Other, another i others (inny, jeszcze jeden)

B1 · Średnio zaawansowanyOkreślniki i kwantyfikatory

Another, other i others znaczą „inny” albo „jeszcze jeden”.

  • Another: jedno słowo (an + other), z rzeczownikiem policzalnym w liczbie pojedynczej albo samodzielnie
  • Other: przed rzeczownikiem w liczbie mnogiej lub niepoliczalnym (other books, other advice)
  • Others: stoi samo, liczba mnoga, bez rzeczownika
  • The other(s): „ten drugi”, „pozostali” – konkretne pozostałe z zamkniętej grupy

Najważniejsza idea

Another, other i others wskazują na coś innego albo dodatkowego. Another to dosłownie „an” + „other” sklejone w jedno słowo, więc łączy się tylko z liczbą pojedynczą (albo stoi samo). Other stoi przed rzeczownikiem w liczbie mnogiej lub niepoliczalnym. Others stoi zupełnie samo i zastępuje rzeczownik w liczbie mnogiej.

Another: jeszcze jeden, jedno słowo

Another łączy „an” i „other” w jedno słowo, dlatego stoi przy policzalnym rzeczowniku w liczbie pojedynczej. Znaczy „jeszcze jeden” albo „inny (jeden)”. Nie łączy się ze zwykłą liczbą mnogą (wyjątek to liczebnik: „another two weeks” = jeszcze dwa tygodnie) i nigdy nie piszesz go osobno jako „an other”.

„Can I have another cup of coffee?” – „Mogę prosić o jeszcze jedną kawę?”: liczba pojedyncza.

„This shirt doesn't fit. Do you have another one?”

Pułapka dla Polaka: „inny długopis” kusi, żeby powiedzieć „other pen”. Ale przed policzalnym rzeczownikiem w liczbie pojedynczej musi stać jakiś przedimek, a w another jest on już wbudowany: „another pen”.

"Can I have another cup of coffee?"
"This shirt doesn't fit. Do you have another one?"
"I need another pen."

Other + rzeczownik w liczbie mnogiej lub niepoliczalny

Other stawiasz przed rzeczownikiem w liczbie mnogiej albo niepoliczalnym, gdy mówisz o „innych, dodatkowych” rzeczach z otwartego, nieokreślonego zbioru.

„Do you have any other questions?” – „Masz jeszcze jakieś inne pytania?”: other przed questions.

„I need some other advice.” – other przed niepoliczalnym advice.

Mówisz „other questions”, „other people”, nigdy „others questions”.

"Do you have any other questions?"
"I need some other advice."
"Other people think differently."

Others: samodzielnie

„Some students like math; others prefer science.” – „Jedni uczniowie lubią matematykę, inni wolą przyrodę”: others zastępuje „other students”.

„I've read a few of his books, but not the others.” – tutaj the others to konkretne pozostałe książki.

Polskie „jedni…, inni…” to po angielsku „some…, others…”. Nie mów „ones like tea”: jedni = some.

"Some students like math; others prefer science."
"I've read a few of his books, but not the others."

The other(s): ten drugi, pozostali

„I have two sisters. One lives in Kyiv, and the other lives in Lviv.” – „Jedna…, a druga…”: the other to ta druga, jedyna pozostała siostra.

„There are five apples. I'll eat one now and save the others for later.” – the others to pozostałe cztery jabłka, „reszta”.

Polskie „jeden…, drugi…” to po angielsku „one…, the other…”, nie „one…, second…” i nie „one…, another…”. A „pozostali” lub „reszta” przy ludziach albo rzeczach to „the others” albo „the rest”.

"I have two sisters. One lives in Kyiv, and the other lives in Lviv."
"There are five apples. I'll eat one now and save the others for later."

Prawdziwy angielski

"Would you like another cup of tea?"
"Some people work better in the morning; others focus better at night."
"I only found one of my keys — where's the other one?"
"Are there any other flights available today?"

Uwaga

✗Can I have other cup of coffee?
✓Can I have another cup of coffee?

✗I need an other pen.
✓I need another pen.

Another to zawsze jedno słowo – nigdy „an other”.

✗I need another pens.
✓I need other pens.

Another łączy się z liczbą pojedynczą. Przed zwykłą liczbą mnogą użyj other. (Z liczebnikiem jest dobrze: „another two pens” = jeszcze dwa długopisy.)

✗Do you have any others questions?
✓Do you have any other questions?

Kalka z „inne pytania”. Przed rzeczownikiem other nie dostaje -s, nawet w liczbie mnogiej.

✗Some people like tea; other like coffee.
✓Some people like tea; others like coffee.

✗I have two dogs. One is black, another is white.
✓I have two dogs. One is black, the other is white.

Polskie „jeden…, drugi…”: przy dokładnie dwóch rzeczach ta druga to „the other” – konkretna, znana. Another sugeruje dowolny kolejny z otwartego zbioru.

✗Ones like tea; others like coffee.
✓Some like tea; others like coffee.

Kalka z „Jedni lubią herbatę, inni kawę”. Polskie „jedni” to some, nie ones.

Porównanie z polskim

Po polsku: „inny” (różny), „jeszcze jeden” (dodatkowy), „drugi” (z pary), „pozostali / reszta”

Angielski dzieli to według gramatyki, nie znaczenia: another + liczba pojedyncza („inny / jeszcze jeden długopis” = another pen), other + liczba mnoga lub niepoliczalny („inne pytania” = other questions), others samodzielnie („inni” = others), the other(s) dla konkretnych pozostałych („ten drugi” = the other, „pozostali” = the others).

„Inny” odmienia się przez liczby: „inny pomysł”, „inne pomysły”, „inni ludzie”

Angielskie other przed rzeczownikiem się nie zmienia: „other ideas”, „other people”. Some ideas are good, others aren't.”

„Jeden…, drugi…” i „Jedni…, inni…”

Przy dwóch rzeczach: „one…, the other…” („One is black, the other is white”). Przy grupach: „some…, others…” („Some like tea, others like coffee”). „Second” brzmi tu dziwnie, a „ones like tea” jest niepoprawne.

💡 Liczba pojedyncza policzalna → another (jedno słowo). Liczba mnoga lub niepoliczalny → other. Nic po nim → others.

💡 Konkretny pozostały z pary albo grupy („ten drugi”, „pozostali”) → the other / the others.

"This one's too small. Do you have it in another size?"

"Let me check. We also have a few other colors, if you're interested."

"Sure, show me the others."

"Here you go — this is the last one, and here's the other option we have."
