Conjunções correlativas: both … and, either … or

B2 · Intermediário superiorConjunções e conectivos

She is both talented and hard-working. He speaks neither French nor Spanish.

  • Quando not only abre a frase, há inversão com um auxiliar (Not only did she …)

Se quiser usar doesn't, o par vira either … or: “He doesn't speak either French or Spanish.”

"She is both talented and hard-working."
"He speaks neither French nor Spanish."

A estrutura paralela

We can go either by train or by bus.” E but also forma um bloco antes do segundo verbo: “She not only sings but also plays the piano.” — não “but plays also”. O mesmo vale para whether … or (“seja … ou”, “quer … quer”): whether sempre vai com or, nunca com and: “whether the express or the local”, “whether it rains or not”.

“She not only enjoys reading but also writes”, e não “but also to write”.

"He not only writes novels but also directs films. (verbo + verbo)"
"She is not only a doctor but also a writer. (substantivo + substantivo)"

No inglês formal, dois sujeitos no singular pedem verbo no singular: “Neither the flight nor the hotel was refundable.” Na fala informal, o plural também aparece. Já both … and forma sempre um sujeito plural: “Both the manager and the team agree.”

"Neither the manager nor the employees were happy."
"Either the players or the coach is responsible."

Inglês de verdade

"Both the design and the price convinced me to buy it."
"You can either call me or send a message."
"Neither the flight nor the hotel was refundable."
"Not only did she finish first, but she also broke the record."

Atenção

✗She not only enjoys reading but also to write.
✓She not only enjoys reading but also writes.

✗She not only sings but plays also the piano.
✓She not only sings but also plays the piano.

But also é um bloco que fica antes do verbo, assim como “também” costuma vir antes do verbo em “ela também toca piano”.

✗You can have either tea and coffee.
✓You can have either tea or coffee.

Either vai com or, como “ou … ou”. Com and, a frase não faz sentido.

✗Neither the cat nor the dogs was fed.
✓Neither the cat nor the dogs were fed.

✗He doesn't speak neither French nor Spanish.
✓He speaks neither French nor Spanish.

✗She speaks both English as French.
✓She speaks both English and French.

“Tanto … quanto” é both … and (ou English as well as French, sem both). Both nunca vai com as.

✗Not only she won the race, but she also broke the record.
✓Not only did she win the race, but she also broke the record.

“He doesn't speak neither French nor Spanish” está errado. Diga “He speaks neither French nor Spanish” ou, com doesn't, “He doesn't speak either French or Spanish”.

“Ela fala tanto inglês quanto francês”: o “tanto … quanto / como” leva a pensar em as ou so much

O equivalente em inglês é both … and: “She speaks both English and French.” “Both English as French” e “so much English as French” estão errados, e “both English as well as French” é criticado pela maioria dos guias de uso. As well as é usado sozinho, sem both: “She speaks English as well as French.”

Mas, se a frase começa com not only, o inglês pede a ordem de pergunta, com auxiliar: “Not only did she finish first, but she also broke the record.” “Not only she finished first” está errado. Sem ênfase, é mais simples: “She not only finished first but also broke the record.”

No inglês formal, o verbo concorda com o sujeito mais próximo: “Neither the cat nor the dogs were fed”, mas “Either the players or the coach is responsible”.

💡 “Tanto … quanto” = both … and, não both … as.

💡 But also vem antes do verbo: but also plays, não but plays also.

💡 Not only no começo da frase? Ponha o auxiliar antes do sujeito: Not only did she …

💡 Com either … or / neither … nor, quem manda é o sujeito mais próximo; both … and é sempre plural.

Na vida real: montando um cardápio

"What should we serve — pasta or a salad?"

"Let's do both — a pasta dish and a salad."

"Good idea. And for dessert, either cake or fruit."

"Neither one is wrong — let's just get both and let people choose."
