命令・依頼の間接話法(told me to / asked me to)

"Sit down!" he said. → He told me to sit down.

  • 否定は tell/ask+人+not to+動詞(don't は使いません)。
  • 指示や命令には tell/order、ていねいな依頼には ask/request を使います
  • “Could you...?”

命令文(“Sit down!”)やていねいな依頼(“Could you help me?”)

「彼は私に座るように言いました」→ “He told me to sit down.”、「彼女は私に手伝ってと頼みました」→ “She asked me to help her.”

また、日本語では「私に」を省略することが多いですが、英語の tell は相手を必ず入れます:“He told me to sit down.”(“He told to sit down” は間違い)。

“your” はよく “my” になり(“Finish your homework!” → “He told me to finish my homework”)、“me” は “her” になります(“Could you help me?” → “She asked me to help her”)。 は “He told me to wait there.” になります。

""Sit down!" he said. → He told me to sit down."
""Could you help me?" she said. → She asked me to help her."

否定の命令文は、to のすぐ前に not を置きます:not to touch, not to shout.

「触らないように言われた」の「ないように」が、そのまま not to にあたります:“She told me not to touch that.” don't を残して “She told him don't be late” としたり、not だけにして “not touch” としたりしないようにしましょう。

""Don't touch that!" → She told me not to touch that."
""Please don't shout." → She asked me not to shout."

何かをしてほしいと頼むなら ask+人+to(“She asked me to close the window”)、情報をたずねるなら ask+if や疑問詞(“She asked me if I was cold”)です。

“I was said to …” 同じように「〜するように頼まれた」は “I was asked to …” です。

"A boss shouting "Get out!" → He ordered me to get out."
"A polite "Could you close the window?" → She asked me to close the window."

"He told us to turn off the lights before leaving."
"She asked me not to wait for her."
"The officer ordered them to stop."
"He asked her to pass the salt."

注意

✗He said me to sit down.
✓He told me to sit down.

✗I was said to finish my homework.
✓I was told to finish my homework.

「〜するように言われた」は I was told to です。

✗He told to sit down.
✓He told me to sit down.

✗He told me that I sit down.
✓He told me to sit down.

✗She told him don't be late.
✓She told him not to be late.

「遅れないように」= not to be late.

✗She told me not touch that.
✓She told me not to touch that.

✗She asked me help her.
✓She asked me to help her.

英語では「ように」の部分が to+動詞、「ないように」が not to+動詞になります:“He told me to sit down.”, “She asked me to help her.”, “He told us not to wait.”

say のすぐあとに人は置けないので “said me to” は間違いで、tell の相手も省略できません:“He told me to sit down.” ask も同じで、人を入れずに “He asked to close the door” とすると「自分が閉めていいか聞いた」という意味になります。

英語の受け身は “I was told to finish my homework.” です。“I was said to…” もちろん能動態で “The teacher told me to finish my homework.” 「頼まれた」は “I was asked to…”

英語の “Could you...?” も同じで、伝えるときは質問ではなく ask+人+to の依頼にします:“Could you pass the salt?” → “He asked her to pass the salt.” → “He asked me to close the door.”

💡 「〜ように言った」= told+人+to、「〜ないように言った」= told+人+not to。

💡 「〜するように言われた」= I was told to。I was said to

"What did the teacher say?"

"She told us to finish the reading by Friday and asked us not to forget our notebooks."

"Anything else?"

"Yeah, she asked me to remind everyone about the test."
