Pronomes recíprocos: each other e one another

  • O que significam each other e one another e como expressam uma ação recíproca
  • Por que each other e one another são intercambiáveis no inglês atual, seja qual for o número de pessoas
  • Como formar o possessivo: each other's e one another's

A ideia básica

Each other e one another são pronomes recíprocos.

Each other e one another

Each other e one another expressam a mesma ideia recíproca e funcionam do mesmo jeito na frase: “The neighbors greet each other every morning.” “The neighbors greet one another every morning.” As duas frases significam exatamente a mesma coisa.

Eles vêm logo depois do verbo (know each other) ou depois de uma preposição (talk to one another, work with each other, care about one another). “Eles se falam” vem de “falar com alguém”, então em inglês é talk to each other, e não “talk each other”.

"The neighbors greet each other every morning."
"The neighbors greet one another every morning."

No inglês real de hoje, each other e one another se usam indistintamente, seja qual for o número de pessoas: “The two roommates split the bills with each other” e “The five roommates split the bills with each other” são igualmente naturais, e one another funcionaria tão bem quanto nas duas.

No dia a dia, each other é bem mais frequente; one another soa um pouco mais formal.

A forma possessiva: each other's / one another's

O possessivo se forma com apóstrofo + s: each other's, one another's. “The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam.” “The teams respect one another's effort.” Em português você diria “eles pegaram as anotações um do outro”; em inglês, basta each other's, antes do substantivo e sem of: nada de “the notes of each other”.

Each other's, não each others'.

"The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam."
"The teams respect one another's effort."

O inglês separa claramente as duas coisas.

Então é each other / one another.

"The two companies have worked with each other for over a decade."
"Please introduce yourselves to one another before the meeting starts."
"The kids in the carpool always sit next to each other."
"Long-distance couples make an effort to call one another every day."

Atenção

✗There are three of us on the project, so we have to say "one another" instead of "each other."
✓There are three of us on the project, and we help each other (or one another) whenever someone gets stuck.

A regra “each other = dois, one another = três ou mais” ainda aparece em alguns livros, mas no inglês atual é um mito: as duas formas são intercambiáveis, seja qual for o tamanho do grupo.

✗We always read each others' emails before sending a reply.
✓We always read each other's emails before sending a reply.

Por isso o apóstrofo vem logo antes do s: each other's, não each others'.

✗The committee members respect each others a lot.
✓The committee members respect each other a lot.

Other nunca leva -s nessa expressão, seja qual for o número de pessoas. Mesmo que o português diga “uns aos outros”, o inglês diz sempre each other.

✗The roommates always blame themselves when the kitchen is a mess.
✓The roommates always blame each other when the kitchen is a mess.

✗They have known themselves since school.
✓They have known each other since school.

(E com since se usa o present perfect, não o presente: nada de “They know each other since school”.)

✗My parents talk each other every evening.
✓My parents talk to each other every evening.

Em inglês se diz talk to someone, então talk to each other.

✗The two sisters help mutually.
✓The two sisters help each other.

Em inglês, each other já expressa a reciprocidade.

Se a ação vai nos dois sentidos, use each other: “They know each other”, “They love each other a lot”.

Em inglês, each other faz todo esse trabalho sozinho: “Eles se ajudam mutuamente” → “They help each other”, “Eles conversam entre si” → “They talk to each other”, “Eles olharam um para o outro” → “They looked at each other”. “They help mutually”, “They talk between them” ou “the one to the other” soam errados.

Alguns verbos ingleses já são recíprocos sozinhos: “We're meeting at eight”, “They got married”, “They met in Lyon”, “They kissed”, “They hugged”. Com kiss ou hug dá para acrescentar each other (“They hugged each other”), mas não é necessário. Um reflexivo palavra por palavra (“We see us”, “They married themselves”) não existe em inglês.

Aqui o inglês facilita sua vida: each other e one another nunca mudam. Duas irmãs, dois amigos ou um grupo de dez pessoas: sempre each other (ou one another). Nunca “each others” nem “ones another”.

→ each other. “A si mesmo”? → themselves, ourselves, yourselves.

💡 “Mutuamente”, “entre si”, “um ao outro”, “uns aos outros” → simplesmente each other.

💡 Mantenha a preposição do verbo inglês: talk to each other, write to each other (no inglês americano, também write each other), mas call each other.

💡 Each other nunca muda: nem gênero, nem plural, nunca “each others”.

Na vida real: organizando um presente coletivo

"Should we all chip in for Maria's going-away gift?"

"Good idea. Let's text each other how much everyone can give."

"I'll message the group. We can also ask one another for gift ideas — she'd love something practical."

"Perfect. Let's check in with each other by Friday so we can order it in time."
