Each other un one another: savstarpējie vietniekvārdi

A2 · PamatlīmenisVietniekvārdi

Each other un one another parāda, ka cilvēki kaut ko dara viens otram, nevis katrs sev. Latviski to bieži pasaka darbības vārda forma ar -ties, bet angliski vajag atsevišķus vārdus.

Ko tu iemācīsies

  • Ko nozīmē each other un one another un kā tie izsaka savstarpēju darbību
  • Kāpēc mūsdienu angļu valodā each other un one another ir savstarpēji aizstājami neatkarīgi no cilvēku skaita
  • Kā veido piederības formu: each other's un one another's
  • Kad latviešu darbības vārds ar -ties („pazīstamies“, „satikās“) nozīmē each other un kad themselves vai ourselves

Galvenā doma

Each other un one another ir savstarpējie vietniekvārdi. Tie parāda, ka divi vai vairāki cilvēki dara to pašu cits citam: darbība iet turp un atpakaļ, nevis tikai no viena cilvēka.

Salīdzini: „They helped each other move the couch“ nozīmē, ka katrs palīdzēja otram – latviski „Viņi palīdzēja viens otram pārnest dīvānu“. Angliski nav jāpievieno vārds „savstarpēji“: each other jau ietver šo nozīmi.

Each other un one another

Each other un one another izsaka vienu un to pašu savstarpējo nozīmi un teikumā darbojas vienādi: „The neighbors greet each other every morning.“ „The neighbors greet one another every morning.“ Abi teikumi nozīmē pilnīgi to pašu.

Tie var stāvēt tūlīt aiz darbības vārda (know each other) vai aiz prievārda (talk to one another, work with each other, care about one another). Ievēro: latviski prievārds ir izteiciena vidū („viens ar otru“, „viens par otru“), bet angliski tas vienmēr stāv PIRMS each other – with each other, nevis „each with other“. Turklāt latviešu forma mainās pēc dzimtes un locījuma (viens otru, viena otrai, cits citam), bet angļu izteiciens nekad nemainās.

"The neighbors greet each other every morning."
"The neighbors greet one another every morning."

Mūsdienu angļu valodā each other un one another lieto pārmaiņus neatkarīgi no cilvēku skaita: „The two roommates split the bills with each other“ un „The five roommates split the bills with each other“ ir vienlīdz dabiski, un abos teikumos tikpat labi derētu arī one another.

Tātad cilvēki nav jāskaita. Lieto to formu, kas tev šķiet dabiskāka: abas ir pareizas. Ikdienā each other dzird daudz biežāk, one another izklausās mazliet formālāk.

Piederības forma: each other's / one another's

Piederības formu veido ar apostrofu un s: each other's, one another's. „The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam.“ „The teams respect one another's effort.“ Latviski saki „viens otra piezīmes“ (ar ģenitīvu); angliski pietiek ar each other's lietvārda priekšā – bez of un bez „the notes of each other“.

Bieža kļūda rakstot ir apostrofs nepareizā vietā, piemēram, „each others'“. Other šeit vienmēr ir vienskaitlī, arī tad, ja domā par vairākiem cilvēkiem, tāpēc apostrofs stāv tieši pirms s: each other's, nevis each others'.

"The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam."
"The teams respect one another's effort."

Each other vai themselves: ko nozīmē latviešu -ties?

Latviešu galotne -ties dara divus darbus. „Mazgāties“ nozīmē mazgāt sevi (atgriezeniska darbība), bet „satikties“, „pazīties“, „sarakstīties“, „strīdēties“ nozīmē darīt kaut ko vienam ar otru (savstarpēja darbība). Angliski šīs nozīmes ir skaidri nošķirtas. „They hurt each other“ nozīmē, ka cilvēki savainoja viens otru: darbība gāja turp un atpakaļ. „They hurt themselves“ nozīmē, ka katrs savainoja pats sevi.

Tad each other / one another. Vai labāk der „sevi“ vai „pats sevi“? Tad vajag atgriezenisko vietniekvārdu, piemēram, themselves (tam ir sava nodarbība). Labā ziņa: kur latviski jau saki skaidri („Viņi vaino sevi“ / „Viņi vaino viens otru“), angliski ir tieši tāpat – themselves / each other.

