would rather(むしろ〜したい)

I'd rather stay home. I'd rather you left.

I'd rather stay home.
I'd rather you left.
  • would rather A than B
  • 自分の好みの否定は would rather not

“I'd rather” の I'd は I would の短縮形です。

"I'd rather stay home tonight."
"I'd rather you left now."

「今夜は家にいたい」→ “I'd rather stay home tonight.” 「彼女は在宅で働くほうがいい」→ “She'd rather work from home.” 間違えやすいのは、want to や prefer to(prefer は -ing も可)につられて to や -ing をつけてしまうことです。“I'd rather to stay” や “She'd rather working” は間違いです。

否定は rather のすぐあとに not を置きます:“I'd rather not go to the party.”(パーティーには行きたくないな)。

"I'd rather stay home tonight."
"She'd rather work from home."

日本語の「あなたに帰ってほしい」から、学校で習った want +人+ to の形を使って “I'd rather you to leave” としたり、“I'd rather you would leave” と would を2回使ったりしないようにしましょう。正しくは “I'd rather you left now.” です。また、「だれにも言わないでほしい」の「ない」は現在の形なので “I'd rather you don't tell anyone.” と言いたくなりますが、否定は didn't を使います:“I'd rather you didn't tell anyone.”

知っておくと便利なこと:くだけた会話では “I'd rather you don't…”

"I'd rather you left now."
"I'd rather you didn't tell anyone."

would rather A than B:2つを比べる

英語では先に選ぶほうを言い、than のあとに選ばないほうを言います:“I'd rather walk than drive.” than のあとに to はつけません。“than to drive” は間違いです。

"I'd rather walk than drive."
"I'd rather eat at home than eat out."

"I'd rather not go to the party."
"I'd rather you called me first."
"We'd rather wait here than go inside."
"I'd rather he didn't find out just yet."

注意

✗I'd rather to stay home tonight.
✓I'd rather stay home tonight.

to は want to や prefer to の形で、would rather にはつきません。

I'd rather you leave now.
✓I'd rather you left now.

✗She'd rather working from home.
✓She'd rather work from home.

She prefers working from home.

✗I'd rather you to leave now.
✓I'd rather you left now.

✗I'd rather walk than to drive.
✓I'd rather walk than drive.

✗I rather stay home tonight.
✓I'd rather stay home tonight.

I'd rather か I would rather と言いましょう。

「〜したい」は want to、「〜するほうが好き」は prefer to / prefer -ing と、to や -ing をつける形で習う

would rather は助動詞 would を使った表現なので、can や will のあとと同じく、うしろは原形だけです:“I'd rather stay home.”(to なし)、“I'd rather not go.”(not は rather のすぐあと)。

would rather で相手にしてほしいことを言うときは、主語+過去形です:“I'd rather you called me first.” “I'd rather you to call me first” や、2つ目の would(“I'd rather you would call me first”)は使いません。

英語では選ぶほうが先です:“I'd rather walk than drive.” than のあとも原形で、to はつけません。

💡 「あなたに〜してほしい」= I'd rather you +過去形(I'd rather you left)。

"Want to grab dinner out tonight?"

"Honestly, I'd rather stay in — I'm exhausted."

"That's fine. I'd rather you rested anyway."

"Thanks for understanding."
