B1 · IntermedioIl discorso indiretto

Lunedì: «I'll call you tomorrow». Mercoledì: «He said he would call me the next day».

  • today diventa that day, tomorrow diventa the next day, yesterday diventa the day before e now diventa then
  • here diventa there, this diventa that e these diventa those, come «qui» → «lì» e «questo» → «quello» in italiano

"Monday: "I'll call you tomorrow," he said."
"Reported on Wednesday: He said he would call me the next day."

Come cambiano le parole di tempo

Ecco i cambiamenti principali: today → that day; tomorrow → the next day / the following day; yesterday → the day before / the previous day; now → then; next week → the following week; last week → the week before / the previous week; ago → before.

Le corrispondenze con l'italiano sono quasi perfette: «il giorno dopo» = the next day, «il giorno prima» = the day before, «la settimana seguente» = the following week, «due giorni prima» = two days before. Ma attenzione alla traduzione: «la settimana scorsa» non è «the last week» (che significa «gli ultimi sette giorni»); per riferire quello che qualcuno ha detto, usa the week before. E «due giorni fa» resta two days ago solo se conti da oggi: nel discorso indiretto è two days before. Infine then corrisponde a «allora» nel senso di «in quel momento»; e «in quel momento» si dice at that moment, non in that moment.

""I saw her two days ago." → He said he had seen her two days before."

She said she liked that room». This e these restano solo per quello che è ancora qui e adesso.

""I like this room," she said (in that room). → She said she liked that room."

Esattamente come in italiano.

"Spoken and reported the same day: "I'm busy today," she said. → She said she was busy today."

Esempi di inglese reale

"He said he would see me the following month."
"She said she had moved there the year before."
"He said those were his keys."
"She said she would call the next day."

Attenzione

✗He said he would call me tomorrow. (reported a week later)
✓He said he would call me the next day.

Usa the next day («il giorno dopo»).

✗She said she was busy in that moment.
✓She said she was busy at that moment.

«In quel momento» in inglese è at that moment (oppure then), non in that moment.

✗She said she liked this room. (reported somewhere else)
✓She said she liked that room.

This e here indicano il luogo originale. Se lo riferisci da un altro posto, usa that e there, come «quella» e «lì» in italiano.

✗She said she had arrived the last week.
✓She said she had arrived the week before.

«La settimana scorsa» non si traduce con the: «the last week» significa «gli ultimi sette giorni». Nel discorso indiretto si dice the week before.

✗He said he had seen her two days ago.
✓He said he had seen her two days before.

Non devi imparare l'idea, solo le parole inglesi: the next day, there, two days before.

This = questo, that = quello. Nel discorso indiretto quello che non è più qui né adesso passa a that/those, come in italiano passa a «quello»: «He said those were his keys», se le chiavi non sono più davanti a te quando lo racconti.

In italiano diciamo «la settimana scorsa», «l'anno scorso», con l'articolo

In inglese last week e last year non hanno l'articolo e contano da oggi. «The last week» significa «gli ultimi sette giorni». Per riferire quello che qualcuno ha detto, usa the week before o the previous week: «She said she had arrived the week before.»

💡 «Il giorno dopo» = the next day, «due giorni prima» = two days before, non two days ago.

💡 «La settimana scorsa» nel racconto è the week before, mai the last week.

💡 Stesso giorno e stesso posto? Allora spesso la parola resta uguale.

Situazione reale: riferire un vecchio messaggio

"Did Mia ever call back?"

"Yeah, last week. She said she'd be here the next day, but something came up."

"Did she say when she'd come instead?"

"She just said she'd let us know later that week."
