Where, when e why (advérbios relativos)

B1 · IntermediárioOrações relativas

The city where I was born. The day when we met. The reason why she left.

  • “Why” substitui “for which” depois de “the reason”: “o motivo pelo qual” = “the reason why”

Where, when e why são relative adverbs (advérbios relativos).

O português também tem as duas opções: “a cidade na qual eu nasci” (≈ in which) e “a cidade onde eu nasci” (≈ where).

"The city where I was born has changed a lot."
"The city in which I was born has changed a lot."

Where: para lugares

Ele substitui “in which”, “at which” ou “on which”, e a preposição some completamente, exatamente como com “onde” em português: “the park where we used to play”, e não “…where we used to play in”.

"This is the restaurant where we had our first date."
"This is the office where I work."

When: para momentos

Ele substitui “in which”, “on which” ou “at which”.

Depois de um substantivo de tempo, use when: “the day when we met”, “the year when everything changed”.

“The day we met” é tão natural quanto “the day when we met”. Já a tradução palavra por palavra de “o dia em que” não funciona bem: “the day in which” soa muito pesado (e, com day, a preposição seria on).

"I remember the day when we met."
"2020 was the year when everything changed."

Why: para motivos

Use “why” depois de “the reason”. Ele substitui “for which” e soa bem mais natural. Não traduza “pelo qual” por because nem “o motivo de” por of: “the reason because she left” e “the reason of she left” estão errados.

Também é muito comum dizer “the reason that …” ou não usar palavra nenhuma: “the reason she left”.

"That's the reason why she left early."
"Do you know the reason why the flight was delayed?"

Inglês de verdade

"This is the park where we used to play."
"Summer is the season when I feel most productive."
"Nobody knows the reason why he quit."
"That's the house where I grew up."

Atenção

✗2020 was the year where everything changed.
✓2020 was the year when everything changed.

Where é para lugares.

✗I remember the day where we met.
✓I remember the day when we met.

“O dia em que a gente se conheceu” = the day when we met (ou simplesmente the day we met). Nunca the day where.

✗This is the office when I work.
✓This is the office where I work.

Para lugar, use where, não when: when é só para tempo.

✗This is the town why she was born.
✓This is the town where she was born.

Para lugar é where: why só se usa depois de “the reason”.

✗That's the reason because she left early.
✓That's the reason why she left early.

“O motivo pelo qual” não vira because. Depois de the reason, use why, that ou nada: the reason (why) she left.

✗Nobody knows the reason of he quit.
✓Nobody knows the reason why he quit.

“O motivo de ele ter saído” não vira “the reason of he quit”. (“The reason for” só vem antes de um substantivo: the reason for the delay.)

✗This is the park where we used to play in.
✓This is the park where we used to play.

Where já contém a preposição (= in which), igual a “onde” em português. Não misture as estruturas: “the park where we used to play”, “the park we used to play in” (sem where, a preposição vai para o fim) ou, mais formal, “the park in which we used to play”.

Depois de um substantivo de tempo, use when: “2020 was the year when everything changed.”, e não “the year where”.

A tradução literal “the city in which I was born” está correta, mas soa dura no dia a dia. Mais natural: “The city where I was born has changed a lot.”

That's the reason why she left early.” Evite “the reason because” e “the reason of”: depois de reason, use why, that ou nada.

💡 Lugar → where; tempo → when; motivo (depois de the reason) → why.

= the reason why…, nunca the reason because nem the reason of.

💡 Depois de where, nada de preposição extra: the house where I grew up.

Na vida real: relembrando os velhos tempos

"Do you remember the café where we used to study?"

"Of course — that was the year when we were both broke!"

"Ha, true. That's probably the reason why we studied there so much — it was cheap."
