Avverbi relativi where, when, why

B1 · IntermedioLe proposizioni relative

The city where I was born. The day when we met. The reason why she left.

  • Where sostituisce in/at/on which dopo un sostantivo di luogo, come «dove» in italiano
  • When sostituisce in/on/at which dopo un sostantivo di tempo, anche se in italiano dici «l'anno dove…» o «il giorno in cui…»
  • Why sostituisce for which dopo the reason: «il motivo per cui» in inglese è the reason why

Where, when e why sono relative adverbs (avverbi relativi).

Attenzione a non tradurre l'articolo: «nella quale» è in which, mai «in the which».

"The city where I was born has changed a lot."
"The city in which I was born has changed a lot."

Where: per i luoghi

Sostituisce in which, at which o on which, e la preposizione sparisce del tutto, proprio come con «dove» in italiano: «the park where we used to play», non «…where we used to play in».

"This is the restaurant where we had our first date."
"This is the office where I work."

When: per i momenti

Sostituisce in which, on which o at which.

In inglese «the day when we met» è normalissimo, e puoi anche omettere when: «the day we met». Quello che non conviene è copiare «in cui» con in which o in that.

"I remember the day when we met."
"2020 was the year when everything changed."

Why: per i motivi

Usa why dopo the reason. Sostituisce for which e suona molto più naturale. Non tradurre «per cui» con because o of: «the reason because she left» e «the reason of she left» sono sbagliati.

Sono molto comuni anche «the reason that …» o la forma senza nessuna parola di collegamento: «the reason she left».

"That's the reason why she left early."
"Do you know the reason why the flight was delayed?"

Esempi di inglese reale

"This is the park where we used to play."
"Summer is the season when I feel most productive."
"Nobody knows the reason why he quit."
"That's the house where I grew up."

Attenzione

✗This is the office when I work.
✓This is the office where I work.

Per i luoghi usa where, non when: when è solo per il tempo.

✗2020 was the year where everything changed.
✓2020 was the year when everything changed.

Non copiare «l'anno dove…» dell'italiano parlato: con anni, giorni, stagioni o momenti si usa when; where è per i luoghi.

✗This is the town why she was born.
✓This is the town where she was born.

Per i luoghi usa where: why va solo dopo the reason.

✗That's the reason because she left early.
✓That's the reason why she left early.

Dopo the reason usa why, that o niente: the reason (why) she left.

✗This is the park where we used to play in.
✓This is the park where we used to play.

Where contiene già la preposizione (= in which), come «dove» in italiano. Non mescolare le due strutture: «the park where we used to play» oppure, in modo più formale, «the park in which we used to play».

Dopo un sostantivo di tempo serve when: «2020 was the year when everything changed.», non «the year where».

Più naturale: «The city where I was born has changed a lot.» E con i giorni la preposizione sarebbe on, non in: «the day in which we first met» non suona naturale. Di' semplicemente «the day when we first met» o «the day we first met».

In inglese non serve tradurre «per cui»: «That's the reason why she left early.» Evita «the reason because» e «the reason of»: dopo reason vanno why, that o niente.

💡 «L'anno dove…» in inglese è the year when…, mai the year where.

💡 «Il motivo per cui…» = the reason why…, mai the reason because.

💡 Dopo where non aggiungere un'altra preposizione: the house where I grew up.

Situazione reale: ripensare ai vecchi tempi

"Do you remember the café where we used to study?"

"Of course — that was the year when we were both broke!"

"Ha, true. That's probably the reason why we studied there so much — it was cheap."
