There is / there are

A1 · PrincipianteStruttura della frase e proposizioni

There is a table in the room. There are three chairs.

  • There is corrisponde a «c'è», there are a «ci sono»: dicono che qualcosa esiste o si trova in un posto
  • is con un sostantivo singolare o non numerabile, are con un plurale (There is a book. / There are books.): decide il sostantivo che viene dopo
  • Al passato: there was / there were («c'era», «c'erano», ma anche «c'è stato», «ci sono stati»)
  • Domande e negazioni come con be: Is there...? / There isn't any..., senza intonazione all'italiana e senza doppia negazione

There come soggetto «vuoto»

There is/are dice che qualcosa esiste o si trova da qualche parte. L'informazione importante è il sostantivo che viene dopo is/are.

There is a table in the room.» Ricorda solo che in inglese il soggetto non si può mai togliere: niente «Is a problem…» o «Was a storm…». Per dire che qualcosa esiste si usa sempre there + be.

"There is a table in the room."
"There are three chairs here."

Is o are?

«La gente» è singolare, ma people è plurale: «C'era molta gente» → «There were a lot of people.» There is a lot of information.» (Nel parlato informale sentirai anche there's con il plurale, come «there's two chairs», ma in un inglese curato e in questa lezione con il plurale si usa are.)

"There is water in the bottle."
"There are many people at the concert."

Passato, negazione e domande

There funziona come qualsiasi soggetto con be: was/were per il passato, isn't/aren't/wasn't/weren't per la negazione e, nelle domande, is/are/was/were va prima di there. Is there a bank nearby?»

Due trappole italiane. Al passato diciamo spesso «C'è stato un temporale ieri sera», ma con un momento finito (ieri, la settimana scorsa) l'inglese vuole il past simple: «There was a storm last night», non «There has been». E nella negazione non si ripete il negativo: «Non c'è più latte» → «There isn't any milk left», «Non c'è nessun posto» → «There aren't any seats», non «There aren't no seats».

"There was a storm last night."
"There isn't any milk left."
"Is there a bank nearby?"

Esempi di inglese reale

"There's a problem with the printer."
"There were a lot of people there."
"Are there any tickets left?"
"There aren't any seats left."

Attenzione

✗There was many people at the concert.
✓There were many people at the concert.

«C'era molta gente»: gente è singolare in italiano, ma people è plurale in inglese, quindi were.

✗There are many informations on the website.
✓There is a lot of information on the website.

«Informazioni» è plurale, ma information è non numerabile: niente -s e verbo al singolare (is).

✗There has been a storm last night.
✓There was a storm last night.

«C'è stato un temporale ieri sera»: con last night, yesterday e simili serve il past simple, non il present perfect.

✗There is a problem?
✓Is there a problem?

In italiano basta l'intonazione («C'è un problema?»); in inglese is va prima di there.

✗There aren't no seats left.
✓There aren't any seats left.

«Non c'è nessun posto» ha due negativi, ma in inglese ne basta uno: aren't any oppure are no.

✗Exist many types of coffee.
✓There are many types of coffee.

«Esistono molti tipi di caffè» non si traduce parola per parola: per presentare qualcosa si usa there are.

Confronto con la tua lingua

«C'era molta gente», «Ci sono molte informazioni», «Ci sono pochi soldi»: in italiano gente è singolare, informazioni e soldi sono plurali

In inglese è il contrario: people è plurale («There were a lot of people there.»), mentre information, advice, news e money sono non numerabili e vanno con is/was: «There is a lot of information», «There isn't much money».

Con un momento finito del passato (last night, yesterday, in 2020) l'inglese usa il past simple: «There was a storm last night.», «There were many people at the concert.» There has been / there have been si usa solo senza un momento finito, per esempio «There have been a lot of problems recently».

«C'è un problema?» / «Non c'è nessun posto» / «Non c'è più latte»

La domanda si fa invertendo, non con l'intonazione: «Is there a problem?», «Are there any tickets left?». Nella negazione basta un solo negativo: «There aren't any seats left.» oppure «There are no seats left.», mai «There aren't no seats».

«Esistono molti tipi di caffè», «Mancano due sedie»: in italiano il verbo può venire prima del soggetto

In inglese il soggetto deve stare prima del verbo, quindi per presentare qualcosa di nuovo si usa there + be: «There are many types of coffee», non «Exist many types of coffee». Se invece parli di una cosa precisa e già nota, usa be senza there: «La banca è qui vicino» → «The bank is nearby.»

💡 «C'è» = there is, «ci sono» = there are: sempre con there, mai «Is a…» senza soggetto.

💡 Guarda il sostantivo DOPO is/are: people è plurale (were), information e money sono non numerabili (is).

💡 Con last night o yesterday: there was / there were, non there has been.

💡 Per fare una domanda inverti: Is there...? / Are there...? E nella negazione un solo negativo.

Situazione reale: chiedere un tavolo al ristorante

"Are there any tables free right now?"

"Let me check... yes, there are two by the window."

"Is there a wait for a bigger table?"

"There's a short one, about ten minutes."