Angļu valoda ikdienā

"The two companies have worked with each other for over a decade."
"Please introduce yourselves to one another before the meeting starts."
"The kids in the carpool always sit next to each other."
"Long-distance couples make an effort to call one another every day."

Uzmanību

✗There are three of us on the project, so we have to say "one another" instead of "each other."
✓There are three of us on the project, and we help each other (or one another) whenever someone gets stuck.

Noteikums „each other – diviem, one another – trim un vairāk“ vēl atrodams dažās grāmatās, taču mūsdienu angļu valodā tas ir mīts: abas formas ir aizstājamas neatkarīgi no grupas lieluma.

✗We always read each others' emails before sending a reply.
✓We always read each other's emails before sending a reply.

Šajā izteicienā other vienmēr ir vienskaitlī, tāpēc apostrofs stāv tieši pirms s: each other's, nevis each others'.

✗The committee members respect each others a lot.
✓The committee members respect each other a lot.

Latviski saki „cits citu“ vai „viens otru“ dažādās formās, bet angliski other nekad nesaņem -s neatkarīgi no cilvēku skaita.

✗The roommates always blame themselves when the kitchen is a mess.
✓The roommates always blame each other when the kitchen is a mess.

Ja dzīvokļa biedri vaino viens otru, vajag each other. Ar themselves teikums nozīmē, ka katrs vaino pats sevi – tāpat kā latviski „vaino sevi“.

✗We know ourselves from school.
✓We know each other from school.

„Mēs pazīstamies no skolas“ – galotne -ties te izsaka savstarpējību, nevis atgriezenisku darbību. Ourselves nozīmētu, ka katrs pazīst pats sevi.

✗The two sisters help mutually.
✓The two sisters help each other.

„Māsas savstarpēji palīdz“ vai „palīdz viena otrai“ netulko ar mutually. Angliski savstarpējību jau izsaka each other.

✗My parents often talk one with another about money.
✓My parents often talk with each other about money.

Burtisks tulkojums no „runā viens ar otru“. Angliski prievārds stāv pirms each other vai one another: talk with each other, talk to one another.

Angliski jāizvēlas: ja darbība iet turp un atpakaļ, lieto each other – „We know each other“, „They often argue with each other“, „They write to each other“. „We know ourselves“ nozīmētu, ka katrs labi pazīst pats sevi.

Angliski prievārds stāv pirms visa izteiciena, un each other paliek nedalīts: „They talk to each other“, „They care about each other“, „They think about one another“. Burtiskais „They talk one with another“ vai „each with other“ angliski nav iespējams.

Angliski each other paveic visu šo darbu viens pats: „They help each other“. „They help mutually“ ir nepareizi. Īpašības vārds mutual gan pastāv („mutual respect“ – savstarpēja cieņa), bet ne mutual, ne mutually aiz darbības vārda neaizstāj each other.

Arī daudzi angļu darbības vārdi ir savstarpēji bez papildu vārda: „We're meeting at eight“, „They got married“, „They kissed“, „They hugged“. Pie kiss vai hug var pievienot each other („They hugged each other“), bet tas nav obligāti. Atgriezenisks vietniekvārds šeit nav iespējams: „They married themselves“ ir nepareizi.

„Viens otru“, „viena otrai“, „viens otra“, „cits citam“: latviski izteiciens mainās pēc dzimtes, skaitļa un locījuma

Šeit angļu valoda ir vienkāršāka: each other un one another nekad nemainās. Divas māsas, divi draugi vai desmit cilvēku grupa – vienmēr each other (vai one another). Nekad „each others“ vai „ones another“.

→ each other. Vai der „sevi“? → themselves/ourselves/yourselves.

💡 „Savstarpēji“, „savā starpā“, „viens ar otru“ → vienkārši each other (prievārds pirms tā: with each other).

💡 Each other nekad nemainās: nav ne dzimtes, ne locījumu, ne each others.

Situācija no dzīves: kopīga dāvana kolēģei

"Should we all chip in for Maria's going-away gift?"

"Good idea. Let's text each other how much everyone can give."

"I'll message the group. We can also ask one another for gift ideas — she'd love something practical."

"Perfect. Let's check in with each other by Friday so we can order it in time."
