I stayed home because it was raining. I stayed home because of the rain.

  • because, since, as 뒤에는 주어 + 동사가 있는 완전한 절이 와요.
  • because of, due to, owing to

영어에서 이유를 말하는 문법 구조는 두 가지예요. because/since/as + 완전한 절, 또는 because of/due to/owing to + 명사구예요.

그러니 because는 “-기 때문에”, because of는 “N 때문에”라고 짝지어 기억하세요.

"I was late because the bus was delayed."
"I was late because of the delayed bus."

because / since / as + 절

한국어는 “비가 와서”, “추워서”라고 하면 되지만 영어는 “because it was raining”, “because it was cold”처럼 it을 넣어요. “Because it was raining, so we stayed inside.”가 아니라 “Because it was raining, we stayed inside.” 셋째, 여기서 since는 “-부터”가 아니라 “-니까”, as는 “-로서”나 “-처럼”이 아니라 “-니까, -기 때문에”라는 뜻이에요: “As it was getting late, we said goodbye.”(시간이 늦어져서 작별 인사를 했어요)

"We left early because the traffic was bad."
"Since you're here, you might as well stay for dinner."
"As it was getting late, we said goodbye."

because of / due to / owing to + 명사구

하지만 “버스가 늦게 왔기 때문에”는 절이니까 because예요. because of 뒤에는 “the storm”, “the traffic”처럼 명사만 와요. due to도 마찬가지예요. “due to the bad weather”는 맞지만 “due to it was bad weather”는 틀려요.

"The flight was delayed because of the storm."
"The event was cancelled due to low attendance."
"Owing to a technical problem, the flight was delayed."

"She got the job because she had the most experience."
"The road was closed because of an accident."
"Since it's your birthday, dinner's on me."
"The project was delayed due to a shortage of materials."

✗I was late because of the bus was delayed.
✓I was late because the bus was delayed.

주어와 동사가 있는 절(the bus was delayed) 앞에는 because를 써요. 명사로 바꾸면 because of the delayed bus예요.

✗The match was cancelled because the storm.
✓The match was cancelled because of the storm.

✗Since of she was tired, she left early.
✓Since she was tired, she left early.

✗Because it was raining, so we stayed inside.
✓Because it was raining, we stayed inside.

It was raining, so we stayed inside.

✗We stayed inside because was raining.
✓We stayed inside because it was raining.

절 앞에는 because(“because it was raining”), 명사 앞에는 because of(“because of the rain”)예요. “The match was cancelled because of the storm.”은 “폭풍 때문에”이고, “because the storm”은 because 뒤에 절이 없어서 틀린 표현이에요. due to와 owing to는 because of와 같은 자리에 와요.

“Because it was raining, we stayed inside.” 또는 “It was raining, so we stayed inside.” “Because it was raining, so we stayed inside.”

영어에서 because, since, as 뒤의 절에는 항상 주어가 있어야 해요. 날씨나 시간처럼 특별한 주어가 없을 때는 it을 써요: “because it was cold”, “because it's late”. “because was cold”, “because is late”는 틀려요.

영어 since는 둘 다 될 수 있어요: “I've lived here since 2019.”(2019년부터)와 “Since you're here, you might as well stay for dinner.”(여기 왔으니까 저녁도 먹고 가요)예요. 어느 쪽인지는 문맥으로 알 수 있어요. as도 “-로서”, “-처럼”만 있는 게 아니라 “-니까, -기 때문에”라는 뜻이 있어요: “As it was getting late, we said goodbye.”

그러면 because/since/as. 그러면 because of/due to/owing to.

💡 because 뒤에도 주어를 꼭 쓰세요: because it was raining.

"Why was the concert cancelled?"

"It was cancelled because of the storm warning."

"That makes sense — since the roads were flooding, it wouldn't have been safe."

"Exactly. They're rescheduling it for next month."
