Less e least

B1 · IntermedioGli aggettivi

Less e least funzionano come more e most, ma verso il basso: less expensive significa «meno caro», non «economico».

Che cosa imparerai

  • Less + aggettivo + than: confrontare due cose verso il basso (less expensive than = meno caro di)
  • The least + aggettivo: il grado più basso in un gruppo (the least expensive = il meno caro)
  • Less/least vanno di solito con aggettivi lunghi e participi (less expensive, less qualified); con molti aggettivi brevi suona più naturale not as … as o il comparativo opposto (not as tall / shorter invece di less tall), anche se alcuni brevi compaiono con less nel contesto giusto (less shy). Niente desinenze

«This laptop is less expensive than that one» significa «Questo portatile è meno caro di quello»: può restare caro, solo non così tanto.

Il «di» (o il «che») del confronto è sempre than, mai of, that o as: «meno caro di» = less expensive than. E attenzione all'ortografia: than (nei confronti), non then (poi, allora).

"This laptop is less expensive than that one."
"This is the least expensive laptop in the store."

«Of all the candidates, he was the least qualified» significa che tutti gli altri candidati erano più preparati di lui.

«Il libro meno interessante dei tre» è «the least interesting book of the three», non «the less interesting».

Con esattamente due cose, l'inglese curato usa di solito il comparativo: the less expensive of the two.

"Of all the candidates, he was the least qualified."
"This is the least interesting book of the three."

Less o fewer?

"This phone has fewer features but is much less expensive."
"He has fewer friends than his brother."

Esempi di inglese reale

"This route is less scenic, but it's a lot faster."
"She's the least experienced person on the team, but she's a fast learner."
"I've been feeling less stressed since I started exercising."
"Of the two apartments, this one is definitely the less expensive."

Attenzione

✗This phone has less features.
✓This phone has fewer features.

Features è numerabile e plurale, quindi fewer.

✗Of all the candidates, he was the less qualified.
✓Of all the candidates, he was the least qualified.

In italiano basta l'articolo («il meno preparato»), ma in inglese il superlativo tra tre o più (all the candidates) vuole the least, non less.

✗This route is less dangerous of the other one.
✓This route is less dangerous than the other one.

«Meno pericolosa dell'altra»: il «di» del confronto in inglese è than, mai of.

✗This route is less dangerous that the other one.
✓This route is less dangerous than the other one.

Anche il «che» dei confronti è than, non that né as. E scrivi than, non then.

✗This route is lesser dangerous than the other one.
✓This route is less dangerous than the other one.

«Meno caro di» in italiano funziona esattamente come less expensive than

Fai solo attenzione a tradurre «di» e «che» con than, non con of, that o as: less expensive than, non «less expensive of» né «less expensive that».

This is the least interesting book of the three, non «the less interesting».

Sì → fewer; no → less.

💡 «Il meno…» in un gruppo = the least, non the less.

💡 Per confrontare due cose: less … than. Il «di/che» è than, non of, that o then.

Situazione reale: scegliere tra due portatili

"So which one are you going to get?"

"Probably this one — it's less powerful, but it's also way less expensive."

"Is that a big deal for what you need it for?"

"Not really — it's the least demanding thing I'll use it for anyway."
