did、be動詞なら am/is/are を使います:“I recycle, and my neighbor does too.”(is ではありません)。

💡 「赤いの」「青にします」→ the red one / I'll take the blue one。

💡 「そう思う」→ I think so、「そうだといいな」→ I hope so、「〜ないといいな」→ I hope not(I don't hope so ではありません)。

💡 「私も(合格した)」→ and so did I。

"Which bag do you want — the big one or the small one?"

"The small one, I think. Do you have it in blue?"

"I believe so — let me check."

"Great, thanks."
