Amaç bildirmek

B1 · OrtaBağlaçlar ve bağlantı kelimeleri

I saved money to buy a car. I saved money, so I bought a car.

  • to, in order to ve so as to + yalın fiil bir eylemin amacını anlatır, tıpkı “-mek için” gibi
  • so as not to / in order not to, “-memek için” gibi olumsuz bir amaç bildirir

"I saved money to buy a car. (amaç: ileriye bakar)"
"I saved money, so I bought a car. (sonuç: geriye bakar)"

to / in order to / so as to

Üçü de fiilin yalın hâliyle kullanılır ve “-mek için” ile aynı anlama gelir; in order to ve so as to kulağa biraz daha resmî gelir. Türkçede “-mek için” yapısından önce virgül konmadığı gibi, burada da virgül yoktur: “I saved money to buy a car.”

Tuzak “için” kelimesindedir: onu for diye çevirme. “I saved money for buy a car” ve “for to buy a car” yanlıştır; yalnızca to kalır.

“-memek için” de “for not to” değildir; so as not to ya da in order not to denir. Özenli İngilizcede not, to'dan önce gelir: “in order to not” konuşmada duyulur, ama as olmadan “so not to” yanlıştır.

"She whispered so as not to wake the baby."
"We arrived early in order to get good seats."

so that + özne + can/could/would

→ “She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand.” in order to'dan sonra bir özne gelmez, bu yüzden “in order to everyone could understand” denmez. Türkçede “-ebilmek için” ya da “-ebilsin diye” yapısında zaman yoktur, ama İngilizcede temel cümle geçmişteyse genellikle could kullanılır: “He studied hard so that he could pass the exam.”

so that ile so'yu karıştırma: “bu yüzden” (sonuç) anlamındaki so virgülle gelir (“It was raining, so we took an umbrella.”); virgülsüz so that ise neredeyse her zaman “-sın diye, -mesi için” demektir.

"He studied hard so that he could pass the exam."
"She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand."

Unutma: for'dan sonra fiil hiçbir zaman yalın hâlde gelmez. Ya for + -ing / isim (“for carrying”, “for souvenirs”) ya da to + yalın fiil (“to carry”).

"This bag is for carrying groceries."
"I bought a bag to carry my groceries home. (somut bir eylem)"

Gerçek hayattan İngilizce örnekler

"He left work early to catch his flight."
"We whispered so as not to disturb the neighbors."
"She saved her notes so that she could review them later."
"This knife is for cutting bread."

Dikkat

✗I saved money for buy a car.
✓I saved money to buy a car.

“-mek için” → to + yalın fiil. for'dan sonra bir isim (for a car) ya da, bir şeyin ne işe yaradığını anlatıyorsan, -ing biçimi gelir; yalın fiil asla gelmez.

✗I went to the store for to buy milk.
✓I went to the store to buy milk.

“Süt almak için” → to buy milk. Buradaki “için” ayrıca çevrilmez; “for to” standart İngilizcede yoktur.

✗She whispered so not to wake the baby.
✓She whispered so as not to wake the baby.

“-memek için” → so as not to (ya da in order not to); as kelimesi eksik olmamalı.

✗She spoke slowly in order to everyone could understand.
✓She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand.

“Herkes anlayabilsin diye” cümlesinde amacın kendi öznesi var (everyone). in order to'dan sonra özne gelmez; bu durumda so that kullanılır.

✗He studied hard so that he can pass last week's exam.
✓He studied hard so that he could pass last week's exam.

“Geçebilmek için” zaman göstermez, ama İngilizcede her şey geçmişte olduysa so that'ten sonra can ya da will değil, could ya da would gelir.

✗This knife is for cut bread.
✓This knife is for cutting bread.

“İçin” burada for diye çevrilmez; yalnızca to + yalın fiil kalır: “I saved money to buy a car.” “For buy” ya da “for to buy” denmez. Daha resmî bir seçenek in order to'dur: “We arrived early in order to get good seats.”

İngilizcede so as not to ya da in order not to kullanılır: “She whispered so as not to wake the baby.” “For not to” ya da as olmadan “so not to” deme.

İngilizcede bunun karşılığı so that + özne + modal fiildir: “She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand.”

Amaç: to / in order to / so that (“He saved money to buy a car.”). Sebep: because (“He was happy because he bought a car.”). Sonuç: so (“I saved money, so I bought a car.”).

💡 “-mek için” → to + yalın fiil: for buy ya da for to buy asla değil.

💡 “-memek için” → so as not to. “-sın diye” → so that + can/could/will/would.

💡 for'dan sonra yalın fiil gelmez: for carrying ama to carry.

Gerçek hayatta: bavul hazırlamak

"Why are you bringing an extra bag?"

"So that I have room for souvenirs — I always buy too many."

"Smart. I brought a smaller one just to carry snacks."

"That works too, as long as you packed light so as not to go over the weight limit."
