(Comparative Adverbs)

  • -ly で終わるほとんどの副詞:more/most+副詞(more quickly, most clearly)
  • -ly の付かない短い副詞:副詞+-er/-est(fast → faster → fastest, hard → harder → hardest)
  • 不規則変化:well → better → best, badly → worse → worst, far → farther/further → farthest/furthest
  • 比べる相手は than で表し、比較級のうしろに置きます:faster than, more clearly than

比較級は more clearly、more carefully です。more のあとでも -ly を落とさないようにしましょう:more clearly, more slowly(more clear, more slow ではありません)。

"She explains things more clearly than her teacher."
"He runs the fastest of all of us."

-ly の副詞には more / most

「もっとはっきり」は more clearly(clearlier や more clear ではありません)、「もっと慎重に」は more carefully(carefullier や more careful ではありません)。「一番はっきり答えた」は most clearly です:“She answered the questions most clearly of anyone.”

"He speaks more confidently now than last year."
"She answered the questions most clearly of anyone."

最上級も「一番速く」につられて “the most fast” とせず、fastest です:“Of everyone in the race, he finished fastest.” fast と hard には -ly を付けません(“fastly” という語はなく、hardly は「ほとんど〜ない」という別の意味です)。

「予定より早く着いた」は “She arrived earlier than expected”、「兄より速く走る」は “She runs faster than her brother” です。

でも more quickly, more slowly, more loudly は決して間違いではありません。

"She arrived earlier than expected."
"Of everyone in the race, he finished fastest."

不規則変化:better, worst, farther/further

「もっと上手に歌う」を “sings more well” や “more good” としないようにしましょう。正しくは “He sings better than I do.” なお、better は形容詞 good の比較級でもあり(a better idea)、副詞 well の比較級でもあります。

「チームの中で一番出来が悪かった」は “She performed worst of the whole team” で、“the most bad” ではありません。farther/farthest は主に実際の距離に使います。further/furthest は比喩的に「さらに、もっと深く」という意味でも使えます(“further discussion”、“look further into this”)。

"He sings better than I do."
"She performed worst of the whole team."
"We need to look further into this."

"Could you explain that more clearly, please?"
"She's been working harder than usual this month."
"Of all the candidates, he interviewed best."
"The weather got worse as the day went on."

注意

✗She runs more fast than her brother.
✓She runs faster than her brother.

✗She explained it carefullier than before.
✓She explained it more carefully than before.

-ly の副詞には -er/-est を付けず、more/most を使います。

✗He drives more careful than his sister.
✓He drives more carefully than his sister.

✗He spoke than his colleague more clearly.
✓He spoke more clearly than his colleague.

✗She arrived faster than everyone else.
✓She arrived earlier than everyone else.

✗He sings more good than I do.
✓He sings better than I do.

more good, more well, more better

✗She performed the most bad of the team.
✓She performed the worst of the team.

英語の more は -ly の副詞にだけ使います(more clearly, more carefully)。-ly のない短い副詞は -er/-est です:“She runs faster than her brother”、“She works harder than anyone else”。“more fast” や “more hard”、両方付けた “more faster” は間違いです。

well と badly は best と worst です。“Of all the runners, he finished fastest.” “She performed worst of the whole team.” “the most fast” や “the most bad” とは言いません。-ly の副詞なら most を使います:most clearly。

英語では順番が逆で、比較級のあとに than+比べる相手が来ます:“He spoke more clearly than his colleague.” “He spoke than his colleague more clearly” とは言いません。また、than のあとは “than I do”(標準的な言い方)や “than me”(くだけた言い方)にします。

時間が「早い」は early → earlier:“She arrived earlier than expected.” スピードが「速い」は fast → faster:“She runs faster than her brother.”

💡 形容詞+-ly の副詞(carefully, clearly)なら more/most。

💡 比べるときも -ly は残します:more carefully(more careful ではありません)。

💡 「もっと速く」「もっと一生懸命」= faster, harder。

💡 「もっと上手に」= better、「一番上手に」= best、「もっと下手に」= worse、「一番下手に」= worst。

💡 語順は「比較級+than+相手」:more clearly than his colleague。

"How do you think it went?"

"Better than last time, honestly. You explained the data more clearly."

"Thanks. I still spoke too fast at the start, though."

"Maybe a little, but you handled questions more confidently than before."
