Abipusiai įvardžiai: each other ir one another

A2 · ElementarusĮvardžiai

Each other ir one another rodo, kad žmonės ką nors daro vienas kitam, o ne kiekvienas sau. Lietuviškai dažnai užtenka dalelytės -si-, o angliškai turi pasirinkti.

Ką išmoksi

  • Ką reiškia each other ir one another ir kaip jie nusako abipusį veiksmą
  • Kodėl šiuolaikinėje anglų kalboje each other ir one another vartojami pakaitomis, kad ir kiek žmonių dalyvautų
  • Kaip sudaroma savybinė forma: each other's ir one another's
  • Kada lietuviškas -si- („sveikinasi“, „pažįstamės“) yra each other, o kada – themselves ar ourselves

Pagrindinė mintis

Each other ir one another yra abipusiai įvardžiai (reciprocal pronouns).

Palygink: „They helped each other move the couch“ reiškia, kad kiekvienas padėjo kitam – lietuviškai „Jie padėjo vienas kitam pernešti sofą“. Lietuviškas „vienas kitą“ pažodžiui ir yra one another, todėl ši konstrukcija tau turėtų būti suprantama. Tik angliškai ji niekada nekaitoma.

Each other ir one another

Each other ir one another reiškia tą patį abipusį veiksmą ir sakinyje elgiasi vienodai: „The neighbors greet each other every morning.“ „The neighbors greet one another every morning.“ Abu sakiniai reiškia lygiai tą patį – „Kaimynai kas rytą sveikinasi“.

Jie gali eiti iškart po veiksmažodžio (know each other – pažinoti vienas kitą) arba po prielinksnio (talk to one another – kalbėtis, work with each other – dirbti kartu, care about one another – rūpintis vienas kitu). Lietuviškai sakome „vienas kitą“, „viena kitai“, „vieni kitų“, „vienos su kitomis“ – forma keičiasi pagal giminę, skaičių ir linksnį. Angliška forma niekada nesikeičia.

"The neighbors greet each other every morning."
"The neighbors greet one another every morning."

Tikroji anglų kalba: taisyklė „du prieš tris ar daugiau“ pasenusi

Galbūt mokeisi, kad each other tinka tik dviem žmonėms, o one another – trims ar daugiau.

Šiuolaikinėje anglų kalboje each other ir one another vartojami pakaitomis, kad ir kiek būtų žmonių: „The two roommates split the bills with each other“ ir „The five roommates split the bills with each other“ skamba visiškai natūraliai, o one another abiem atvejais tiktų lygiai taip pat.

Taigi žmonių skaičiuoti nereikia. Rinkis tą formą, kuri tau skamba natūraliau – abi teisingos. Kasdienėje kalboje each other girdėsi daug dažniau, o one another skamba šiek tiek oficialiau.

Savybinė forma: each other's / one another's

Savybinė forma sudaroma su apostrofu ir s: each other's, one another's. „The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam.“ (Studentai prieš egzaminą skolinosi vienas kito užrašus.) „The teams respect one another's effort.“ Lietuviškai sakome kilmininku „vienas kito užrašai“, bet angliškai nereikia of: each other's eina prieš daiktavardį.

Dažna rašybos klaida – apostrofas ne vietoje, pavyzdžiui, „each others'“. Net jei galvoji apie „vieni kitų“ (daugiskaita), other čia lieka vienaskaitos, todėl apostrofas eina tiesiai prieš s: each other's, o ne each others'.

"The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam."
"The teams respect one another's effort."

Each other ar themselves: ką reiškia lietuviškas -si-?

„They hurt each other“ reiškia, kad skirtingi žmonės įskaudino vienas kitą: veiksmas ėjo tarp jų. „They hurt themselves“ reiškia, kad kiekvienas susižeidė pats.

Tada each other / one another. Ar labiau tinka „save“, „pats sau“? Tada reikia sangrąžinio įvardžio, pavyzdžiui, themselves – jam skirta atskira pamoka.

Anglų kalba kasdienybėje

"The two companies have worked with each other for over a decade."
"Please introduce yourselves to one another before the meeting starts."
"The kids in the carpool always sit next to each other."
"Long-distance couples make an effort to call one another every day."

