I believe that she is right. What he said surprised everyone.
Angliski: „I believe that she is right.“ „What he said surprised everyone.“ Ievēro: angļu teikumā nav latviešu „tas“ – what pats ir „tas, ko“. Un palīgteikumā angliski vienmēr ir teikuma priekšmets + darbības vārds.
Visbiežākā noun clause sākas ar that – latviešu „ka“. Tā parasti nāk aiz darbības vārdiem, kas nozīmē domāt, teikt vai ticēt (think, believe, know, say, hope), vai aiz is, lai nosauktu problēmu, cerību vai faktu. Uzmanies ar komatu: latviski pirms „ka“ komats ir obligāts („Es domāju, ka tā ir laba ideja“), bet angliski pirms that komatu neliek: I think that it's a good idea.
It's important that everyone arrives on time.“, nekad „Is important that…“. Un latviešu „lai“ ar vēlējuma izteiksmi („lai ierastos“) angliski nav would: lieto parastu tagadni – „that everyone arrives“. Formālā (īpaši amerikāņu) angļu valodā aiz important dzird arī pamatformu: that everyone arrive.
That izlaišana: latviski „ka“ izlaist nevar, bet angļu sarunvalodā that bieži izkrīt, ja palīgteikums ir papildinātājs: „I think (that) it's a good idea.“ Ja that-clause ir teikuma sākumā kā teikuma priekšmets, that paliek („That he decided to resign shocked the team.“). Aiz is rakstu valodā that parasti saglabā, lai gan neformālā runā to dažreiz izlaiž.
Latviešu „tas, ko“ ir what: „Mani interesē tas, ko viņa atklāja“ → „I'm interested in what she discovered.“ Netulko „tas“ atsevišķi: nevis „that what“ vai „it what“. Un „viss, ko“ ir „everything (that)…“ vai „all (that)…“, nevis „everything what“. Otrādi – nelieto what tur, kur latviski ir „ka“: „Problēma ir tā, ka mums nav laika“ → „The problem is that we're out of time“, nevis „is what“.
Uzmanies ar vārdu secību: latviski var teikt „tas, ko teica skolotājs“, ar darbības vārdu pirms teikuma priekšmeta. Angliski vienmēr teikuma priekšmets + darbības vārds: „what the teacher said“, nekad „what said the teacher“.
Latviski bieži atkārto „tas“ virsteikumā: „Kas pirmais pabeigs, tas saņems balvu“, „Ko tu izlemsi, tas man der“. Angliski šo „tas“ neatkārto, bet lieto whoever un whatever: „Whoever finishes first wins a prize.“, „Whatever you decide is fine with me.“ Vienkāršs who šeit skan kā vecs sakāmvārds („Who dares wins“), un teikuma priekšmetu ar it neatkārto („What you decide it is fine“ ir nepareizi).
Visbeidzot, latviski prievārds bieži nāk pirms „to, ka“ vai „to, ko“: „Es priecājos par to, ka…“, „Tas ir atkarīgs no tā, ko…“. Angliski that-clause parasti nevar nākt tieši aiz prievārda (izņemot noteiktus izteicienus, piemēram, in that vai except that). Lieto wh- vārdu, -ing formu vai „the fact that…“.
„Ir svarīgi, lai…“ latviski ir bez teikuma priekšmeta, bet angliski vajag it.
Nekopē secību „tas, ko teica skolotājs“: noun clause iekšienē ir teikuma priekšmets + darbības vārds.
Faktam („ka…“) lieto that, nevis what. What atbilst „tas, ko“ un attiecas uz lietu.
„Mani interesē tas, ko viņa atklāja“ ir in what. That-clause nevar nākt tieši aiz prievārda.
„Viss, ko“ nav everything what: aiz everything lieto that vai neko.
„Kas pirmais pabeigs, tas…“ mūsdienu angļu valodā ir whoever; vienkāršs who šeit skan kā vecs sakāmvārds.
Latviešu „Ko tu izlemsi, tas man der“: angliski noun clause jau ir teikuma priekšmets, tāpēc it nepievieno. Nozīmei „jebkas, ko“ lieto whatever.
Ja that-clause ir teikuma priekšmets teikuma sākumā, that neizlaiž – tāpat kā latviski „Tas, ka viņa atkāpās…“ bez „ka“ nav iespējams.
Latviski pirms „ka“ komats ir obligāts, bet angliski pirms that palīgteikuma komatu neliek.
Tas palīdz: „ka“ = that, „tas, ko“ = what. „The problem is that we're out of time.“ „What she needs is a break.“ Tikai neaizmirsti, ka angļu what jau ietver latviešu „tas“: nevis „That what she needs…“, bet „What she needs…“. Ja latviski teiktu „ka“, lieto that, nevis what.
Latviski teikums var sākties bez teikuma priekšmeta: „Ir svarīgi, lai visi ierastos laikā“
Angliski katram teikumam vajag teikuma priekšmetu, un šeit tas ir it: „It's important that everyone arrives on time.“ „Is important that…“ ir nepareizi. Tāpat: „It's clear that…“, „It's true that…“.
Angliski that-clause šeit parasti ir ar parastu tagadni, nevis ar would: „It's important that everyone arrives on time.“ „My hope is that things improve soon.“ „That everyone would arrive“ šeit neder.
Latviski teikuma priekšmets var būt aiz darbības vārda: „tas, ko teica skolotājs“, „tas, ko atklāja zinātniece“
Angliski noun clause iekšienē secība vienmēr ir teikuma priekšmets + darbības vārds: „what the teacher said“, „what the scientist discovered“. „What said the teacher surprised everyone“ ir nepareizi.
Latviski pirms „ka“ vienmēr liek komatu: „Es domāju, ka tā ir laba ideja“
Angliski pirms that palīgteikuma komatu neliek: „I think that it's a good idea.“, „She announced that everyone should evacuate.“ Komats pirms that ir tipiska latviešu rakstu kļūda.
„Kas pirmais pabeigs, tas uzvar“, „Ko tu izlemsi, tas man der“ – ar atkārtotu „tas“
Angliski „kas… tas“ ir whoever: „Whoever finishes first wins a prize.“ „Ko…, tas“ ar nozīmi „jebkas“ ir whatever: „Whatever you decide is fine with me.“ Otro „tas“ angliski neatkārto ne ar it, ne ar he.
💡 „Ka“ → that; „tas, ko“ → what; „kas…, tas“ → whoever; „lai ko“ → whatever.
💡 Noun clause iekšienē: teikuma priekšmets + darbības vārds (what the teacher said).
💡 „Ir svarīgi, lai…“ → It's important that…, ar it un bez would.
💡 Aiz prievārda lieto what vai the fact that, nevis tikai that; un pirms that nav komata.
"What do you think about the new plan?"
"Honestly, I think that it needs more work."
"That's fair. What worries me most is that we're running out of time."
"True. Whatever we decide, let's decide soon."

Laika palīgteikumi (adverb clauses of time)
Laika palīgteikumā nav nākotnes: aiz when, as soon as un until nāk tagadne, nevis will.
Cēloņa un nolūka palīgteikumi (reason and purpose)
Cēloņa un nolūka palīgteikumi angliski (because, so that, to) un in case – latviešu „katram gadījumam“ – ar tipiskajām latviešu kļūdām.
Attieksmes apstākļa vārdi where, when, why
Where, when un why kā attieksmes apstākļa vārdi (relative adverbs) prievārda + which vietā un kāpēc „the year where“ un „the reason because“ ir kļūdas.
