Comparazioni con as...as

A2 · ElementareGli aggettivi

As + aggettivo + as significa «(così) … come» (My brother is as tall as me) e non vuole il comparativo. Attenzione: in inglese gli as sono sempre due, e «come» qui non è like.

Che cosa imparerai

  • as + aggettivo + as: due cose sono uguali (as tall as = alto come, tanto alto quanto)
  • not as + aggettivo + as: la prima è meno (not as expensive as = non così caro come)
  • twice/three times/half as + aggettivo + as: multipli (il doppio, il triplo, la metà)
  • L'aggettivo resta nella forma base, senza -er né more; e «come» qui è as, non like

Confrontare senza il comparativo

Conosci già comparativi come taller e more expensive.

«My brother is as tall as me» significa che siamo alti uguali: «Mio fratello è alto come me». Attenzione: in italiano spesso basta una parola («alto come me»), mentre in inglese gli as sono sempre due, uno prima e uno dopo l'aggettivo. Non dire «tall as me» né «tall like me». E anche «così alto come» o «tanto alto quanto» diventano as tall as: «così» qui non è so e «come» non è like. Dopo il secondo as, nell'inglese di tutti i giorni si dice di solito me (as tall as me); as I am è più formale. Lo stesso schema funziona con gli avverbi («She runs as fast as her brother») e con le quantità: «tanti soldi quanti» è as much money as (con i non numerabili) e «tanti libri quanti» è as many books as (con i plurali), mai so much … like.

"My brother is as tall as me."
"This bag is as heavy as that one."

Not as...as: la prima cosa è meno

Con not davanti ad as...as, la frase significa «meno di», non «più di», come «non così … come» in italiano. «This coffee isn't as good as the one at the other cafe» significa che questo caffè è peggiore, non migliore.

Nella conversazione suona spesso più naturale di un comparativo con than: «It's not as expensive as I thought» si sente più di «It's less expensive than I thought». Nelle frasi negative esiste anche not so … as, ma oggi la forma normale è not as … as; nelle frasi affermative va bene solo as … as.

"This coffee isn't as good as the one at the other cafe."
"This restaurant isn't as expensive as the one downtown."

Confronti con i multipli

Per dire quante volte una cosa è più grande, più veloce o più cara, metti la parola del multiplo (twice, three times, half) subito prima di as: twice as fast as, half as expensive as, three times as big as.

Non tradurle parola per parola: «costa il doppio» diventa is twice as expensive as, non «the double expensive» né «double as expensive», e «pesa la metà» è half as heavy as. Si sente anche three times more expensive than (multiplo + comparativo + than), ma con twice va bene solo as … as: «due volte più veloce» è twice as fast, non «two times faster» né «twice faster». E non mescolare mai le due strutture («twice as faster than»).

"This car is twice as expensive as that one."
"My new phone is twice as fast as my old one."

Esempi di inglese reale

"This apartment isn't as big as our old one, but it's much cheaper."
"She's not as experienced as her colleague, but she learns fast."
"The flight was twice as expensive as I expected."
"It's not as complicated as it looks."

Attenzione

✗My brother is so tall like me.
✓My brother is as tall as me.

«Così alto come me» non si traduce parola per parola: «così» → as, «come» → as. Like non entra in questa struttura.

✗She runs fast as her brother.
✓She runs as fast as her brother.

In italiano basta «veloce come suo fratello», ma in inglese servono due as: as fast as.

✗He is as smart than his sister.
✓He is as smart as his sister.

Dopo as … va di nuovo as.

✗This road isn't as faster as the highway.
✓This road isn't as fast as the highway.

Dentro as … as va la forma base (fast), mai il comparativo (faster): «non veloce come l'autostrada» = not as fast as the highway.

✗This car is the double expensive than that one.
✓This car is twice as expensive as that one.

«Costa il doppio di quella» si dice twice as expensive as. In inglese non si mette «the double» davanti a un aggettivo.

Confronto con la tua lingua

In italiano si dice spesso solo «alto come me», con una parola sola dopo l'aggettivo

In inglese la struttura ha sempre due parti: as + aggettivo + as. «Alto come me» → as tall as me, non «tall as me» né «tall like me». Il primo as non si può togliere.

«Così alto come me», «tanto alto quanto me»: in italiano le due parti sono parole diverse

In inglese tutte e due le parti sono as: as tall as me. Non tradurre parola per parola: «so tall like me», «as tall like me» e «so tall as me» sono sbagliati.

In inglese è lo stesso, e la coppia è fissa: «più … di» → smarter than (comparativo + than) e «(così) … come» → as smart as (forma base + as). Incroci come «as smart than» o «smarter as» sono sbagliati.

In inglese la forma più naturale con i multipli è parola del multiplo + as + aggettivo + as: twice as expensive as, three times as big as, half as heavy as. «Il doppio» qui è twice, non «the double» né «double». E l'aggettivo resta nella forma base, senza -er né more.

💡 «(Così) … come» = as … as: sempre due as, senza so e senza like.

💡 «Di/che» → than (solo con il comparativo); «come/quanto» → as (in as … as).

💡 «Tanto/tanti … quanto/quanti» = as much / as many … as.

💡 «Il doppio / la metà» = twice / half as … as, con l'aggettivo nella forma base.

Situazione reale: confrontare due quartieri

"Is the new neighborhood as quiet as this one?"

"Pretty much — maybe not quite as quiet, but close."

"What about rent?"

"Honestly, it's almost twice as expensive as here."
