Relative adverb where, when, dan why

B1 · MenengahKlausa relatif

The city where I was born. The day when we met. The reason why she left. Satu kata sebagai pengganti preposisi + which.

Yang akan kamu pelajari

  • “Where” menggantikan “in/at/on which” setelah kata benda yang menunjukkan tempat, seperti “tempat” dalam “kota tempat saya lahir”
  • “When” menggantikan “in/on/at which” setelah kata benda yang menunjukkan waktu, walaupun dalam bahasa Indonesia sering terdengar “tahun di mana…”
  • “Why” menggantikan “for which” setelah “the reason”: “alasan mengapa” = “the reason why”

Satu kata sebagai pengganti preposisi + which

Where, when, dan why adalah relative adverb (kata keterangan relatif).

Bahasa Indonesia juga punya dua pilihan: “kota yang di dalamnya saya lahir” terdengar berat (mirip in which), sedangkan “kota tempat saya lahir” terdengar biasa (mirip where). Aturan koma mengikuti pelajaran sebelumnya: tanpa koma kalau klausanya menunjukkan tempat mana yang dimaksud; dengan koma kalau klausanya hanya menambah informasi (misalnya setelah nama kota: “Jakarta, where my brother lives, …”).

"The city where I was born has changed a lot."
"The city in which I was born has changed a lot."

Where: untuk tempat

Pakai “where” setelah kata benda yang menunjukkan tempat. Where menggantikan “in which”, “at which”, atau “on which”, dan preposisinya hilang sepenuhnya: “the park where we used to play”, bukan “…where we used to play in”. Sebaliknya, kalau where tidak dipakai, preposisinya harus ada di akhir: “rumah tempat saya dibesarkan” → “the house I grew up in”. “The house I grew up” tanpa where dan tanpa in salah.

"This is the restaurant where we had our first date."
"This is the office where I work."

When: untuk waktu

When menggantikan “in which”, “on which”, atau “at which”.

Seperti “hari kita bertemu” dalam bahasa Indonesia, when juga boleh dihilangkan: “the day we met”.

"I remember the day when we met."
"2020 was the year when everything changed."

Why: untuk alasan

Pakai “why” setelah “the reason”. Why menggantikan “for which” dan terdengar jauh lebih alami. “Alasan mengapa dia pergi” atau “alasan kenapa dia pergi” → “the reason why she left”. Jangan terjemahkan “alasannya karena” atau “alasan dari” kata per kata: “the reason because she left” dan “the reason of she left” salah.

Bentuk “the reason that …” juga sangat umum, begitu pula tanpa kata penghubung sama sekali, persis seperti “alasan dia pergi”: “the reason she left”.

"That's the reason why she left early."
"Do you know the reason why the flight was delayed?"

Contoh bahasa Inggris sehari-hari

"This is the park where we used to play."
"Summer is the season when I feel most productive."
"Nobody knows the reason why he quit."
"That's the house where I grew up."

Perhatikan

✗This is the office when I work.
✓This is the office where I work.

Untuk tempat pakai where, bukan when: when hanya untuk waktu.

✗2020 was the year where everything changed.
✓2020 was the year when everything changed.

Jangan menerjemahkan “tahun di mana…” kata per kata: setelah tahun, hari, musim, atau saat, pakai when; where untuk tempat.

✗This is the town why she was born.
✓This is the town where she was born.

Untuk tempat pakai where: why hanya dipakai setelah “the reason”.

✗That's the reason because she left early.
✓That's the reason why she left early.

“Alasannya karena…” tidak diterjemahkan dengan because. Setelah the reason pakai why, that, atau tanpa kata penghubung: the reason (why) she left.

✗This is the park where we used to play in.
✓This is the park where we used to play.

Where sudah mencakup preposisinya (= in which). Jangan campur dua struktur: “the park where we used to play” atau, lebih formal, “the park in which we used to play”.

✗That's the house I grew up.
✓That's the house where I grew up.

“Rumah tempat saya dibesarkan” tidak punya preposisi, tetapi bahasa Inggris perlu where atau preposisi di akhir: the house where I grew up / the house I grew up in.

Setelah kata benda waktu, kamu perlu when: “2020 was the year when everything changed.”, bukan “the year where”.

Bahasa Inggris perlu where, atau preposisi di akhir klausa: “The city where I was born”, “the restaurant where we had our first date” (atau “the restaurant we had our first date at”). Tanpa keduanya, “the city I was born” dan “the house I grew up” salah. Kalau ragu, pakai where.

“Alasan mengapa dia pergi”, tetapi juga “alasannya karena…” dan “alasan dari…”

“Alasan mengapa” cocok persis dengan “the reason why”: “That's the reason why she left early.” Yang menjadi jebakan adalah “karena” dan “dari”: setelah the reason jangan pakai because atau of. Pilihannya why, that, atau tanpa kata penghubung (“the reason she left”). Dan why hanya dipakai setelah reason; untuk tempat selalu where.

💡 Untuk tempat → where; untuk waktu → when; untuk alasan (setelah the reason) → why.

💡 “Tahun di mana…” dalam bahasa Inggris adalah the year when…, bukan the year where.

💡 “Alasan mengapa…” = the reason why…, bukan the reason because.

💡 Setelah where jangan tambahkan preposisi lagi: the house where I grew up, bukan …grew up in.

Situasi nyata: mengenang masa lalu

"Do you remember the café where we used to study?"

"Of course — that was the year when we were both broke!"

"Ha, true. That's probably the reason why we studied there so much — it was cheap."
