Attieksmes apstākļa vārdi where, when, why

B1 · Vidējais līmenisApzīmētāja palīgteikumi

The city where I was born. The day when we met. The reason why she left. Viens vārds prievārda + which vietā – gluži kā latviešu „kur“, „kad“, „kāpēc“.

Ko tu iemācīsies

  • Where aizstāj in/at/on which aiz vietas lietvārda – kā latviešu „kur“
  • When aizstāj in/on/at which aiz laika lietvārda – kā latviešu „kad“, arī tur, kur latviski saki „gads, kurā…“
  • Why aizstāj for which aiz the reason: „iemesls, kāpēc“ = the reason why
  • Ikdienas angļu valodā relative adverbs izklausās dabiskāk nekā prievārds + which

Viens vārds prievārda + which vietā

Where, when un why ir relative adverbs (attieksmes apstākļa vārdi). Katrs no tiem aizstāj prievārdu + which – konstrukciju, kas ir pareiza, bet bieži izklausās stīva un formāla. Ar relative adverbs apzīmētāja palīgteikumi kļūst īsāki un dabiskāki.

Latviski arī ir abas iespējas: „pilsēta, kurā es piedzimu“ (≈ in which) un „pilsēta, kur es piedzimu“ (≈ where). Angliski ikdienā parasts ir īsais variants. Ievēro komatus: latviski komats pirms „kur“, „kad“, „kāpēc“ ir vienmēr, bet angliski tikai tad, ja palīgteikums sniedz papildu informāciju (piemēram, aiz pilsētas nosaukuma: „Riga, where my brother lives, …“). Ja palīgteikums pasaka, par kuru vietu ir runa, komata nav: „The city where I was born…“.

"The city where I was born has changed a lot."
"The city in which I was born has changed a lot."

Where: vietām

Lieto where aiz lietvārda, kas nosauc vietu. Tas aizstāj in which, at which vai on which, un prievārds pazūd pavisam – tāpat kā latviešu „kur“ (salīdzini: „parks, kurā“ ↔ „parks, kur“). Tātad „the park where we used to play“, nevis „…where we used to play in“.

"This is the restaurant where we had our first date."
"This is the office where I work."

When: laika brīžiem

Lieto when aiz lietvārda, kas nosauc laiku: dienu, gadu, gadalaiku vai brīdi. Tas aizstāj in which, on which vai at which. Latviski tas parasti ir „kad“: „diena, kad mēs iepazināmies“ → „the day when we met“. Angliski when var arī izlaist: „the day we met“.

Uzmanies ar latviešu „kurā“: to saka gan par vietu („pilsēta, kurā“), gan par laiku („gads, kurā viss mainījās“). Ja to tulko burtiski, iznāk stīvais „the year in which“, bet ar dienām tas pat neder („the day in which we met“ – angliski būtu on). Un, ja „kurā“ domā kā where, iznāk kļūda „the year where“. Ar laika vārdiem angliski – when.

"I remember the day when we met."
"2020 was the year when everything changed."

Why: iemesliem

Lieto why aiz the reason. Tas aizstāj for which un izklausās daudz dabiskāk. Latviešu „iemesls, kāpēc viņa aizgāja“ tieši atbilst „the reason why she left“. Nesaki „the reason because“ (no „aizgāja, jo…“) un „the reason of“ (no „aiziešanas iemesls“): „the reason because she left“ un „the reason of she left“ ir nepareizi.

Ļoti bieži saka arī „the reason that …“ vai vispār bez why: „the reason she left“.

"That's the reason why she left early."
"Do you know the reason why the flight was delayed?"

Angļu valoda ikdienā

"This is the park where we used to play."
"Summer is the season when I feel most productive."
"Nobody knows the reason why he quit."
"That's the house where I grew up."

Uzmanību

✗This is the office when I work.
✓This is the office where I work.

Vietām lieto where, nevis when: when ir tikai laikam.

✗2020 was the year where everything changed.
✓2020 was the year when everything changed.

Latviešu „gads, kurā“ nav where. Ar gadiem, dienām, gadalaikiem un brīžiem lieto when („gads, kad“); where ir vietām.

✗This is the town why she was born.
✓This is the town where she was born.

Vietām lieto where: why lieto tikai aiz the reason.

✗That's the reason because she left early.
✓That's the reason why she left early.

„Iemesls, kāpēc“ nav because. Aiz the reason lieto why, that vai neko: the reason (why) she left.

✗This is the park where we used to play in.
✓This is the park where we used to play.

Where jau ietver prievārdu (= in which), tāpat kā „kur“ = „kurā“. Nejauc abas konstrukcijas: „the park where we used to play“ vai formālāk „the park in which we used to play“.

✗That's the house, where I grew up.
✓That's the house where I grew up.

Angliski vieta un laiks ir jāatšķir: vieta → where, laiks → when. „2020 was the year when everything changed.“, nevis „the year where“. Praktisks noteikums: ja latviski vari „kurā“ aizstāt ar „kad“, angliski ir when; ja ar „kur“ – where.

Latviski bieži saka „pilsēta, kurā es piedzimu“, „diena, kurā mēs iepazināmies“

Burtiskais tulkojums „the city in which I was born“ ir pareizs, taču ikdienā izklausās stīvi. Dabiskāk: „The city where I was born has changed a lot.“ Ar dienām prievārds būtu on, nevis in, tāpēc „the day in which we first met“ neizklausās dabiski. Saki vienkārši „the day when we first met“ vai „the day we first met“ – tāpat kā latviski „diena, kad“.

„Iemesls, kāpēc viņa aizgāja“ / „iemesls, kura dēļ viņa aizgāja“

Te latviešu „kāpēc“ palīdz: „That's the reason why she left early.“ Izvairies no „the reason because“ un „the reason of“: aiz reason nāk why, that vai nekas. Un why lieto tikai aiz reason; vietām vienmēr where.

💡 Ja runa ir par vietu, lieto where („kur“), ja par laiku – when („kad“), bet aiz the reason – why („kāpēc“).

💡 „Gads, kurā…“ angliski ir the year when…, nekad the year where.

💡 „Iemesls, kāpēc…“ = the reason why…, nekad the reason because.

💡 Aiz where nav vajadzīgs vēl viens prievārds: the house where I grew up.

Situācija no dzīves: atmiņas

"Do you remember the café where we used to study?"

"Of course — that was the year when we were both broke!"

"Ha, true. That's probably the reason why we studied there so much — it was cheap."