Atkreipk dėmesį

✗There are three of us on the project, so we have to say "one another" instead of "each other."
✓There are three of us on the project, and we help each other (or one another) whenever someone gets stuck.

Taisyklė „each other – dviem, one another – trims ar daugiau“ dar pasitaiko vadovėliuose, bet šiuolaikinėje anglų kalboje tai mitas: abi formos vartojamos pakaitomis, kad ir kokio dydžio būtų grupė.

✗We always read each others' emails before sending a reply.
✓We always read each other's emails before sending a reply.

Šioje išraiškoje other visada vienaskaitos, net jei galvoji apie „vieni kitų“. Todėl apostrofas eina tiesiai prieš s: each other's, o ne each others'.

✗The committee members respect each others a lot.
✓The committee members respect each other a lot.

Lietuviškai sakytum „gerbia vieni kitus“ – daugiskaita. Angliškai other šioje išraiškoje niekada negauna -s, kad ir kiek būtų žmonių.

✗The roommates always blame themselves when the kitchen is a mess.
✓The roommates always blame each other when the kitchen is a mess.

Jei kambario draugai kaltina vienas kitą, reikia each other.

✗We know ourselves from school.
✓We know each other from school.

Sakinyje „Mes pažįstamės nuo mokyklos laikų“ dalelytė -si- reiškia „vienas kitą“. Ourselves reikštų, kad kiekvienas pažįsta save patį.

✗The two sisters always help to each other.
✓The two sisters always help each other.

Lietuviškai „padeda vienas kitam“ – naudininkas, todėl norisi pridėti to. Bet help eina tiesiai su papildiniu: help each other, help me, help them.

Palyginimas su tavo kalba

Lietuviškai abipusį veiksmą dažnai nusako ta pati dalelytė -si- kaip ir sangrąžinį: „Mes pažįstamės“, „Jie sveikinasi“, „Jie dažnai susirašinėja“

Angliškai turi pasirinkti. Jei veiksmas eina į abi puses, vartok each other: „We know each other“, „They greet each other“. Jei -si- automatiškai verti themselves ar ourselves, pakeiti prasmę: „We know ourselves“ reiškia, kad kiekvienas gerai pažįsta save patį, o ne kad pažįstate vienas kitą.

„Vienas kitą“ kaitoma: „vienas kitam“, „viena kitą“, „vieni kitų“, „vienos su kitomis“ – pagal giminę, skaičių ir linksnį

Angliškai tai daug paprasčiau: each other ir one another niekada nesikeičia. Dvi seserys, du draugai ar dešimties žmonių grupė – visada each other (arba one another). Niekada each others ar ones another. Ir nereikia pridėti to, kai lietuviškai būtų naudininkas: „Jie padeda vienas kitam“ → „They help each other“, o ne „help to each other“.

Daug lietuviškų veiksmažodžių su -si- angliškai neturi jokio įvardžio: „Susitiksime aštuntą“, „Jie susituokė“, „Jie bučiavosi“, „Jie apsikabino“

Kai kurie angliški veiksmažodžiai patys savaime yra abipusiai: „We're meeting at eight“, „They got married“, „They kissed“, „They hugged“. Su kiss ar hug galima pridėti each other („They hugged each other“), bet nebūtina. Pažodinis sangrąžinis variantas („We meet ourselves“, „They married themselves“) angliškai neegzistuoja.

Lietuviškai sakome „vienas kito užrašai“, „vienas kito nuomonė“ – su kilmininku

Angliškai kilmininko atitikmuo yra savybinė forma su apostrofu, ir ji eina prieš daiktavardį: „each other's notes“, „one another's opinions“. Pažodinis „the notes of each other“ skamba nenatūraliai, o „each other notes“ be apostrofo – klaida.

→ each other. Tinka „save“? → themselves/ourselves/yourselves.

💡 „Vienas kitą“, „vienas kitam“, „vieni kitų“ – angliškai visada tas pats each other (arba one another).

💡 Each other niekada nesikeičia: jokios giminės, jokios daugiskaitos, jokio each others.
