because of、due to、in spite of。
of や to を省いたり(“due the storm”)、別の語に変えたり(“according with”)はできません。
because of(前置詞、+ 名詞句)と because(接続詞、+ 主語と動詞のある節)、despite / in spite of(前置詞)と although / even though(接続詞)です。
“despite the fact that it was raining” のようにつなぎの語を入れるか、シンプルに “although it was raining” と言いましょう。
of が付くのは in spite of のほうです。
原因:because of、due to、owing to、as a result of。逆接:despite、in spite of。情報源:according to。観点:in terms of、as regards、with regard to。
to まで含めて1つの表現なので、“according the report” や “according with the report” とは言いません。 また、自分の意見を言うときは “according to me” ではなく “in my opinion” を使いましょう。
in terms of / with regard to =「〜の点で」「〜に関して」「〜について言えば」です。 “in regard of” は標準的な英語ではなく、“with regard to”、“in regard to”、“as regards” を使います。
日本語の「〜のために」は原因にも目的にも使えるので、“The trip was cancelled for the bad weather” としがちですが、原因を表すなら because of や due to を使います。伝統的には due to はおもに be動詞の後で使われていましたが(“The delay was due to a technical fault.”)、今では文頭や他の動詞の後でもごく自然です(“The flight was delayed due to a technical problem.”)。
of が付くのは同じ意味の in spite of だけです。
according with、according だけ、by the report とは言いません。
または “despite the fact that it was raining” とします。
名詞 +「の」の形なら群前置詞:“because of the rain”、“despite the rain”。文の形なら接続詞:“because it was raining”、“although it was raining”。“Because of it was raining” や “because the rain” は、この2つを混ぜてしまった誤りです。
英語の despite / in spite of は名詞句専用です:“despite the rain”。文が続くなら “although it was raining” か “despite the fact that it was raining” にします。“despite it was raining” は誤りです。また、despite は of なしの1語、in spite of は of 付きです。
「に」や「よる」を by に置き換えた “By the report, …” 自分の意見には according to me ではなく “in my opinion” や “I think” を使います。
原因を表すときは because of、due to、owing to を使います:“The trip was cancelled because of the bad weather.” “cancelled for the bad weather” のように for を使うのは不自然です。
💡 despite は of なしの1語、in spite of は of 付き。
💡 「〜によると」= according to。 in terms of の s も忘れずに。
