Other, another e others

B1 · IntermediárioDeterminantes e quantificadores

Another, other e others correspondem a “outro”, “outros” e “os outros”.

  • Another: uma palavra só (an + other), com substantivo no singular ou sozinho; “outro café” = another coffee
  • Other: antes de substantivo no plural ou incontável (other books, other advice), sem -s
  • Others: sozinho, no plural, sem substantivo depois
  • The other(s): os que sobram num grupo definido e fechado, como “o outro” e “os outros”

Do que se trata?

Another, other e others indicam algo diferente ou adicional.

Another: outro, numa palavra só

“Can I have another cup of coffee?” — mais uma xícara, no singular.

“This shirt doesn't fit. Do you have another one?” — aqui another quer dizer “outra, diferente”; another também pode aparecer sozinho e substituir o substantivo.

"Can I have another cup of coffee?"
"This shirt doesn't fit. Do you have another one?"

Other + substantivo no plural / incontável

“Outras perguntas” é other questions, não “others questions”. Se já houver outro determinante antes (the, my, any, some, no), other também pode vir com substantivo no singular: the other day, some other time, any other question.

“Do you have any other questions?” — other antes do plural questions (“Você tem mais alguma pergunta?” / “Tem outras perguntas?”).

“I need some other advice.”

"Do you have any other questions?"
"I need some other advice."

Others: sozinho

“Some students like math; others prefer science.” — others substitui “other students”.

“I've read a few of his books, but not the others.”

"Some students like math; others prefer science."
"I've read a few of his books, but not the others."

The other(s): os que sobram, bem definidos

“I have two sisters. One lives in Kyiv, and the other lives in Lviv.” — se são exatamente duas, a segunda é “a outra”: the other, não another.

“There are five apples. I'll eat one now and save the others for later.” — the others são exatamente as quatro maçãs que sobram, “as outras”.

Atenção à concordância também aqui: “as outras maçãs” é the other apples, sem -s em other.

"I have two sisters. One lives in Kyiv, and the other lives in Lviv."
"There are five apples. I'll eat one now and save the others for later."

Inglês de verdade

"Would you like another cup of tea?"
"Some people work better in the morning; others focus better at night."
"I only found one of my keys — where's the other one?"
"Are there any other flights available today?"

Atenção

✗Can I have other coffee?
✓Can I have another coffee?

✗I need an other pen.
✓I need another pen.

Tradução direta de “um outro”. Another se escreve sempre numa palavra só, nunca an other.

✗Do you have any others questions?
✓Do you have any other questions?

✗The others students left early.
✓The other students left early.

Você pode dizer The other students left early, ou The others left early, sem substantivo.

✗I need another pens.
✓I need other pens.

“Outras canetas” não é another pens: another vai com singular, e antes de um plural comum se usa other. (Com número, pode: “another two pens” = “mais duas canetas”.)

✗I have two dogs. One is black, another is white.
✓I have two dogs. One is black, the other is white.

“Can I have other coffee?” está errado, e “an other” também não existe como equivalente de “um outro”: é sempre another, numa palavra só.

Em inglês, other antes de um substantivo não muda, como todo adjetivo inglês: “other people”, “other questions”, “the other students”, nunca “others people”. O -s só aparece quando others vem sozinho: “Some people like tea; others like coffee.”

Another funciona igualzinho: “Can I have another cup of coffee?” (mais uma) e “Do you have another one?” E “mais duas semanas” é “another two weeks”.

“O outro” e “os outros” funcionam quase como the other / the others

Onde o português põe artigo definido (“a outra irmã”, “as outras maçãs”), o inglês põe the: “the other”, “the others”. E “uns…, outros…” é “some…, others…”.

💡 Substantivo no singular → another (exceto depois de the, any, some…: the other day); no plural ou incontável → other; sem substantivo, no plural → others.

💡 Other nunca concorda antes de substantivo: “outras perguntas” = other questions.

💡 Use the quando falar dos que sobram, específicos e conhecidos (como “o outro”, “os outros”): the other(s).

Na vida real: no provador

"This one's too small. Do you have it in another size?"

"Let me check. We also have a few other colors, if you're interested."

"Sure, show me the others."

"Here you go — this is the last one, and here's the other option we have."
