Edatlar: AmE ve BrE

B1 · OrtaAmerikan ve İngiliz İngilizcesi

At the weekend mi, on the weekend mi?

  • İngiliz İngilizcesi “at the weekend”, Amerikan İngilizcesi “on the weekend” der; Türkçede “hafta sonunda” desen de “in the weekend” asla doğru değildir
  • İngiliz İngilizcesi “fill in a form”, Amerikan İngilizcesi “fill out a form” der; “form doldurmak” için “fill up” ya da yalnızca “fill” kullanılmaz
  • İngiliz İngilizcesi “Monday to Friday”, Amerikan İngilizcesi “Monday through Friday” der; “pazartesiden cumaya kadar” ifadesindeki “kadar” da burada until olmaz
  • İngiliz İngilizcesi “in a team”, Amerikan İngilizcesi “on a team” der
  • Saat: İngiliz İngilizcesi past ile söyler (five past ten), Amerikan İngilizcesi çoğu zaman after ile (five after ten), ama past orada da normaldir; İngilizcede dakika saatten önce gelir
  • “Different from” iki çeşitte de standarttır, tıpkı Türkçedeki “-den farklı” gibi; Amerikan İngilizcesinde “different than”, İngiliz İngilizcesinde “different to” da kullanılır

Bazen Türkçe bir çeşide benzer: “takımda oynamak” → play in the team (İngiliz), “-den farklı” → different from.

İngiliz İngilizcesi at the weekend ve Monday to Friday der; Amerikan İngilizcesi on the weekend ve Monday through Friday der (through, cumanın da dahil olduğunu açıkça gösterir). Türkçedeki “hafta sonunda” yapısından gelen “in the weekend” ise hiçbir çeşitte yoktur.

“Kadar” kelimesine dikkat: “pazartesiden cumaya kadar” gibi bir gün aralığı için to ya da through kullanılır, “Monday until Friday” denmez. Until bir bitiş anı içindir: “The shop is open until six.”

"İngiliz İngilizcesi: I'll see you at the weekend."
"Amerikan İngilizcesi: I'll see you on the weekend."
"İngiliz İngilizcesi: The store is open Monday to Saturday."
"Amerikan İngilizcesi: The store is open Monday through Saturday."

Fiil + edat ve takımlar

Bir formu “fill in” ya da “fill out” etmek, gündelik hayatta en sık karşılaşacağın farklardan biridir. Türkçede sadece “doldurmak” dersin, ama İngilizcede edat şarttır: “fill this form” eksik kalır.

“She studies in the university” ise Türkçeden birebir çeviridir ve iki çeşitte de yanlıştır.

"İngiliz İngilizcesi: Fill in your details here. / Amerikan İngilizcesi: Fill out your details here."
"İngiliz İngilizcesi: She plays in the national team. / Amerikan İngilizcesi: She plays on the national team."

Gerçek hayattan İngilizce örnekler

"British: Could you fill in this form and hand it back to me at the weekend?"
"American: Could you fill out this form and hand it back to me on the weekend?"
"British: The gym is open Monday to Friday, and she plays in the staff football team."
"American: The gym is open Monday through Friday, and she plays on the staff soccer team."

Dikkat

✗'On the weekend' is incorrect — it should always be 'at the weekend.'
✓Both are correct: 'at the weekend' is British, 'on the weekend' is American.

✗Please fill in out this form.
✓Please fill in this form. (British) OR Please fill out this form. (American)

İki edatı bir arada kullanmak bir orta yol değildir: çiftin tamamını tek bir çeşitten al.

✗It's ten past five. (meaning 10:05)
✓It's five past ten.

“Saat onu beş geçiyor” cümlesinde önce saat gelir. İngilizcede önce dakika gelir: five past ten (İngiliz), five after ten (Amerikan) ya da sadece ten oh five. “Ten past five” ise 5.10 demektir.

✗What are you doing in the weekend?
✓What are you doing at the weekend?

“Hafta sonunda” ifadesindeki -de eki in olmaz. İngiliz İngilizcesinde at the weekend, Amerikan İngilizcesinde on the weekend ya da sadece this weekend denir.

✗Please fill this form.
✓Please fill in this form.

Türkçede “Bu formu doldurun” cümlesinde fiil tek başınadır, ama İngilizcede edat gerekir: fill in (İngiliz) ya da fill out (Amerikan). Fill up ise ağzına kadar doldurmak demektir.

✗The office is open Monday until Friday.
✓The office is open Monday to Friday.

✗She studies in the university.
✓She's at university. (British) OR She's in college. (American)

“Üniversitede okuyor” cümlesini kelimesi kelimesine çevirme. Öğrenci olmaktan bahsederken İngiliz İngilizcesinde at university, Amerikan İngilizcesinde in college denir; ikisinde de artikel yoktur.

Türkçeyle karşılaştırma

Türkçede saat söylerken önce saat gelir: “Saat onu beş geçiyor”, “Ona çeyrek var”, “On buçuk”

İngilizcede önce dakika, sonra saat gelir: “five past ten” (Amerikan İngilizcesinde “five after ten” da), “a quarter to ten”, “half past ten”.

Burada Türkçe çoğunlukla İngiliz İngilizcesine benzer: “in the team”, “Monday to Friday”. Amerikan İngilizcesi “on the team” ve “Monday through Friday” der. “-den farklı” ise iki çeşitte de geçerli olan “different from” ile örtüşür: “different from what I expected”.

Türkçedeki -de eki seni in kullanmaya iter, ama weekend ile in kullanılmaz: İngiliz İngilizcesinde “at the weekend”, Amerikan İngilizcesinde “on the weekend”.

İngilizcede form için edatlı bir fiil gerekir: “fill in a form” (İngiliz) ya da “fill out a form” (Amerikan). “Fill up” ise bir şeyi ağzına kadar doldurmaktır: “fill up a glass”, “fill up the tank”. “Fill this form” ya da “fill up this form” demek, Türkçe konuşanların çok sık yaptığı bir hatadır.

💡 “Hafta sonu” → at the weekend (İngiliz) ya da on the weekend (Amerikan), asla in the weekend değil.

"The receptionist asked me to fill out this form, but I kept writing 'fill in' out of habit."

"Ha, that happens — it's the same form either way, just a different verb depending on where you are."

"Good to know. Anything else I should watch for while I'm here?"

"Just listen for 'on the weekend' instead of 'at the weekend' — that one trips people up too."
