At the weekend o on the weekend: stesso significato, preposizione diversa.
L'importante è restare su una sola variante all'interno dello stesso testo.
L'inglese britannico dice at the weekend e Monday to Friday; l'americano dice on the weekend e Monday through Friday (through chiarisce che il venerdì è compreso).
Until serve per un momento finale: «The shop is open until six.»
In inglese: five past ten (britannico), five after ten (americano) o semplicemente ten oh five.
Britannico at the weekend, americano on the weekend, oppure semplicemente this weekend.
«Compilare un modulo» è fill in (britannico) o fill out (americano). Compile significa «raccogliere, mettere insieme», come in compile a list.
Per un intervallo di giorni si usa to (britannico) o through (americano).
L'italiano somma i minuti con «e»; l'inglese usa past (o after in americano): «five past ten», «five after ten», «half past ten». Per i minuti che mancano si usa to: «a quarter to eleven». «Ten and five» o «ten and a half» non si capiscono come orari.
Qui l'italiano coincide spesso con l'inglese britannico: «Monday to Friday», «in the team». L'americano preferisce «Monday through Friday» e «on the team».
Con weekend l'inglese non usa in: britannico «at the weekend», americano «on the weekend».
«Fill up» invece è per bicchieri e serbatoi.
💡 «Nel fine settimana» → at the weekend (britannico) o on the weekend (americano), mai in the weekend.
💡 «Le dieci e cinque» si dice five past ten in britannico e five after ten in americano, mai ten and five.
💡 «Da lunedì a venerdì» → Monday to Friday (britannico) o Monday through Friday (americano); until solo per un momento finale.
"The receptionist asked me to fill out this form, but I kept writing 'fill in' out of habit."
"Ha, that happens — it's the same form either way, just a different verb depending on where you are."
"Good to know. Anything else I should watch for while I'm here?"
"Just listen for 'on the weekend' instead of 'at the weekend' — that one trips people up too."
