(Phrasal Verbs)

ネイティブは日常会話で get up, call back, hand in と言います。

  • 朝の習慣:get up, wake up, put on your clothes(put on には目的語が必要), go out
  • 電話:call back, hang up, pick up, hold on
  • 旅行:check in, set off, take off, get on / get off
  • 勉強と仕事:hand in, look up, write down, cross out

I got up, put on my clothes, and went out."
She picked up, we talked, then I hung up."

wake up は「目が覚める」、get up は「ベッドから起き上がる」です。“I woke up at six but didn't get up until seven.” 「急いでコートを着た」は “He put on his coat quickly” で、wore ではありません。

"I woke up at six but didn't get up until seven."
"He put on his coat quickly and went out the door."

電話

この4つがあれば、ほとんどの電話の流れを説明できます:hold on(切らずに待つ、「少々お待ちください」)、pick up(電話に出る)、call back(かけ直す、折り返す)、hang up(電話を切る)。

「折り返し電話します」は call back で、代名詞は間に入れます:“I'll call you back”(“I'll call back you” ではありません)。

"Can you hold on a second?"
"She picked up on the third ring."
"I'll call you back after lunch."
"He hung up without saying goodbye."

旅行

出発から離陸まで、旅行で使う句動詞です:set off(出発する)、check in(チェックインする、搭乗手続きをする)、take off(離陸する)、get on / get off(乗る/降りる)。

バス、電車、飛行機、自転車は get on / get off、車やタクシーのように身をかがめて乗るものは get in / get out of です。“get off the car” や “get down from the bus” とは言いません。

"We set off early to beat the traffic."
"Please check in at least two hours before the flight."
"The plane took off right on time."
"Get on the bus at the next stop."

宿題やレポート、職場や教室での日常の作業に使うグループです:hand in(提出する)、look up(辞書やネットで調べる)、write down(書き留める、メモする)、cross out(線を引いて消す)。

"Hand in your essay by Friday."
"Look up any word you don't know."
"Write down the main points."
"Cross out any mistakes neatly."

多くの句動詞には、ラテン語系の1語の同義語があります:put off / postpone, look into / investigate, find out / discover, get back / return。

でも友だちとの会話なら、put off(または push back)のほうが自然です。 は look after my cat(または take care of)です。

"Can we put off the meeting?
"Could we postpone the meeting?

"I got up late, so I had to rush to catch the bus."
"Hold on, I'm just picking up another call."
"We checked in online the night before the flight."
"Don't forget to hand in your permission slip tomorrow."

注意

✗He cut the phone without saying goodbye.
✓He hung up without saying goodbye.

✗I'll call back you after lunch.
✓I'll call you back after lunch.

代名詞(you, him, her, it)は call と back の間に入れます。

✗He wore his coat quickly and went out.
✓He put on his coat quickly and went out.

I need to postpone our coffee tomorrow.
✓I need to put off our coffee tomorrow. / Can we push our coffee back?

✗Please check in your homework by Friday.
✓Please hand in your homework by Friday.

✗I get down from the bus at the next stop.
✓I get off the bus at the next stop.

Can you keep my cat this weekend?
✓Can you look after my cat this weekend?

ペットや子どもを一時的に「預かる」「世話をする」は look after(または take care of)です。

wake up=目が覚める、get up=ベッドから出る:“I woke up at six but didn't get up until seven.” put on=身に着ける動作、wear=着ている状態:“He put on his coat quickly.” “She is wearing a red coat.”

友だちとの会話なら “Can we put off the meeting?”、“I'll look into it”、“I found out yesterday”、“When did you get back?”

バス、電車、飛行機、自転車は “get on the bus”、“get off the train”。車やタクシーは “get in the car”、“get out of the taxi”。“get down from the bus” や “get off the car” は不自然です。

「電話を切る」は hang up:“He hung up without saying goodbye.” 「折り返し電話する」は call back で、代名詞は間に入れます:“I'll call you back after lunch.” 「出る」は pick up、「切らずに待つ」は hold on です。

💡 単語帳で覚えた硬い動詞(submit, investigate, postpone)は、会話では句動詞(hand in, look into, put off)に置き換えてみましょう。

💡 「起きる」は wake up(目が覚める)と get up(起き上がる)、「着る」は put on(動作)と wear(状態)を使い分けます。

💡 バス・電車から乗る/降りる= get on / get off、車から= get in / get out of。

💡 「電話を切る」= hang up、「折り返す」= call you back、「調べる」= look up、「メモする」= write down。

"What time do you usually get up?"

"Around six thirty — I like to get dressed and go out for a run before work."

"Wow, early! I can barely hang up the phone and get out the door by eight."

"Ha! Well, tomorrow I have to check in for a flight at five, so it'll be even earlier."
