Mixed conditionals

C1 · AvanzatoIl periodo ipotetico

If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.

  • Perché would non va nella frase con if, e perché «sarei andato» non è would be gone ma would have gone

"If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now."
"If she weren't so shy, she would have spoken up at the meeting."

Il trucco in italiano: «avessi studiato» = had studied, «ora sarei» = would be now. Attenzione: «sarei stato» corrisponde a would have been, e non va d'accordo con «now». «If they had saved more money, they would be on vacation right now.» If she had taken the job offer, she would be living in Paris now.»

"If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now."
"If they had saved more money, they would be on vacation right now."

Il «fosse» corrisponde al past simple inglese: «If he weren't so cautious…», non «If he wouldn't be so cautious…». E nella principale, il condizionale passato è sempre would have + participio, anche quando in italiano l'ausiliare è essere: «sarei andato» → would have gone, mai would be gone.

Su were/was: dopo I/he/she/it, were è la forma classica, un po' più formale («If she weren't so shy…»); was («If she wasn't so shy…») è altrettanto comune e corretto nell'uso quotidiano.

"If she weren't so shy, she would have spoken up at the meeting."
"If he weren't so cautious, he would have taken the risk last year."

Esempi di inglese reale

"If I hadn't missed the flight, I would be there with you now."
"If he had listened to advice, he wouldn't be in this situation now."
"If we hadn't moved abroad, we would still be near our family."
"If I weren't afraid of heights, I would have gone skydiving with you last year."

Attenzione

✗If I had studied medicine, I would have been a doctor now.
✓If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.

«Now» indica un risultato nel presente, quindi va would + forma base, non would have + participio.

✗If she weren't so shy, she would speak up at the meeting last week.
✓If she weren't so shy, she would have spoken up at the meeting last week.

Un momento preciso del passato (last week) vuole would have + participio nella principale, come «avrebbe parlato», non «parlerebbe».

✗If I studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.
✓If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.

✗If I weren't afraid of heights, I would be gone skydiving with you last year.
✓If I weren't afraid of heights, I would have gone skydiving with you last year.

«Sarei andato» ha l'ausiliare essere in italiano, ma in inglese il condizionale passato è sempre would have + participio.

✗If I would have taken the job offer, I would be living in Paris now.
✓If I had taken the job offer, I would be living in Paris now.

Niente would nella frase con if: «Se avessi accettato l'offerta» è had taken, non would have taken. Would va solo nella principale («ora vivrei a Parigi» → would be living).

✗If he wouldn't be so cautious, he would have taken the risk last year.
✓If he weren't so cautious, he would have taken the risk last year.

Questo ti aiuta molto: «avessi studiato» corrisponde a had studied, «sarei» a would be, «fosse» a were/was e «avrebbe parlato» a would have spoken. Traduci metà per metà: «avessi studiato … ora sarei» → «had studied … would be now». Gli errori nascono quando, per insicurezza, si mette would have dappertutto: «If I had studied medicine, I would have been a doctor now» corrisponde a «ora sarei stato medico», che non suona bene nemmeno in italiano.

La frase con if ha il past perfect (passato) o il past simple (presente): «If I had known…», non «If I would have known…»; «If he weren't so stubborn…», non «If he wouldn't be so stubborn…». «If I would have…» si sente a volte nell'inglese colloquiale americano, ma è considerato scorretto: evitalo nello scritto e agli esami.

In inglese l'ausiliare è sempre have: would have gone, would have come, would have stayed. «Sarei andato a fare paracadutismo» → «I would have gone skydiving», non «I would be gone». Would be + participio ha un altro significato e non indica un'azione passata.

💡 Traduci metà per metà: «avessi fatto» nella frase con se = had done; «ora sarei/farei» = would + forma base; «avrei fatto / sarei andato» nella principale = would have done / would have gone.

💡 Niente would nella frase con if, e niente would be al posto di would have nella principale.

💡 Chiediti separatamente: QUANDO vale la condizione? QUANDO vale il risultato? Parole come now o last year te lo dicono.

"Do you ever regret not going into medicine?"

"Sometimes. If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now, not stuck in an office."

"You could still go back to school."

"Maybe. But if I weren't so settled here, I would have already done it."
