be about to と be due to

be about to と be due to は、どちらも近い未来を表しますが、答える問いが違います。

  • 否定文・疑問文と、過去の was about to(「〜しようとしていたところ」)

be about to:今にも起こるところ

日本語の「(今にも)〜するところだ」にぴったり当たります:“The movie is about to start.”

“about starting” ではなく about to start です。

過去形の was/were about to は、「〜しようとしていたところに…」にぴったりです:“She was just about to leave when the phone rang.”

"The movie is about to start."
"She was just about to leave when the phone rang."

「予定」を英語の名詞 plan や schedule で直訳して、“The plane has a plan to land at 3pm.” 時刻表どおりの予定は be due to で表しましょう(“is scheduled to” や “is expected to” も使えます)。

受動態でも同じ形で、be due to be + 過去分詞になります:“The results are due to be announced next week.”

"The plane is due to land at 3pm."
"The results are due to be announced next week."

“The results are about to be announced next week” は不自然です。

「料理するところ」(まだ始めていない)は “I'm about to cook”、「料理しているところ」(もう始めている)は現在進行形の “I'm cooking”、「料理したところ」(終わったばかり)は “I've just cooked” です。

"We're about to eat — can you call back later?
"The train isn't due to arrive until 9.

do/does は使いません:“The train isn't due to arrive until 9.” “Is the meeting about to start?”

否定の be not about to には、「〜するつもりはまったくない」という強い否定の意味もあります:“I'm not about to give up now.”(今さらあきらめるつもりはない)。

「電車は9時まで来ない予定だ」「9時にならないと着かない」は、not due to… until で表します:“The train isn't due to arrive until 9.” until は日本語の「〜まで」に当たるので、日本語の発想どおりに組み立てられます。

"Is the meeting about to start?"
"Is the store about to close?"

"He's about to sign the contract."
"The flight is due to depart at noon."
"The show is about to begin."
"The train isn't due to arrive until 9."

注意

✗The movie is about starting.
✓The movie is about to start.

be about のあとは to + 動詞の原形で、-ing 形にはなりません。

✗The plane is due land at 3pm.
✓The plane is due to land at 3pm.

✗The train has a plan to arrive at 9.
✓The train is due to arrive at 9.

✗We're due to eat — can you call back later?
✓We're about to eat — can you call back later?

✗The results are about to be announced next week.
✓The results are due to be announced next week.

next week や具体的な時刻がある文では be about to は使いません。

これは be about to + 動詞の原形とほぼ同じです:“He's about to sign the contract.”(契約書にサインするところだ)、“I was (just) about to leave when…”(出かけようとしていたら…)。

時刻表や予定で決まっていることは be due to で言います:“The train is due to arrive at 9.”。「予定」を plan と訳した “The train has a plan to arrive at 9” は不自然です。 “is scheduled to” や “is expected to” も正しい言い方です。

due to + 名詞は「〜のため」という原因の意味です:“The train is late due to the storm.”。 また、to のない due は「(支払いなどの)期限が来る」という意味にもなります:“The rent is due on Friday.”。見分け方:due to のあとが動詞(arrive、land、start)なら予定、名詞(the storm、delays)なら原因です。

💡 「今にも〜するところ」= be about to + 原形(-ing ではありません)。

💡 文に時刻や next week があれば be due to。be about to は「今すぐ」です。

💡 「〜するところ」は about to、「〜しているところ」は進行形、「〜したところ」は have just done。

"Is our flight on time?"

"Yes, it's due to depart at noon — right on schedule."

"Great, should we head to the gate?"

"Yes — boarding is about to start."
